RE: Bring back the Common wealth of Nations

Don’t be downhearted. One day a charismatic strongman will use this as his stabbed in the back “myth”.

The creeping Thatcherism of austerity EU. France is becoming what we were yesterday just as Britain is what America was yesterday. Nationalism and free trade are heading for a divorce because it does us no good to compete with such desperation, the rebel won’t be a Franco or Pinochet who beats you into obeying business as usual. A real leader instead of a mere policemen.

RE: link to the disapeared BREXIT STICKING POINT thread

Life isn’t bad enough here and to grasp the nettle is just about not worth it. It’s too diffuse, a wave of discontent rather than an attempt at overthrow.

Anyway we allow the United States of Europe to happen and then we get a Trump later.

RE: What's the biggest threat to Western civilisation

Self-annihilating contradictions. Huge inequality with universal suffrage, welfare state with open borders, Islam with LGBT etc.

RE: Proud to be European.................

And yet it is more striking when the supposedly better educated are against free speech. A glorious European achievement like free speech is imperilled most when it’s your professionals opposing it, not the football fans. The streetwise and the working class are quite stifling and repressed at the best of times, standing out in any way often ends with a punch in the face. It’s less wrong when they’re the ones forcing rather than persuading.

RE: Proud to be European.................

The one and only way in which I’d class the rebels as being more liberal than the establishment is free speech but I reckon that’s because it’s the opposition, it would be a very foolish voice of dissent that chooses to oppose free speech.

In reality however I don’t believe there’s a lot of difference between the two sides. Who has the patient for free speech(particularly in America)? Criticising a snowflake will produce more or less the same result as criticising Donald Trump.

RE: Proud to be European.................

If i could my finger on what Brexit and Trump want/need it’s more stability and fewer gimics. I’m not singing the praises of the Soviet Union but we do want precisely the opposite of what the Slavs got by ditching the Soviet Union, they lost all stability and gained the goods.

We’re tired of doing any mad thing you want and would gladly limit choice to make the country great again. The rebels are in every sense less liberal than the establishment and the Soviet Union was illiberal in every way.

RE: Proud to be European.................

And it matters factually because today we are left and right in every way the Soviet Union wasn’t.

Slavic women are feminine the Soviets were socially conservative and they even had a wall. Nobody from the popular right is complaining that the gap between rich and poor isn’t large enough in no sense are we rebelling against the Soviet Union it looked nothing like the world we live in.

RE: Proud to be European.................

The system is global capitalist and you’ll run out of steam eventually harping on about the Soviet Union. Most people are rebelling against the EU to defend the welfare state from, its one thing to lie about £350 million extre a week for the NHS and another to want the NHS to go bankrupt because you hate everything the NHS stands for. The minority of ideologues who hate everything the NHS stands for damage Brexit and help the EU.

RE: BREXIT STICKING POINT?

We can buy more Japanese cars instead. Extra money for the mortal enemy of China cannot be a bad thing.

RE: When would you hit a woman?

When she tries to wriggle free

RE: Are we working ourselves to death?

Most people are but it’s the low wages, and the traps the payday loan companies and the fact that most things you need for a good life are out of your price range but don’t worry there’s cheap Chinese electronics and a bucket of fried chicken.

RE: Challenges

I’ll try a lot harder for family members than I ever will at work.

And with the tax system plus the pet grooming entrepreneurs I kinda resent working long hours at a job we need. My part time beats many peoples full time and that’s enough for me considering the diminishing returns.

All the challenges are small fry compared to the challenges of caring about a people. Mum on chemotherapy, best mate murdered 2 years I remember being nervous when sitting exams and qualifying to do my job but real difficulty puts work into perspective.

RE: Brexit now..........Can we vote on a united Ireland...?

I wouldn't mind. We're two islands and it's a great advantage to be an island particularly when you don't compromise your coast. Who needs lines on a map when there's all that water? It's a natural country.

RE: Who would you choose as the leader of your country?

