RE: Hotrods: One Hit Wonders, Unique and Forgotten Songs, Chat, Silly Pics, and whatever else

In1959 I worked for a Rambler dealer in Jamaica Queens which was once a Hudson dealer before Hudson went out of business. We still had a lot of customer with Hudsons. I worked on a lot of them. Valve jobs, Clutches etc. The Hornet was a nice little car, Flat head 6 Cyl. The bigger Hudsons were a little harder to work on. To do a clutch job you have to pull the transmission of course but the Hudson had a torque tube drive meaning the driveshaft was encased on a tube, so the only way to drop the driveshaft was to unhook it from the gearbox and using a "Comealong" between the Differential and the 2 bumperettes on the rear bumper and pull the rear end toward the rear of the car till the front of the driveshaft dropped out of the trans. The car had coil springs in the rear which was the only reason it was possible to pull the rear end back. Probably the number of Hudson Mechanics left alive you can count of 1 hand. Hell, I may be the only one left. laugh

Cranberry Sauce

A few years ago I was invited to a friends Thanksgiving dinner with her whole family. There must have been about 15 people around the table. I didn't want to go empty handed so I made a big batch of Cranberry Sauce thinking everybody was gonna love it. Would you believe not one single person even tried it? I was dumbfounded. Where the hell am I? I thought. I never did that again.

Cranberry Sauce

Or Cranberry Relish.
I bought a bag of Cranberry's around Xmas time to make my families Cranberry Relish recipe. It was a tradition in my family for the Holiday dinners. After I made the Cranberry Sauce I decided to look on the bag to see if there was a recipe there. OMG there was, and it blew me away. The recipe calls for
1 Cup of water
1 Cup of Sugar
3 Cups of Cranberries
They to bring the whole mess to a boil for 10 Min. Let it cool and pop it in the fridge. I'd never heard of boiling Cranberries, and a cup of Sugar???? Geeze no wonder people get diabetes and fat as a house.

This is how I make Cranberry Sauce;
Grind up a bag of Cranberries and 1 orange (no peels or pits TY) in a hand cranked meat grinder. Stir in about 1/4 cup of sugar. Chill & serve.

RE: US- Iran

What I meant was any legal means necessary such as Impeachment, investigating his crooked business deals, a look at his tax returns would probably reveal a lot of actions the SEC would find very interesting possibly Insider Trading. That's what brought down Martha Stewart. I think the thing that will ultimately land him in big serious legal jeopardy is going to be his action of putting a tariff on Washing Machines. There's a story there I can feel it in my bones. The easiest thing will be to just vote him out of office.

RE: Hotrods: One Hit Wonders, Unique and Forgotten Songs, Chat, Silly Pics, and whatever else

I'm glad you liked my pick Hotrod, here's another one I think you'll love.

I kissed your lips
Your burning lips
and I found a treasure of gold

I realized, from the look in your eyes
I'd found a wealth untold

You smiled at me
and I could see
the love light burning so bright

Forevermore I will adore
you every day and night

please, please, never go
you know what you mean to me
stay here, by my side
don't ever set me free

If I should lose
your love
Life would be sorrow and pain
Stay with me here
cover my fear
Don't let my tears fall like rain
Don't let my tears fall like rain

Fall like rain

RE: ???????????THIS IS A DATING SITE????????????

The topic of the thread asks a question. I answered the question based on my observations and gave a long list of examples. I guess my sarcasm was a little elusive. dunno

RE: ???????????THIS IS A DATING SITE????????????

???????????THIS IS A DATING SITE????????????

NO, it's a Word Game site. Observe;

CHANGE ANY TWO WORDS"
In Four Words
First letter, last letter
Last to post wins
First to post wins
Word association game
Alpha Names Alphabetical
Anyplace in America A-Z
Anyplace in Europe - A-Z
Last two letters start the next word
One word split in the middle
2 words backwards
And the most ridiculous one of all;
the 3,685,908,507th post wins
I added the coma's to make the number more readable.
it's approx 3.6 Billion
.

