An Eye For An Eye

I don’t believe that somebody who willfully deprived another person of his life, deserves to live. I’m not talking about killing somebody in self defense. Providing that minimum force is applied, anybody should have the right to protect his own life and property as well as that of another person or persons.professor

If anybody is killed while in the process of committing a crime (say a robbery or a burglary), all those participating in the crime, even the planners of the crime sitting at home, should be tried for murder. They should have foreseen that something of that nature could have happened.scold

And if a person caused the death of somebody else due to negligence or recklessness, he should be severely punished. If somebody failed to do something when he could have prevented the death of another person without endangering his own or other lives, he should be held accountable.sigh

Attempted murder should carry the same punishment as murder. Doing a bad job is no reason for mitigation. It is the intent that matters, not the outcome. If he intended to kill somebody, he should be punished to the same extend had he succeeded. What is to stop him or her from trying again?confused

Neither can politics or passion be offered as mitigation. You don’t kill somebody if you don’t agree with his political views. Inexcusable to say the least! shock

And love does not inspire murder. That is vengeance, caused by obsession, possessiveness, jealousy, or something else in that line. If the intent was to kill, it is murder.talk to hand

Hi kitten. Personally I consider if the person has killed other person protecting the honor, a family and property, it is self-defense, and it has to be justified.hug
Hi Ummka
Yes, everybody deserves the right to defend himself and what he holds dear.

Hi Cat,

Just imagine all the job opportunities for the innocent and willing applause

Now you're talking. I did not even consider that angle.laugh

well the one thing that always bothers me is alcoholas it always used as way of getting lesser sentence in the courts in Ireland ..lie murder is murder but it seems if you had loads of drink its a lesser crime not right in my way of thinking
Hi Pat,
I'd like to see it as mandatory for habitual criminals.professor

@ Cat - wave ... You say: "I don’t believe that somebody who wilfully deprived another person of his life, deserves to live."

To follow through, someone has to kill the killer, therefore are you going to kill the killer who killed the killer also etc...... doh

Universal law states that no person has the right to kill or hold someone against their will... This kind of leaves one with a dilemma, what do we do with criminals if you can't kill or imprison them..... dunno confused

In South Africa there is little or no emphasis on rehabilitation. The jails are overcrowded. Criminals with long sentences are released to make place for new convicts. Those released are back in within a few months, if not weeks.frustrated

Hi Hans
Right, nobody has the right to kill but there are different kinds of killings. Not all are deemed as murder. In war, you kill or be killed. In a way it is self defense even though your country may be the aggressor. Manslaughter is not murder and a sanctioned killing like an execution is not murder.

Criminals have to be removed from the streets to prevent them from doing more wrongs; be that for rehabilitation, punishment or execution. The criminal has forfeited his rights to freedom. He had a choice in the matter while the victim had none.professor

Well, cat, it is a difficult situation with criminals. Many say, that like much in life, it's far easier and cheaper to do things to prevent criminality in the first place. Education, parenting training, nutrition, jobs, etc. But although this makes sense to me, the data are lacking to support the effectiveness of such. So programs to do "secondary prevention", after prison, such as restorative justice, are now the rage. And again, they make sense, and actually do have some evidence supporting their effectiveness. But what is effective? 30-50% prevention of going back to jail. Progress, but hardly stellar.
Hi Cat,

Then we have the criminals who kill people in US states that have no death penalty! Case in point Wisconsin. The state I live in! In Madison, WIS. about 2 yrs ago, a deputy sheriff shot his wife and her sister to death! He pleaded mental defect and went to prison for about a year. Had a new trial because he had a physical problem. He was released from prison and is now free! Where is the justice? He took 2 lives and isn't paying for it!

It seems that all of these killers plead mental defect and get off or have there sentences reduced!frustrated

Where is the justice?
Hi jim
My brother was murdered by his wife. Shot while he was sleeping. She pleaded temporary insanity due to a prescribed drug. She spent a half a night (when it happened) in prison. She married a toyboy a few months later and squandered my brother's money on him.

Now you tell me where is the justice.doh

Cat, looks as if there is none! Because of this, people have no fear of killing someone! Makes me very angry!very mad
Just recently a man spent 44 years on death row.
It was then proven he was innocent of the crime.
At times the police want to convict someone to further their career.
Not really caring if they have the right person.
They just need a body..............wave
Hi Jim
Last year roughly 49 people were murdered in SA each day. That is about 33 per 100,000. It rate among the worse. And it escalates each year.frustrated

@ BC - It's prosecutors collecting scalps. They then parlay them into a judgeship by demonstrating they're 'tough on crime'. devil
Hanged by the b@lls is too good for 'em, Cat! very mad

@Molly - Cat mentioned a murder rate of forty-nine PER DAY!! wow

BTW - I've seen it claimed here that South African have a better chance of being murdered than dying of natural causes. shock
True? dunno

It is cruel no matter what to put anyone in solitary for many years.
23 hours locked up one hour out.
I am grateful for DNA as more than one prisoner has been proven innocent.

There is one sheriff in the US who has all the prisoners living in tents, they have to work and this is what is needed.
Work and education.
Prisons today are a revolving door..........

Hi Molly
That is 49 murders per day. It may seem exaggerated but according to Interpol it is deflated. They did an audit on our hospital records and say the figure should be as much as 50% higher.doh

Hi Miclee,
And the worst of it is that a very large proportion of them is never solved. Our police force is ineffective. All the experienced cops were put on early retirement to make place for affirmative action.doh

Hi BC
Here the sit and watch TV all day. Or play pool. Some even have their cell phones in the cells.doh

I liked Pat's solution but few would take it. Always the chance of getting out early, a successful jailbreak ...

That's terrible about your brother. As for the statistics, a guy here was murdered when he went to a house party to ask them (politely) to keep the noise down. He was knifed by one of the merry party-goers who didn't like being told what to do. Point is - we're all still talking about it. Six or seven years ago, the only murder we've had here in my small town for a decade or more.

That wasn't what your blog was about. Perfect world? Put a microchip in someone's brain which will explode if they try to do it again. Trouble is, way too SF to actually do, but it would be an elegant solution and put their own survival in their own hands. sigh

I do disagree with one thing, a spontaneous love-turned-hate lashing-out is not the same as premeditated murder. People serve life-sentences for losing their tempers once, while career criminals work the system and get out after minimum sentences.
No I don't believe in an eye for an eye cause It obviously wouldn't bring the person or person who were killed.
Hi CC
No, nothing can bring the person back but it will prevent the same person from killing another.

rolling on the floor laughing Okay Cat, Ireland is definitely a safer place to live so laugh

SA people talk about living in compounds and having barbed wire and guard dogs around their houses.

Wow, that is no way to live.

Some people here still leave keys on the front doorslaugh
Hi Molly
Indeed. But it used to be a safe place. I grew up going to bed without locking doors.sigh
