RE: Pretentiousness - Is it a crime?

I love this quote from Nick Rhodes, the keyboard player with Duran Duran, when he was was once accused of being pretentious:

"Pretentious??? I should jolly well hope so!".

I feel the same way!

RE: Green Deal

Conrad, your graphic of the cavemen looks a bit off to me as a "liberal vision of the future". Waaaaay too much "toxic masculinity" on display there.

RE: Do you pick up hitch hikers?

Neither!

I neither pick up hitch-hikers, nor am I "scared to death of them".

But as a former taxi driver, who used to earn a living from picking up people on the side of the road, I fail to see why I should now do so for free. I feel the same way as a hairdresser might feel if she saw someone standing by the side of the road with a sign reading "free haircut please".

RE: White-knighting

As the Spaniard might say, "it's my cross, but I'm Iberian it...."

RE: Supreme Justice: Ruth Bader Ginsberg

If this was an attempt to disprove my quote about Lyndon Johnson saying "I'll have them N**gers voting Democrat for the next two hundred years" then it failed badly, didn't it?

You will note that Snopes rates the quote as "unproven". But NOT as "false". In other words, they are unable to disprove that he said it, and unable to label it a lie or an urban myth. Coming from a far-left site like Snopes, this is pretty much an admission it is genuine.

Johnson was not stupid enough to put such a remark in print or in a formal speech; it was an aside to his colleagues at the time. As such, "unproven" is probably the right call.

What I find especially note-worthy is that, in the 50 years since he made this comment, not one of his friends or family members has ever denied the quote was his. In other words, even if his friends and family don't know for sure he said it, they can at least believe it is something he might well have said. And frankly, that tells us all we need to know about Lyndon Johnson!

RE: Liberal Teachers

Well put. An excellent graphic that contains a valid (and frankly, unanswerable) point!

RE: Did you enjoy American President Trump's 2019 State of the Union?

A graduate of the Neocon School Of Global Politics, I see.

RE: White-knighting

Lol, it's not your job to explain it, buddy, it is up to the OP. If he wants people to respond, he needs to let us in on what the heck he is talking about.

RE: I have heard that in Denmark.

My mother does the toilet paper that way. And she's not Danish.

I agree that it makes no sense.

RE: Which passed away musician do you miss most?

The Spice Girls are still alive.

That's botox, ducky, not embalming fluid........

RE: Can anyone explain why Bush senior and junior never where sent to Haag tribunal for war crimes.

The same reason that Winston Churchill and Harry Truman never were.....

People who win wars (no matter what means they used, to do so) are never held accountable for atrocities they commit.

Been this way since the beginning of human history.

RE: Country most featured?

Try again, in English?

RE: Heaven is waiting

Your comment encapsulates in a nutshell the biggest problem with the modern West.

RE: Heaven is waiting

Well said, and God bless you also.

RE: White-knighting

Before anyone can answer, you need to explain for us English-speakers, what "white-kinighting" means......

RE: Did you enjoy American President Trump's 2019 State of the Union?

So should non-Americans.

He has lessened the chance of a war with North Korea, he has lessened the chance of WW3 with Russia, and he has provided inspiration and a morale boost to nationalists worldwide.

RE: UK and Brexit

Brexit will never happen - the politicians won't allow the will of the people to be translated into any meaningful action.

RE: Did you enjoy American President Trump's 2019 State of the Union?

American politics "contrived and pretentious"?????!!!!

Who'd have thunk it?

RE: Supreme Justice: Ruth Bader Ginsberg

This would be the same Lyndon Johnson who has been quoted as saying privately to colleagues about the Civil Rights legislation "I'll have them N**gers voting Democrat for the next tow hundred years"......?

Yup, Democratic Party sure loves dem Black folks.....

RE: There goes my date!

Further to my previous comment, I suspect "stormed out" is a melodramatic way of saying he decided to leave. And given that you were not interested in him (which was probably mutual, if the date was "awkward"), it was probably for the best.

A lot of people are quite different when you meet them in person - this is normal.

RE: Did both you boilogocalparents bring you up together

My childhood was one long and bitter custody battle.

The only winners were the lawyers.

RE: How George got his revenge................. lol

That is actually quite a funny joke. Well done!

RE: When do your observations of people become fact?

If you are looking for an arbitrary point in time, such as "one week to the day after first meeting them" then you are totally out of luck.

Life ain't like that.

RE: There goes my date!

Bad dates happen. That's life.

In fairness, however, it does sound as though your response to his question was un-necessarily rude and insulting (albeit that it was not intentional on your part). I'd probably have got up and walked out too.

RE: Did you enjoy American President Trump's 2019 State of the Union?

I'm a Trump supporter, but must admit I have only seen brief clips and not watched the whole thing yet.

I did notice Pelosi, and how sour she looked, although (and you might shoot me for saying this) I thought she actually looked more physically attractive than usual. Younger, somehow. See, there is a place for makeup! laugh

RE: Anyone wanna chat about brexit? (btw im serious this isnt a joke)

All you need to know about Brexit is this:

It was a scam concocted by the British government to get a a pro-EU result to stay in, and thus silence (or at least strongly undermine) Euroskeptics in the governing party, as well as anti-EU parties such as UKIP and the BNP.

Cameron's plan backfired, leaving the government with egg all over its face, and leaving Cameron's replacement scrambling (eggs, scrambling, see what I did there?) to delay, stall, obfuscate, and generally thwart the will of the people.

Brexit will never happen. The people may want it, but in the UK, as in all Western "democracies", the will of the people is just something to be moulded by the political class, so they (the political class) get the result they want, irrespective of the peoples' wishes.

So far, the Prime Minister has been extremely successful at holding Brexit at bay.

RE: take a chance.

A gentleman after midnight, perhaps?

RE: Yellow vest bank run.

Not in my house, they're not.

The French are a great people, with a great culture, great language, great sense of humour, and balls.

RE: Did you enjoy American President Trump's 2019 State of the Union?

???!!!!!!!!!!

While I applaud you for watching something educational and related to current events, your assertion that "there was nothing else to watch or do on the computer" is certainly one that makes one sit bolt upright and say "whaaaaaaaaaaaaat??!!".

RE: Which passed away musician do you miss most?

Gary Moore was my favourite guitar player.