This site already has a game forum so I don't understand why anyone finds it necessary to create a game thread or game blog.confused
I have engaged in a few game threads when I found them interesting and challenging but only a few.

RE: Hotrods: One Hit Wonders, Unique and Forgotten Songs, Chat, Silly Pics, and whatever else

From the bygone days of innocence. This was a chart buster in NYC.

RE: everything anyone has is given to them.

The word I'm having difficulty with is HAS. Everything I have was not given to me. I was given life when I was born, food and nurturing as I grew, education etc. What I got from the sweat off my brow, the ache of my muscles, the time I spent, the skills I brought to bear for others, earned me what I have today.
While it's true I was given a head start in life, a grub stake so to speak, what I did with it was up to me. I could have squandered it like some people do but I chose not to.

RE: Memorable quotes and their Authors

"There is no greater bore than perfection."

The Most Dangerous Game
Short story by Richard Connell

Guys, has a man of the cloth ever gotten a bit too "friendly" with you?

When I was in Jr HS, My mother decided that I needed to go for "Religious Instruction" to prepare me to receive "Confirmation" ie become a "Soldier of god". I got a pass to leave school an hour early and go to a nearby church 2 times a week for a few months. It was cool getting out of school but the time at church was even more boring than school what with having to memorize a bunch of useless scripture.

Anyway, one day as the class was letting out the priest gestured for me to stay behind, he wanted to have a word with me. After the last kid left the room the priest walked around to the front of his desk and sat down on top of the desk facing the classroom. He motioned for me to come closer and when I was standing in front of him, he wrapped his legs around me. I was absolutely shocked and I'm sure it must have shown on my face because my eyeballs almost popped out. With both hands I pushed myself away from him and made my way out of the room. That was the last time I ever attended his class. I never told my mother what happened because she probably wouldn't have believed me anyway.

There were stories told among the kids about how some of them were taken down to the basement of the church by this priest and made to stand with their arms outstretched like a cross til they couldn't hold them up, if they sagged down they would have to perform some kind of penance but nobody was willing to say what that was.

RE: Hotrods: One Hit Wonders, Unique and Forgotten Songs, Chat, Silly Pics, and whatever else

This was a very big hit when I was a teen. What I love about this song is how the sad lyrics are in such contrast to the upbeat music especially the drum line. It's hard not to tap your feet to this number. There's a line in the song where the girl is saying to the guy she's dumping about the new guy "He's tall, dark and you know how it is."
My first thought was "How the hell is he supposed to know how it is?" laugh

RE: Honey

I switched from cane sugar to raw honey about 20 years ago. Believe it or not I buy honey by the 5 gallon pail about every 2-3 years. It's way cheaper that way.

I just got the latest Family Dollar store circular

It contains a special price drop for 2 bottles of Pepsi Cola or Mtn Dew 20 OZ bottles for $3.50. Limit 4 bottles. That comes to $1.75 per 20 OZ bottle. Normally I buy Sams Club soda at Walmart for $0.62 for a 2L bottle. I have several empty 20 OZ bottles and I can fill 3.8 bottles from 1, 2L bottle. I did a little math and that works out to a savings of $1.57 per 20 OZ bottle of soda. Looking at it from another viewpoint that's about 18 cents per bottle instead of $1.75.
I never lived through the Depression but my mother did and I'm sure a lot of her frugality has rubbed off on me. Of course I learned on my own to survive under extreme poverty as a child. Finding and eating food from other peoples garbage wasn't uncommon for me and many of the kids I hung around with who were also always hungry. We were all garbage pickers and if we found a sandwich in the garbage we would break it in half and share it. We learned other ways to find something to eat as well. There was a Horn & Hardart Automat around the block from my house on 86th st.

