Weed more dangerous than previously thought

Despite the steady relaxing of anti-drug laws surrounding cannabis, the medical community is still split on the safety of the substance.

Fear of death creates the idea of beauty

Embedded image from another site

WARNING!

Scientific experiments have proven that if you read the following story, you will likely be changed. Your ideas about religion, politics -- yes, even your appreciation of art and beauty will be changed... at least temporarily.

So if you like the way you feel about life right now, maybe you should skip this article.

"The all encompassing blackness..." --William James 1910
I'm going to describe the cutting-edge of psychological theories, called Terror Management Theory or TMT. It's been known for a while but has been kept off the radar by the media. And that's partially because TMT has been used against us (you will see how). It's a theory that explains human behavior and its most basic psychological motivator.

Most everyone can agree that a face of a certain proportion is beautiful, that a painting or certain place is beautiful. But in order to be beautiful, the object has to be observed and analysed by us. There is no inherent beauty in nature. It is we who give these things our "appreciation" as being beautiful.

What we are reacting to is pattern, organization and symbolism. We gravitate to these qualities because they represent the opposite of entropy. Entropy is death. Order is life.

This idea is so important that it deserves to be explored. It's a new-old idea called Terror Management Theory.

What is TMT?

Terror Management Theory (TMT) states that all human behavior is motivated by the fear of our own mortality. The fact that you and I will eventually die and be "no more" is a fact known and understood only by humans. Although animals have an avoidance of death, they live in the present. They don't comprehend their destiny. Only humans have the capacity to project reality in time and imagine the future. Only humans realize the significance of being "no more".

The theory originated with anthropologist Ernest Becker's 1973 Pulitzer Prize-winning work of nonfiction, The Denial of Death, in which Becker argues all human action is taken to ignore or avoid the anxiety generated by the inevitability of death.

The terror associated with our unstoppable annihilation creates a subconscious conflict or anxiety called cognitive dissonance. We try to cope with having to accept two contrary ideas. On one hand, we want to become involved with life and think of ourselves as a meaningful part of the world. On the other hand, what does anything matter anyway if we ultimately become "no more" -- if all this wonderment of life is temporary?

According to Becker, people spend their entire lives trying to make sense of these conflicting thoughts. We are so afraid of death that we create alternate realities -- realities where we won't cease to be. We take comfort in the fact that others share this alternate reality. Often symbols are used to reinforce our confidence in what psychologists call our worldview.

Psychologists speak of an event which stimulates awareness of our own death as mortality salience. Mortality salience is usually achieved in experiments by inserting questions about such things as the subjects death plans or how old his grandfather was when he died. Half get the mortality salience and half get benign questions. Other times they flash the word DEATH at one twenty-forth of a second on a screen -- so fast that the subjects cannot see it even when they're told it is there. Yet it works.

TMT psychologists view human culture as a belief system constructed to explain and give meaning to life and resist confronting the horror of death. One of the requirements of a successful culture is to substitute the reality of existential death with an achievable afterlife. If not literally, then symbolically. Cemetery stones and burial monuments are examples of this. Cultures also reward enduring accomplishments to civilization with material awards, namesakes and inclusions in human history.

Hy Het Sy Gat Gesien - He Came Short

The Afrikaans word ‘gat’ has more than one meaning. The first refers to a hole in the ground or in any other object while the second meaning is more crude. It refers to a person’s or animal’s backside; more specifically his a**hole.

The expression ‘Hy het sy gat gesien’ can thus be translated to English in more than one way:
A) He saw his hole
B) He saw his grave (as a grave is a hole in the ground)
C) He saw his a**.

The third form is the popular form for at least the last 50 years since somebody added ‘without a mirror’, and mostly used in the future tense. Effectively saying you will see your backside without at mirror; meaning that you will come short or that you will not get it right.grin

But this is completely out of line with the original saying which refers to a hole in the ground; more specifically an open grave.

Towards the end of the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) many Boers surrendered and were called ‘hensoppers’ meaning ‘hands uppers’ or traitors. The ‘hensoppers’ were often executed by the passing Boer commandos.thumbs down

Such a traitor was condemned to death by court-martial. They were forced to dig their own graves and then, while facing the grave, shot from behind to drop into the hole.

If somebody would later ask: “What happened to so and so?” the answer would have been “Hy het sy gat gesien”, meaning that he saw his grave (while being shot as a traitor).hole

So, in the about 30 to 60 years since the war, this expression had evolved into something with a completely different meaning. Languages are truly alive and this is especially true In the case of a young language like Afrikaans which was only recognized as a language about a hundred years ago or so.

But then it is also a very versatile expression with other meanings like for an instance:
Die bottel het sy gat gesien. Meaning
The bottle - Die Bottel - is empty.
or
Die suiker het sy gat gesien.
The sugar - Die Suiker - is finished.

It is estimated that about 25 million people worldwide now can fully understand and speak Afrikaans.

The Myth Of On-Line Friends

The definition of friends differs vastly on-line when compared to real life. On-line friendship appears to be a pseudo relationship that will last for only as long as it is beneficial to both parties and what may appear to be your best friend today, may become a sworn enemy overnight.confused

The farcical relationship between two on-line friends displays a zero tolerance to the imperfections of the other parties. It will only survive for as long as you tickle the ears of your on-line friends. Friendship in real life is much more robust and resilient against differences in opinion or views while minor squabbles are laid to rest so much easier.handshake

On-line friendship is volatile and turbulent; it needs something to feed on. We strive to say what pleases our on-line friends, in fact we try so hard to sound politically correct to our friends that don’t say what we really mean; all in an effort to preserve the friendship, but it real life we’re not scared of such issues and such frail friendships are not even worth mentioning.snooty

Friendship on-line is an illusion. In real life, you won’t even count cyber friends as acquaintances; simply because you don’t know them. Yet, we call strangers our friends while we don’t know anything about them. For all we know, our best friends on-line may be perverts, p*dophile, ex-convicts, scammers or any of the likes.mumbling

It is true that birds of feather flock together; we communicate with those with more or less the same outlook, but can we really call them friends? I'm not so sure if they satisfy the general criteria of being friends.dunno
