I would second that motion ...but it depends on your definition of stupidity.

In this instance, people who aren't responsible firearms owners.

In Canada we're required to keep all firearms securely locked up, and in the case of handguns, double locked. This way they're out of reach from children, and would be thieves. All too many times I've heard stories of kids getting their hands on a .22 or a handgun and "accidentally" shooting, and even killing someone else, or themselves. I personally know of two instances where this has happened, and it was absolutely completely preventable.

The persons who owned said firearms, was stupid, and shouldn't be allowed to possess them, and after those incidents, likely never will again. Sad thing is, it's too late for two people.

Not everyone should own guns.

gingerb: According to the CDC in 2006, Last up to date numbers,

30,896 total, of which,

642 accidental,
16,883 were Suicide,
12,791 were Homicide,
220 were Undetermined and
360 by Legal intervention.

Remember that in the same year,

43,664 were killed in Motor vehicle accidents,
37,286 died from poisoning,
20,823 died from unintention falls.

In 2005 CDC reported

652,091 people died from heart disease,
559,312 from cancer and
143,579 from stroke.
If looked at in the wider scheme of things, it is just one more way to die, and the figures say it is not even the most popular, or common, way to die................

To my mind though, all of these gun related deaths are definitely preventable deaths, where the others are often not.....

So guns are actually safer than cars and cleaners. Interesting.

velvetUG: The quote went awry zee.

What i said starts with damo in reference 2 damo09's comments. If i can just add, i think it would be of tremendous importance to do a proper 'shooting defence' course mandatory every 12months for all gun owners. Saw a doco on gun owners and how they reacted in a defensive situation and none of them passed it and would've been killed if it were for real

I will totally agree with you. I have taken a handgun course and two advanced course in the past 3 years. I have also had one hand to hand course. I got to the range once a week and put 100 rounds down range which comes to about 7000 rounds a real including the courses. For me to pull my handgun out takes a lot of pushing on the part of the perp.

In response to: I ask that everyone only post their views on the subject, and remember to respect each other. I'm pro-firearms,I don't own them for hunting and target shooting alone,I own them for defense of my life,my rights, and my country. Anyone else a gun owner?

I'm the owner of Tauras Pt-111 Millennium Pro 9mm w/2 mags and 12 rounds each.I only use it for target shooting but I wouldn't be afraid to use it to defend myself if the need to arose.
