Books and Reading

I recently came across a Best Books list, and thought it would be interesting to see what people thought of it, and if they had read many of them (No, watching the film doesn’t count laugh )
‘Best’ is subjective, and this list is probably Western-centric, but it does cover a lot of genres.

I can never remember not reading, from earliest childhood to the present day. Reading has always been an important part of my life. It is how I discover new words; new styles; new ideas and new worlds.

As kids we used to trot down to the local library on a Saturday morning to gleefully choose our books for the week. I didn’t read many classics as a kid, I was more into Enid Blyton or other adventure books.
It was only as a teenager I started reading deeper books, but I still enjoy a good mystery/murder novel.

I prefer to watch Shakespeare plays being performed rather than reading them, and I, to my shame, have never got to love James Joyce. I never really liked romantic novels either, especially chick-lit.

I love travel books. I get totally engrossed in the journey and the adventure. Dervla Murphy was my favourite travel writer growing up. She was so independent; fearless; bohemian and different to the people I knew in real life that I loved her, and followed her travels with glee.

Apart from all Oscar Wilde books (he is my favourite author, being witty and irreverent), a few books stand out in my mind as being memorable:

The Alchemist by Paulo Cuehlo
Sarum by Edward Rutherford
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Lorca
A Place Apart – Dervla Murphy
Gulliver's Travels - Dean Swift
Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre

What are your favourite books/authors.genres?

Best Book list to follow....

The Shaming of Eve

s*xual Subjugation of Women

Women have been subjugated and oppressed throughout history. We are told to deny our desires and feelings, as they are wrong or shameful. We are made to feel dirty or wrong for thinking the way we do. This "double standard" still exists.

Women were once considered chattel or property. We were the property of our father. Then, ownership was transferred to our husband at marriage. Historically, her value was placed on her virginity. If it was intact, she could get a higher bride price for her father. If she was not a virgin, her value went down and the prospective husband was not required to pay as much to the bride’s father. She was considered soiled, impure, damaged goods.

The USA was founded with a puritanical Judeo-Christian belief system. Yes, there still exists the belief of the patriarchal hierarchy, men have the power, women are second class citizens. Biblically, Eve was blamed for for the downfall of mankind and our expulsion from the Garden of Eden. But Adam ate the apple, as well. Yet, women are seen as a deceiver or temptress of man.

So, when a woman dares step out of line, by owning her sexuality and asserting her power as a human being, the reaction can be very negative. Derogatory or shaming words are meant to put a woman in her place. To shut her down and silence her.

But, when a man expresses his desires, he is seen as being a healthy human being owning his own power and sexuality.

Women are beautiful, powerful and s*xual beings. We must stand up and be proud of who we are. Enough of the double standard and staying quietly in our place.

A strong woman can be frightening or threatening to some men. If a man is strong and powerful, he is praised as a capable leader. If a woman acts the same way, she is seen as a b*tch. She may be called a lesbian, dyke or any number of derogatory words.

All the negative reactions, to a woman asserting her power, are meant to put her back in her place.

As women, we must be proud of who we are. Assert you rights as a human being. We are not inferior, less than or second class citizens. Take your place as an equal.

America is great but not the greatest and can still be better

Right off the beginning, I would clarify this statement to be not absolutely true. It depends upon so many things and many reasons, to some that this is absolutely a baloney statement.

First off you have to live in a country that is far better than America, ie SWITZERLAND, to laugh at this slogan. You can be very lucky and live in the other countries that can absolutely ridicule this statement or the goal of the President in making it great again.

I am referring to most of us, who once felt that this country was great and that it can get back its luster again.

Note: if 69 percent or so of the world are living in poverty and way below the standards of an ordinary American citizen, I am sure you say, America was great and that it can be great again.

Another note: Why would there be no other country that consistently for the past 50 years been sought by illegal immigrants?

Anyways good morning blog land and may you all have a good day. bouquet

Is It Normal for Men to Ogle Women?

Embedded image from another site
"Honest dear, I'm looking at the nice shoes in the shop window", but we all know what your really looking at.

Guys, do you have Wandering Eye Syndrome? Well, it really isn't your fault.

In one-fifth of a second, the male brain decides whether a stranger is attractive. If she is, his pupils dilate, his heart rate spikes, his testosterone surges and his eyes assume a vacant stare.

And it's all completely involuntary and natural, says brain researcher, neuropsychiatrist and author Louann Brizendine, author of "The Male Brain."

Brizendine also says men are more visual, more driven to s*xual pursuit and more predisposed to cheat than women.

“It's a reflex that's built into the brain circuits,” she told the Toronto Star. “At its core biological basis, it's unfair to criticize men for that initial unconscious circuitry.”

Brizendine has a good point, and as we've gotten older and (a little) more mature, we've become more forgiving of our guy if his eyes glaze over a hottie passing by. As long as he doesn't SAY she's hot, we're OK with it.

the president for impeachment

I was logging in to CS and there it was, the most intriguingly acute, million dollar question: Should Obama be impeached?

My question is, on what ground?

While many presidents have been accosted of such a paralyzing accusation including but not limited to Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon, not one was truly impeached during the 20th century.

Should we change our laws to accommodate modern crimes? What do you think?

Note: It looks like the current administration is incapable of managing our government based on our expectations.

Thanks all for your reads and comments. frustrated confused

Are Love And Happiness Mutually Inclusive?

We all seek love; believing it will make us happy. Nothing can be further from the truth. Love on its own cannot make us happy and it is perfectly possible to be happy without it. Love is only one component of happiness.professor

Please note that I’m talking specifically about the love between a man and a woman here.conversing

Happiness is not an emotion; it is a state of mind. But it does not come by itself. You have to work on it constantly. You have to make other people happy so they can contribute to your happiness as well.roll eyes

We often confuse the euphoria of being in love with happiness. It only temporary blinds us from all the other things that make us unhappy. It will soon wear off. Our unhappiness with other things will have a negative impact on our love and pull it down as well. We have to be happy to enjoy unrestricted love.love

Many things can make you unhappy but only you can make you happy. To be happy you must be satisfied with your life. You cannot claim to be happy while you hate your job, your house, or your sister-in-law. You have to identify and eliminate the things that make you unhappy. (Don’t eliminate your sister-in-law. It will bring more unhappiness. You won’t get away with 10 months.)grin

Take stock of the things that make you unhappy. Rectify the things that you can change, and then re-evaluate the things that you cannot change and accept that you cannot change it. Contentment is the first step towards happiness.hmmm

Love is not self-sustaining and does not bring lasting happiness, but it thrives on it. Work on your happiness and love will soon follow.daydream

Change your name change your life

And no I don't mean on CS although some of us did and there was a real difference smile

How much does your name influence your life? When someone gives you a nickname, is it an annoyance or a relief? Lovers give each other pet names - a subconscious desire to change their loved one into a person who belongs only to them.

Slightly worrying when the new lover is called by the pet name given to the ex, mind. "Darling" is one thing, "Squooglemix" may be another.

If your name is, for example, Benjamin, you may introduce yourself as Benjamin, or Ben, or Benny, or Benjy, whichever is your 'happy' name.

When others add their own variations, especially when they've just met you, how irritating is that? It's like they don't even know you and already they're trying to change you. I don't even answer to the name Liz, not because I dislike the name, I simply assume the person is talking to someone else. It is absolutely not me.

I'd love to know if anyone has completely changed their name, even if only for a specific group of people, and noticed a real difference. Believers in numerology insist that changing your name - changing one letter can make the difference - can change your life. I have now been known in real life as Biff for over a year - I like it, and I have certainly changed in some ways, so it made me curious.
