But if I had to choose between the two, there is no doubt I'd choose absolutely no education, but a kind heart, and caring personality and buckets of common sense!
Social snobbery: one example could be thinking someone is unworthy of respect and going on to feel that it is jolly fine to have a go at them behind the annonimity of a computer screen.
I fail to get this need for some to take their pleasure scoffing at others, whether justified or not, and then cover their asses by saying it was all done in fun.
Just dont get it, and I think those who do it are quite pathetic. Of course, I only mean that "in fun", so mean no offence.
Good God. How welcoming, trusting and friendly we all are.
Whether or not the OP posted the phrase "quality white" on purpose or by mistake, what the heck does it matter. Where is this "dont post unless you have something nice to say" code that we all (supposedly) adhere to? Its absent, because the code does not exist, or only exists when it suits posters.
Looks like this OP is the Chosen One for the regular "Lets Pick on a Poster for Something Silly, Because I am Bored" thread.
Thats what Im talking about; A-Levels when I was at school were considered "prestigious". Now, not so much it seems.
I have discussed the educational system here in the US, and its been interesting to learn about. For instance, here in NY State, they have what they call "Regis" High School Diplomas, which are of a higher academic level than none Regis. So, the level of the same qualification varies from State to State, apparently, which I find very odd.
This is pretty much exactly what I was thinking about; a formal education, or lack of it does not necessarily maketh the man.
The old adage about "Lots of intelligence; no common sense" still stands tall.
The thing about degrees also is this: these days you can pretty much get a degree from anywhere - the internet, the University of the Sainted Gordon Ramsey, the College of Crochet..
When I was a lass, a degree meant something like English/Literature, History, a language or Maths, or similar. These days you can get a degree in whats on TV that evening, if you look hard enough.
I wasnt referring to you in any way, my friend.More, another thread that was going on recently regarding a mistake a poster made in the OP and got slaughtered for it.
My guy lost both his parents by the time he was 16. He worked nights in a bakery to get through finishing school.
He overcame all the odds to become a fine tradesman and worked all over the country when he was younger. Now, he started his own small waste collection business and its doing great. No, its not glamorous, but its lucrative and RECESSION PROOF!
I am so proud of him that he overcame a difficult upbringing, some nasty relationships and still managed to make a success of things and run his own business.
I agree with your post to a degree (no pun intended), but many of the vocational courses MD are offering go right up to management levels, so I can only see it as being a good thing.
I totally agree, C. And thats really the whole point of the thread. People have stated, on this forum and in life, that they consider people who have a lesser education not worthy. Also the thread is a comment on the subject of snobs: snobs would not be snobs unless they had formulated an opinion of another's level on the ladder, judged them and then sentenced them to being of a lower social standard than them.
I do not think this way, do not agree with thinking that way, but the fact remains there are people in this world who do, think its acceptable and make no secret of it.
I know many people who had plenty of motivation to go to school. However, some simply could not, due to other restraints.
I totally understand what you are saying, and there are plenty around I am sure who are simply too damn lazy. There are also those who have worked very hard to build successful businesses who dont have a extensive On-Paper education.
I think it is hard to judge anyone without really knowing them.
As regards educational snobbery, well, that is something that I dislike. Many people in the world, and a few I know, have high IQs, are extremely intelligent but due to life events were not able to go to get a degree or decided that they had higher priorities, like looking after kids.
Does that make them lesser educational beings, because they dont have a piece of paper? Of course not.
Social Snobbery
Really. Wow. I never knew that.
