Normally I would say it should be the riders choice. Unfortunately if a motorcycle rider is involved in an accident and killed because he wasn't wearing a brain bucket, it almost always involves someone else. Whether it be the emergency responders, another car, or innocent bystanders, no one should be forced to see someone's brains scattered all over the street just because a motorcyclist doesn't like wearing a helmet.

In NZ it's compulsory to wear a helmet and must have headlight on at all times too whilst riding a motor bike. Also a lot of people here wear hi-vis over their jackets too.
Penalties For Breaking The Law If you’re caught without a helmet in Ohio, you may face a fine of up to $75. In some states, failure to wear a helmet can affect your ability to collect compensation if you’re injured in a crash. Ohio, however, specifically provides for that situation. Whether or not you’re wearing a helmet cannot be taken into account when the court decides the compensation you receive as the result of an accident. In other words, you won’t get stuck without compensation just because you weren’t wearing a helmet.
One of my most vivid childhood memories is of a motorcyclist's brains smashed open all over a curb, little kid crumpled up under a sheet. I still associate Greece with that image.
Uh, yeah. No way am I getting on a motorcycle without a helmet and it doesn't matter what the circumstances - law or not.
It's interesting that we are required to wear a seat belt in an enclosed vehicle, yet it's "okay" (in some states) to not be required to wear a helmet whilst riding on a seat above two tires - not enclosed whatsoever, and no seat belts. Go figure …
Should a motorcyclist be required to wear a helmet? Quite honestly, I don't know. But I DON'T think so. When one considers that helmets are worn as a matter of self-protection, then I think it should be left to the discernment of the individual. If one wishes to "protect" themself from the possibility of injury and/or death, from a motorcycle accident, then it should be their option to wear, or not wear one. I DON'T feel that it's right/correct to "order" someone to wear a helmet. Or a bathing suit, or any of the 1,001 other things that laws provide for, in this day and age. I'm NOT saying that having laws prescribing such things are "bad", just that such things should be incorporated into one's life, as determined by the individual. And NOT by "law". JMO
KIBALUV: My cousin was wearing a helmet long before they were required, but he was killed anyway, when hit by a motorist who turned right in front of him.
My oldest brothers father in law was also killed while wearing a helmet. In his case he may have survived had he been wearing a full faced helmet as he hit face first on the car that pulled out in front of him.

They are compulsory in the U.K.Even a slight knock on your head could leave you paralyzed and disabled. As a bker i wear the most expensive and the best , You stand more chance of not becoming a vegetable or killed with one,
Yes you should wear a helmet on a motorcycle. It could save your life. Not only that it may cause less distress to your relatives when they have to identify your remains if you have a fatal accident.

You wouldn't get me on a motorbike, with or without a helmet! Far too dangerous.
That said, I don't like the "nanny state" law that says one must wear a helmet. In my country, a helmet is legally compulsory for a pushbike too! Damn crazy.
When I've got a licence to ride the motorcycle, there did not have a law of wearing helmet. Then, it is quite difficult to get use with its.
Therefore, in my opinion, any one who prefer to against that law... must keep their surrender document to present to the authorizers .. if there have any accident during their ride the motorcycles, they will not only pay the penalty but also include of any damage fee no matter they are right, wrong..

In my country you have to wear a helmet, else you get a penalty and they tell you, you can't drive until you wear one. So then you have to walk with your motorcycle. You even can get a penalty when the band is not tight enough under your chin.
Of course the traffic in my small country is very crowded. Traffic jams everywhere, and they keep producing extra roads and lanes on the highway, but that only helps for a few years. I guess in 20 years the netherlands is one big highway with some buildings on it.
Yes unequivocally - And for 2 reasons. With Rights go responsibilities 1. The Riders own Personal safety In a crash no matter whomsoever or whatsoever caused it 2. The Riders Legal duty of responsibility to & respect for other people or relations who, after possible survival would incur responsibilities of looking after the needs & welfare of The survivor (a possible vegetable ) !!!
as with seat belts, air bags etc.. none are fool proof. ppl die or get hurt as they slide down a road. wearing a helmet only protects to a degree. but when a persons body is sliding down the road its worthless. besides most bikers wear one as a fashion kinda thing. unless a helmet can be made to be 100% effective. wearing one by law is plain stupidity. as with heads helmets break too. either make a superman quality helmet or make motorcycles illegal. thats the only way helmets r worth any thing