They always had glasses with ice and a lemon wedge if anybody wanted iced Tea to go with their food. They also had 2 complimentary slices of bread if you were buying a bowl of soup or something. We would take the glass of ice to the water cooler & fill it and squeeze the lemon wedge into it. they had sugar bowls on all the tables and we would make our own lemonade. For something solid we would take the bread and using the free condiments also available, we would make a mustard and ketchup sandwich. I don't know if the managers ever saw us doing this but if they did they probably looked the other way knowing it may be the only thing we had to eat that day.
These days I wonder if my mother was aware of what I was doing to not starve, would she decide to stop drinking. I kinda doubt it. sigh

RE: Do You Have A Favorite Christmas Movie

Such is the risk of creating a multiple choice poll, very often the most worthy or obvious choice is omitted. In this case;
"One Magic Christmas" is missing from the list. Cast includes;
Mary Steenburgen, Harry Dean Stanton, and 6 year old Elizabeth Harnois.

RE: The Do You Remember Thread

I have very few memories of Christmas from the past. I do remember when I was about 10 my father came to visit and brought my older brother a 2 wheeler and I got a red wagon. I wasn't happy about that. I also remember my sister spending hours of drudgery decorating a Pine tree in the living room with tinsel and colored glass balls. My thoughts at the time was... What a waste of time and energy.

RE: Do You Have A Favorite Christmas Movie

I have 2 copies of that movie. I also have a little Snowman doll that I found at a yard sale. I don't think they knew what it was.
I understand every frame of that movie was hand drawn.

IMO the 2 best albums ever made were ELO's New World Record and Bob Dylan's Free Wheelin.

RE: Watch out for 'stolen' pictures

A short time ago some stupid scammer actually used a picture of Marilyn Monroe. doh

RE: Family Dollar......Dollar General......Dollar Tree Stores

I just went shopping at ALDI today. Normally I shop at Walmart, Dollar Tree, or Roses all of which are only about 3 miles from my house. ALDI is 18 miles using back roads which I enjoy. It's about the same distance using the highways but not nearly as much fun although taking the highway is faster. My ALDI shares a Strip Mall with Harbor Freight and Tractor Supply so I can hit all 3 stores on the same trip. Today I stopped into Harbor Freight and bought a 10 tooth blade for my bandsaw cause I only had 1 and if it broke I would be screwed.
Several years ago I created a master shopping list for Walmart with aisle locations and prices. I also have prices for ALDI, Roses and Foodlion in separate columns. This way I know where to buy what. Today I bought;
1 Gallon of Milk $2.72 at ALDI at WMT $2.95
1 Doz Lg Eggs $.82 at ALDI at WMT $2.58
I bought 2 boxes of Raspberry fruit & grain bars and a bunch of bananas.
I'm gonna have to recheck these Egg prices because the difference is just too great.
There is another discount store down by Richmond Airport 27 miles distant which I love called N&W Salvage that sells just about anything you can think of but their "best by date" food items are pretty much out of date. Expiration dates are pretty much a scam in my opinion anyway.

RE: Cover versions of classic songs..

RE: Cover versions of classic songs..

And very often it's not.
Everybody is familiar with the Diamonds version of "Little Darlin" but most people have never heard the original done by Maurice Williams when he was with a group called the "Gladiolas". This version went nowhere because the Diamonds, more "polished" rendition, totally stole the spotlight from the "Gladiolas". IMO however, I think this raw original recording is really the better one.

RE: Cover versions of classic songs..

I never get tired of watching and listening to this little angel.

RE: Raking leaves

So, Mr Cranky, What do you do with all these leaves? When I lived in NJ I brought my leaves to the local dump and they turned the huge pile into compost for the people to take for their gardens in the Springtime. It was a wonderful way of turning a disposal problem into a value added product and it was all free.

RE: Raking leaves

I rake my leaves into paper bags which I bring in the house and burn them by the handful in my little wood stove when I need to give the fire a little boost.

Here's a story by O-Henry that might bring tears to your eyes.

Trump may get his wish after all

It's also the job of Senate Majority Leader (the "Turtle" Mitch McConnell) Republican from Kentucky, to bring the matter to a vote. "Merrick Garland was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama in March 2016. The Senate never voted on his nomination." Why? Because McConnell refused to bring it to the floor for a vote!
