Last Smile

A repressed memory makes itself known
I had buried it deep within because in pain it did grow
Nurtured by misery and strengthened with my tears
Of the loss of the one that I loved dear
My mended heart is starting to unravel
It's like being hit in the face with a fist full of gravel
Like a sickness in my stomach that tears my soul
Ripping apart everything I had left to hold
I should have been there when you needed me most
But now I'm haunted by your restless ghost
That night you left with a smile on your face
But quickly that memory would be replaced
I heard the sirens, then the screams of our friends
I did not know that this night your life would come to an end
What if I had done this, what if I had done that
So many times I've asked this but there's no going back
It should've been me, I wish I could take your place
Instead of having to remember that last smile upon your face

Tears in a Smile

She gave me a smile filled with tears
She asked I kept it a secret for her
I hoped I could soothe her despairs
So I questioned her a little farther
In the voice of a child she spoke
The smile filled with tears kept her centred
She said, "This morning I woke.
From the sleep that for years I had entered."

"I closed my eyes twelve years ago, you see
Wide awake without even a dream of my own
I sent my dreams downstream in a canope
Just to be used and left all alone."
She sighed the sighed of lost hope
Patted my hand that held her smile filled with tears
And whispered, "My child I just can't cope
Too much hatred, dashed dreams and fears."

As she walked away I was left with a smile
No longer filled with tears but lost
I thought she was not even hostile
And I wanted to help at all cost
So off I went to find her once more
I walked to the corner where she had turned
I followed my aim to reassure
But I was forbidden with a smile that burned.

The Vista of Death

The vista of death hovers ever near
the woman's face awash with tears
as his last words she leans over to hear
the pain of his passing through her sears

Lost in her pain nothing else registers
life slowly passes on by as she grieves
emotions in deep freeze nothing stirs
from this there will not be any reprieves

This pass should never have been
a child never should be laid first
she shivers, moans touching skin
as into the coffin he goes feet first

The bullet has ended a young soul
so senseless and wasteful a death
has left her totally without console
full of heart ache and shortened breath

Her family try whilst also grief struck
to help ease her pain and her suffering
as to the grave she walks now unstuck
with life she is done, its all far too tiring

I Remember

I Travel This Road of Life
Like Everyone
In Half Repose
The Views Quickly Dismissed
Vaguely Seen
Dimly Remembered

The Scenes
They Come And Go
Like Nightly Dreams
Vaguely Seen
Dimly Remembered

And The Memories
Of Loved Ones
Fade
Become Nebulous
Like Gossamer Notions
Vaguely seen
Dimly Remembered

Loves
Blossom And Bloom
Then Die And Ash
Like A Memory Of Death
Vaguely Seen
Dimly Remembered

The Memory Itself Dims
And Twists
Like An Image Warped
By Distended Glass
Vaguely Seen
Dimly Remembered

And At Road's End
The Special Ones
Lose Their Shape
Lose their Substance
Vaguely Seen
Dimly Remembered

With Death
The Special Ones
Once kept Close
In Thoughts
And Feelings
Go Away
Vaguely Seen
Dimly Remembered

But I Remember Her

In The Midst Of Night

Embedded image from another site

Slowly I awake and look around
I feel there’s something just not right
Deep in the corner, where it’s so dark
I see the beginning of a shining light

The more I stare the clearer it gets
Ever so brighter, bringing daytime to night
The figure I see, an Angel I think
Long blonde hair, shimmering so bright

“Come,” she said, with a voice like honey,
“Heaven is waiting, it’s full of delight,
Relax, take my hand, I’ll lead you there.”
I gave in, I could no longer fight

I reached out, her touch was so warm
Off the bed I rose, I felt so light
As I looked down I could see myself
An old sick man, such a sorry sight

Higher and higher up we flew
The earth faded, there was only white
Faintly I could hear sound, Angels singing
As we broke through into Heaven’s light

About this poem:
To explain my father passed away just recently at 2am. It was a peaceful passing and I would like to think that an Angel came to take him home.

A Sonnet to a young wife laid to rest.

Sadden breath awash with mournful sigh,
highlighting soft the hand-held Maiden's track,
a struggle felt within the tear bound eye,
as swift, those love-lane memories travel back,
sterile now, star spun smiles bright and bold,
to winter's destiny flown, without remorse or sorrow,
the faded rose thy warmth of hand did hold,
leaves but pompous prayers and pious hope to borrow,
thus the ides of winter furrow deep the brow,
whilst fiercer blows it's tormenting icy blast,
yet; love still breathes our eternal Spring somehow,
in constant cherished days, until I breathe my last,

Though short sweet this life e'er we're given,
will flower again, when joined we are in Heaven.

About this poem:
More than fifty years ago, whilst visiting the Louvre in Paris, I was emotional attracted to a painting of a young man laying his young wife in her grave, the very fact that the painting was in the Louvre merited the title of masterpiece, all the facets of emotion came pouring out of the canvas which has stayed with me ever since. So I share the emotion with you, albeit the words may be inadequate.

The Sun Will Never Shine Again

The Sun Will Never Shine Again
nor thunder will the sea.
No moonlit summer skies ahead.
There'll be no nights of ecstacy.

Tomorrow's only promise now
is barren emptiness.
The dazzling world
I once saw through raptured eyes
has fallen cold and colorless.

I remember laughter with you.
Your silhouette against the sunset captured me.
The dazzling autumn days held no glory next to you,
the starlit sky no magesty.
My very life began with you.

Now that you're gone
there's nothing left to do but cry.
Two lovers torn apart
though love will never die.
and since you've gone away
I know the sun will never shine
for me.

The sun will never shine again...

From the emerald isle
Those fillies do seek their prince
Charming
Their handsome casanova

With their gaolic charm these ladies in green
Drinking their guiness
These ladies of charm
With their beauty and smiling cavtavating

Tongue they lore their prince to their bussom
They lure their prince to there charm
They cast a spell over him

For they want to marry him
Those vixens of those emerald isle

Something Stirring (villanelle)

As night descends, casting darkness
all is silent and so very still
waiting, listening, and breathless

Into the dark of nights coldness
do you feel it, that stone cold chill
as night descends, casting darkness

The cold seeping chilling denseness
it seems to invade , to instill
waiting, listening, and breathless

Something stirring in the blackness
the noises now loud and so shrill
as night descends, casting darkness

Death shows his face full of graveness
in the dark stands waiting to kill
waiting, listening and breathless

Now life seeps away, its painless
just a gasp then it flees noiseless
as night descends, casting darkness
waiting, listening and breathless
