These days, in times of high unemployment however, you get what you can to make a buck. As I said, I have worked in law for many years, but there is just nothing about so I think myself lucky to have a job at all. These days, doctors, lawyers and all kinds of professionals are found working in jobs that they would not necessarily normally do in better times, but so what? We all do what we can...
It has opened my eyes though, to the amount of job snobs that abound, even in these days of so-called equality..
Yes, it does, fortunately. I have met many friendly, nice people since working there, from many different countries. 90% of them are great; just a few nasties which unfortutunately are the ones that stick in your mind!
I am finding it a very interesting experiment in human nature..
Yes, there is no doubt that there are some service staff who are obviously very resentful about their position, and show it. They are untrained, impatient and really quite rude also. In those cases, I can understand a less-than-perfect response.
In my own personal experience recently, I have discovered that the people who try and get things "on the cheap", come to a MOTEL rather than a HOTEL because they think its better value still expect to be waited on hand and foot. When I work, I go out of my way to help and do all I can. In the case of the French Canadian couples that came in recently, I actually took time to Google another hotel and write the number down for the lady, although she was very rude and arrogant. I didnt HAVE to do that. She proceeded to grab my office phone, and ring the number even though she had a cell phone in her hand. Then, to top it all, had the AUDACITY to snap at me that I had given her the wrong number -which I hadnt; she had dialled it wrong. They then sniffed, and marched out, without a Thank You, Kiss My Butt, nothing.
That has to be one of the most rudest incidents I have ever witnessed, and I found it hard to comprehend how anyone could be that rude.
Thats the way it should be. But sometimes, when dealing with service staff it appears grown adults forget that. They seem to use it as some kind of Power Play; they know the person is there to work and use that opportunity to be rude and arrogant because they know they CAN.
Guess that means they are somewhat lacking in confidence themselves, because bullies generally are.
However, in a service role you cant just walk away; its part of the job to deal with people - rude, polite, and treat them the same. Its very hard though, and I find it unbelievable that anyone who knows they can "get away" with less than unacceptable to others simply because they know they can.
I have never been rude to any service staff, even if I thought them completely incompetent and stupid. I know that I get more out of others with honey than with vinegar.
There is no doubt that some people in service roles are not trained correctly, or are simply not suited to that role.
I have always said as regards Managers, people are not always automatically good managers. People Management is a skill, and some either just dont have it, or need sound training before being let loose on the Unsuspecting Public..
I do realise that many hotels these days employ cheap labor, kids who have no experience and no customer service skills. However, it is clear to look at me that I am not a kid! And therefore I find it outrageous that, simply because of the role I am in at present, people treat me differently to when I worked in a law office.
Do we really judge others on their occupations? Seems some do..
Recently, I started a job up the road as a Hotel Front Desk Receptionist, working evenings in order to get some extra money in to pay for some forthcoming large expenses.
I have found the way people treat me in this service role varies immensely. Some, actually most, treat me with courtesy and mutual respect. There is a small minority, however, that seem to be of the opinion that anyone in a service role is of a lower social rank to them and that gives them the right to treat them condescendingly and rudely.
I am an intelligent, well-travelled and well educated lady who has worked in law and office management for many years. However, since taking this position for a while I have found that some guests will treat you appallingly.
What they forget is that although they are paying guests, service staff "service" them; deal with their problems, help them out etc. If they treat me like crap, they will not get the best from me either!
I believe that everyone should be treated with respect, irrespective of job. I have found this period to be a further eye-opener into human nature and how rude we can be when we think we can get away with it.
No-one every tried doing that with me, because they know what my answer would be..
However, I know that it has been attempted toward moi, and I found it hard to believe that any adult would get involved in this type of behaviour. Apparently, they do!
RE: Will they recover?
Oh, I dont know anymore..
