RE: Dear Western Europe

No, I think they would just like to have a country that makes its own laws and controls its own borders.

And what fair-minded person could disagree with that?

RE: Dear Western Europe

It seems you are not as dumb as I thought, Mr. T.

Taking out the nonsense terms like "Facists" (sic) you have pretty much summed up my attitude. Yes, the Eastern Europeans are electing people like Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orban, who actually care about Western values. In contrast to the Merkels of this world who want to destroy Western values.

RE: Dear Western Europe

Ah, another exponent of White Guilt, huh Mollz?

The fact that so many Black-ruled countries are corrupt, non-functioning basket cases is clear and present evidence of the failings of the........ White man?

Perhaps the lovely Mr. Mugabe, for example, who inherited a functioning and successful country from them evil White folks, then proceeded to destroy it, would agree with you. He liked to blame the White man too.

RE: Dear Western Europe

Political sni**ering aside, I think we are all agreed that Ireland is part of Europe.

RE: Clothes

Did you mean couldn't care less?

RE: Dear Western Europe

If you are thinking of the Congo, I think you will find the indigenous folks of the Congo have been a lot more brutal since the Belgians left, than the Belgians ever were.....

Same is true all over Africa.......

RE: Answer a question with a question

Dang, don't ya hate it when folks make a valid point?

RE: One Word Only

RE: Dear Western Europe

Earlier you called the Baltic states "Eastern Europe" which surprised me greatly, lol.

I think we'd be more likely to agree with the above list, although interestingly, Pope John Paul II, who of course was from Poland, address in one of his books the issue of whether Poland is in Eastern Europe, and his answer was "no" - he referred to the fact that the geographic centre of Europe is in Poland (yes, he's right) so Poland is neither Western nor Eastern but Central.

That said, in common parlance, I think most of us would call Poland an Eastern European country, in teh same way that we may talk about Virginia as part of "the South" in US terms, as it was part of teh Confederacy, but clearly not geographically in the southern half of the USA.

RE: Answer a question with a question

All the time, innit?

RE: America's PC Vocabulary

"Dreamer" is a great word. I am a dreamer.

Or rather, it was a great word, before it was hijacked and used to refer to criminals who deliberately choose to illegally break into other peoples' countries because they've mad a mess of their own.

Sadly, like rainbows, unicorns, and the word "gay" it now has unpleasant connotations far removed from its original delight.

RE: Answer a question with a question

If I am right, we don't have any coconuts, do we?

RE: Clothes

QUOTE: Do one's clothes say anything about the wearer?

I am firm believer in the maxim: Clothes Maketh The Man.

You are what you wear. You dress like a slob, you are a slob.

RE: In Four Words

Be A Good Person

RE: Dear Western Europe

Economically better off, after many years of communism. Yes, perhaps.

But Eastern Europe is culturally and spiritually richer than Western Europe, and if Europe is to survive, then Western Europe needs to look East for a lead.

RE: Still paying for the Pope

From what I can see from the information available, it was indeed a call for donations. The cause being the visit of the Pope to Ireland. If you do not want to give the Pope money to visit Ireland, then don't.

Or was this thread just another excuse to bash organized religion? lol

RE: Great Britain Eire, border.

As an aside, I suppose someone needs to say this.

There is no border between "Great Britain" and "Eire" as referred to in the thread title.

Great Britain is a term that refers to the landmass of England, Scotland, and Wales, and as such it does not include Northern Ireland and therefore does not border the Irish Republic.

A more appropriate term would be UK / Eire border, as Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but not part of Great Britain.

Cheers.

RE: Sounds That Make You Cringe

No need to apologize.

RE: Sounds That Make You Cringe

It's the moment when the teeth bite into the apple. Ugggggggh. It's like a whole classroom of kids scratching their nails down the board.........

It makes me shiver just thinking about it.

RE: Sounds That Make You Cringe

Yes.

RE: Jim acosta - guilty or not guilty of putting his hands on a woman

Absolutely! He had more than his fair share of the President's time, but wanted to make himself the news story so he kept going and going. In that, he succeeded.

RE: can you be a muslim and british?

You need to define if you mean ethnically British or civilly British, for a start.

In either event, the answer is: yes. Someone who is civilly British (i.e. a British passport holder) may well be a Muslim. Many are.

And someone who is ethnically British can convert to Islam. George Galloway comes to mind.

However, we need to keep in mind that the vast majority of Muslims in the UK are NOT ethnically British.

RE: Sounds That Make You Cringe

People eating apples.

It affects me so much I need to leave the room.

RE: The Death Penalty

People who take the lives on innocent people should have their own life taken in return.

Nothing else is justice.

RE: Eating out alone.

Not in the slightest bit uncomfortable, thanks for asking.

Seriously, is anyone really so insecure that they would be uncomfortable about eating alone?

RE: Jim acosta - guilty or not guilty of putting his hands on a woman

Thanks for keeping this thread from descending into name-calling. :)

RE: Dear Western Europe

Eastern Europe is frankly the last real hope for Western Civilization.

RE: Still paying for the Pope

Um, OP, if you think something is a good cause, donate to it.

If you do not think it is a good cause, do not donate to it.

There are plenty of collections that I don't donate to, but I don't see the need to start a thread about it......?

RE: Jim acosta - guilty or not guilty of putting his hands on a woman

Come, come, my friend, your naivety is showing.

If you think that the reporter did not engineer this whole thing to get the reaction he did, then you are more gullible than you look.

And, for the record, Mr. Mandela was sent to prison, not for being a narcissist, but for plotting a terrorist attack, which is something quite different.