Spiritualism is like being asleep and expansion of the days rest. Trade Unions came up with the idea 8 hours playtime everyday but that's going away now, and in the 16 hour working day a second religiousness will develop to cram more sleep into those 8 hours. After a few centuries of the world arguably improving the future looks bleak and the important thing isn't that Jesus was a nice liberal it's that people turn to him when they're nearly dead. The enlightenment is ending with this second religiousness, we forget the idea of improving or even recognising objective reality because it's too painful.

For the first time in centuries there isn't a radical plan to reshape the physical world and to retreat into the inner world is now the more comforting thought. That's what the second religiousness is.

RE: Who would you choose as the leader of your country?

And the corporate world is full of Buddhism. You practice the spiritualism in order to perform the opposite. If you're doing something that makes you feel unhappy or you believe to be wrong then you pray or meditate so you can keep doing it without guilt and then you replace the word unhappy with the word stress. Anyway the point of these isn't to improve the world, it's for the burden of the world not at all being like Jesus. In reality of course a POTUS Jesus would be soft, he'd get America taken down in a second.

RE: Make ALL drugs legal,............... take it away from teh criminals

Drug users would be older, not a little rebel thing, just beyond the point of caring. If we stop arresting them and start treating them as vulnerable all the money has to go from one to the other. A society with more social workers and fewer police officers which might not necessarily happen when you consider how pissed off people are with immigration and things like that.

RE: Why must adults be mature?

Why not behave completely on impulse all the time? Nobody actually likes anybody anymore and civilisation is over-rated, there might never be a harsh winter again.

RE: The Rat Race

And another thing to consider is that global capitalism is an extreme form of Britishishness the classic liberalism developed centuries ago, todays capitalism is like the British empire but everywhere however our founders were only a bit capitalist.

You won’t come up with a priceless idea like free speech on the basis of profit and loss in fact it is likely to damage quarterly profits. Free speech exists because of everybody’s innate god-given value, it’s a principle of faith to believe we are better off with tabloid and opinions expressed not because they’re of merit. Free speech isn’t a capitalist idea and if you believe otherwise try speaking freely around your employer.

RE: The Rat Race

To summarise the issue you might say the problem with global capitalism. America made better use of America during the Cold War, the capitalists were much more meritable when socialism existed.

There must be a competition between different systems to avoid rat race monopoly and the death of new ideas. Things worked better when the bosses were forced to look you in the eye by proximity and they worked better when capitalism understood that failure to deliver the goods might lead to people choosing something else. So long as the capitalists believe that you’re their customers regardless of what they do, then you’ll get shat on.

RE: The Rat Race

Basically the problem of live for today combined with the end of history - the prevailing attitude in the west - is to have no future.

Economics, politics and sciences all lack a sense of wonder now expressed by TINA and theory of everything. There’s nothing worse than believing you’ve got it all worked out and thinking there are only a few details left to iron out, it’s a dearth of imagination or perhaps the dearth of imagination creates the end of history.

Anyway for this reason I back the reactionaries. The only alternative to stagnation is to retrace our steps, reinstate the older and smaller and less diverse mercantile capitalism that rallied around the country and made better use of local resources. To understand the difference between buying where it’s easiest and buying where it’s cheapest, cheap goods are not so cheap when you factor in the costs of 200 million western lives damaged or ruined. All the crackheads and broken homes and smashed communities which incur costs to us not included in the price of imports.

RE: The Rat Race

The economic equivalent of gainsaying. Little individualism inside big capitalism is in a word petty. A thread full of people saying nothing original whilst arguing over who is most unique encapsulates everything wrong with modern western generations. People live their lives by a wee “Chesney likes this”.

RE: The Rat Race

I believe there’s a limit on how big, how unequal and how competitive the system can be before keeping up with Jones and jostling for place become a bad thing. Inequality becomes not a spur for doing more - so many dropout in a rat race - but a hostile takeover of people’s ideas and personality.

Slavishly working hard towards someone else’s useless toss. Hijacked into a rat race where the game replaces the fruits of your labour, landing men on the moon and the polio vaccine losing more and more ground to Facebook, pet grooming entrepreneurs and dresses. Keeping up with the Jones being not the only means and motive for capitalism, but the result as well.
