Teenage Pregnancies

In the old South-Africa the age of consent was 18. Our ANC government scrapped this law because such a law did not sit well with African customs and traditions. We have no age of consent now. The result is that we are plagued with uncontrolled teenage pregnancy. doh

The other day an 11 year old girl disappeared from her parents’ house in a nearby township. They found her three days later in the house of a 24 year old man. The parents beat up the young man and took him to the police station where he was released straight away because he did not break any laws. frustrated

That was when I arrived there. The women of the neighborhood – most of them mothers of teenage daughters – were in uproar. I ask them what happened and after they told me, one commented that the girl’s father should go to jail because the young man did not force her into his home. The girl was standing around there freely admitting that she went to him out of her own volition. shock

When I responded that an 11 year old girl belongs in her classroom - not in a grown-up’s bedroom, the girl said that age is just a number and another woman laughed and said that is a normal starting age. uh oh

But there is something else at work here. Teenage pregnancies come as good news to a family because the grandmother will take the child and get a grant from the state for looking after it. Babies are often made only to increase the income. mumbling

Statistics South Africa announced that 97,143 teenage mothers gave birth in 2018 and - listen to this: 3,261 children aged between 10 and 14 became mothers in 2018. But these alarming figures are not the only problem. The big sadness is that these girls leave school and only a small percentage of them return to finish their education. sigh

Then I read a blog about somebody going to jail for 20 years for having sex with a minor and I shake my head because here in South-Africa almost a hundred thousand men should have gone to jail last year. very mad

What A Place! What A Joy!

At last I found the place where I’m going to retire. At least the people there know what they’re doing and what they still plan to do. I hope that I will still be able to make a positive contribution to the town’s activities when the time comes.

Peace in our time?

Will we ever have an enduring peace on the blogs? Ever since I can remember there had always been some tussling going on somewhere. If they were fighting about girlfriends and boyfriends I could understand; this is a dating site but they’re fighting about politics, religion and every thing else. I have not been on other dating sites and I wonder if it goes the same there. I wonder if there are so many rude people elsewhere; or is it endemic to The Internet? A friend told me the other day that there are so many bloggers that he avoids for some reason or another and if it continues at this trend he’d soon run out of blogs to comment on.

Hijackers!

I initially typed quite a nice blog detailing my thoughts on this subject, but then thought, “bugger it, better get straight to the point”.

Will all you hijackers hijack that have invaded the blogs please go back (piss off) to the forums that you all ruined with your incessant off topic blabber. spam

Or at least dont post on my blogs. grin

Asking The Right Questions

Some people have the talent to ask all the wrong questions and I have a habit of answering a question straight as it was asked.shock

My one window is about one meter from the neighbor’s fence and a few months ago he hollered across the fence asking me if I know the time. I said I don’t know what the time is. I heard him mumbling some abuse as he walked back into his home. The next day he would not greet me.snooty

On the third day I tackled the bull by the horns and walked around to him, asking him what’s his beef with me. He said I refused to tell him the time.doh

“I did no such thing”, I said. “I answered your question very truthfully. I did not know the time. I suppose I could have looked on my watch, but that was not what you asked for.”innocent

Then he saw the light. “Man, you knew what I meant”, he retorted.scold

“No”, I said. “I did not know what you meant. You asked the wrong question and now you are upset with me because I answered it correctly. Had you asked for the time, I would certainly have told you.”grin

He looked at me with a half-grin and said: “Man, you just want to talk shit again. Come inside, my beer is getting warm.” We sat there with a beer each and laughed about the incident.cheers

But that is the way I am. I ask questions direct and to the point. Badly worded questions like “Do you know the time?”, May I ask your name?”, “What’s the time in there?” and the likes of it, will always get a shitty reply from me.tongue

Only my mother could get away with ‘Do you know the time?’ It was not a question; it was a statement and it was always met with the same response. I would say “Yes mom” and head straight for bed. She did not tolerate my BS and even then I knew what was good for me.laugh

American way of life.....

The American way of life is to buy whatever you want whenever you want it... laugh

what they wanted was something different then
they decide for
what the person next to them had.laugh

American govt...
last 40 years have been catering to the rich.

There laws being made that will make those in power feel good..

The American way of life is amazing - on paper. But in truth, the American way of Life seems set up to favor certain people and make life much harder for others. sigh

more to come... in the

What Do People Remember Best?

I wonder what part of a conversation is remembered best. Do people remember how you begin a conversation or how you end it? Or does it not work like that? Perhaps they remember the good part better than the bad part. Or is it the other way around?confused

Let’s assume that you need to reprimand somebody for some minor offense. Maybe it is your child, a student, or a junior at work. Do you first pay him a compliment to get him in a better receptive mood and then chew his balls? Or do you first cut him down to size and then pay him a compliment to insure that the meeting ends on a positive note? Of course, this is providing that the person took in what you said. Some people don’t listen to what you say.uh oh

And what if you cannot think of something good to say? It is easy to find a stick if you want to beat a dog but to find a brush for his coat is somewhat harder. I suppose one could make fun of it. I mean, if the person is sulking after you told him that he’s not using his head, you can always comfort him with a corny crack like telling him that for a dumb a**, he’s not really that dumb at all. It should cheer him up a bit.grin

I suppose one could argue that it may be best to start with something positive, do the unpleasant part, and then to pay another compliment but then the purpose of the meeting may be buried so deep between all the lip service that it may be missed altogether.dunno

I notice this phenomenon on the blogs as well. A large proportion of the comments deal only with the heading (often misconstrued), the first paragraph, or the last paragraph, while the body of the blog, that contains the juicy morsels, often gets very little or no attention.doh
