RE: R.I.P. Great Groundbreaking Actor; Sidney Poitier. What an amazing life !

I mourn his passing. I believe I first saw him in The Bedford Incident, Guess Whose Coming To Dinner was great. I was a kid that year. We were at the drive in. I was the only kid. Wow they (my parents and a neighbor couple) talked about that movie for a week. To Sir with Love, I saw it with my HS sweetheart while my dad saw it on the SS France. We all loved it. With those two movies he broke so much ground and knocked down a lot of walls. As a young man after doing a stint as an armored car guard and a Checker Motors taxi driver in NYC, when I was done with college (the first time) I did spy stuff, secret police stuff. It was more attractive to me than hustling stock and bonds on Wall Street. Whatever. I was out of that game by 86, but in 92 I so loved Sneakers when it came out. It was been there, done that. A great movie. He was the Barbados Ambassador to Japan for awhile. He was also Sir Sidney Potier. We will miss him. RIP Sir

Tiger incident

I am giving the officer a break because not only had he not expected when leaving home that evening to have to confront a literal man eating tiger, but also because he was for all practical purposes alone in the dark with both the only flashlight and the only firearm and charged with saving the man being eaten in a situation where the clock was quickly ticking down. So the two alternative things he could have tried that as an armchair general I came up with I forgive him for not thinking of them and note also that one is a direct violation of every police department's policy and he would probably be fired if he admitted doing so (no, not shoot the man in the tiger's mouth to put him out of misery then go to dinner while the tiger eats his, but it is tempting). They were, use a long stick or branch poked through the fence into the tiger's side. Have the medic from the FD pull the man away as soon as the tiger turns to bite at the branch. B) instead of firing the pistol into the tiger's skull from 8" away, on the first shot miss a little so the bullet misses the tiger, but the noise and flash makes it jump away.while the EMT from the FD ibid. If that doesn't work, then, and only then, execute the tiger as was done. Both A & B could have been tried and maybe today both the man and the tiger would be alive.
But as said, that is Monday quarterbacking, arm chair general stuff, in which i slowly sip beverage by a heater with no stressful situation at all going on.
So the dumba** wanted his friends to see pictures of him at the zoo. LoL, mission accomplished I think.

Tiger incident

Sadly there are now so few tigers left that the best chance of the species making it another 100 years is if they all live in zoos.

So sad, in my youth there were ten known tiger species with tens of thousands alive and today only a six species remain and the number alive outside of zoos is probably fewer than a thousand on the whole planet. 500 is generally considered the minimum necessary size genetic pool for a species to survive. Most species of tiger have been hunted to well below this number.
Human hunters with firearms to include machine guns and hand grenades in the case of China are the biggest threats to any of the species surviving. During the time of Mao Tse Tung, China's government had declared tigers to be a pest and the Chinese Army using modern weapons of war actively hunted them and eradicated tigers from many parts of Asia. That policy was not discontinued until after Mao's death by then many of the Asian tiger species were extinct. Urban sprawl accompanied by polluted waterways and loss of habitat is another factor leading to the shrinkage of their population. When the last tiger is gone Earth will be much less in my opinion.

RE: Joe Biden's top 25 moments of 2021

Today the White House was talking about Joe Biden's many diplomatic successes since January. Nothing specific, just that he has had a lot of them. I am sure they would not exaggerate or lie about something like that. innocent

RE: Quantum Leap

I watched a lot of episodes of Quantum Leap. I used to enjoy that one and the time tunnel shows and also that one about a rift sending dinosaurs to the present.

RE: Do you Prefer to Work or stay Retired?

I try not to work much, but I find that whenever I goof up and my cash reserves drop below a quarter million dollars my comfort level goes back up as soon as I return to working and refill the bank account. I find I can usually make a quarter million last me 5 to 10 years, but it often takes at least 6 months to earn that much, so every 5 to 10 years I will work for a few months, then good off some more.

RE: Omicron variant appears to be ‘super mild‘ mutation with Covid death rate not jumping

Absolutely no one in the US who has been vaccinated with both doses has died of Omnicron yet. There have been some who did die of Omnicron, but none of those had the vaccine. Natural immunity did not work for them. They were also Trump supporters, as too were most of those dead of the Delta variant, so this is all going to the Democrat plan. Soon all of the Trump supporters will be extinct.

His voice just knocked me over laughing. Good stuff.

No evidence of Covid involvement. He hasn't had it so far as anyone knows.
He has the worse king of malignant grade 4 brain tumor, one where the usual prognosis of life is 15 months if they get all possible treatments, 5 - 6 months max if untreated with debilitation long before that. Anyway they wanted him to go in for Proton radiation treatment next week for 6 days. His mom said (and I understand it) no way in Hell. I want this one to be his best Christmas and a good memory, not one of him spending it puking and too sick to open his presents. Ueah, I get it. His last Christmas, why not make it a good one?
Her aunt says she spends a lot of time crying when the kid sin't around. I get that too.

Yes supply chains and economy are being damaged all over the world. By now most Americans have a decent surplus of toilet paper so we are ready for that shortage to return. In the Washington, DC area this week several surrounding counties announced without warning on Friday that because they have had several dozen children and teachers become sick with Covid after our Thanksgiving week holiday they are, effectively immediately going back to virtual classes only until after the Christmas Holidays and New Years. This has upset many parents who can't work if they are staying home with their kids (most day care centers are still closed) and in at least 1 county the teachers are talking strike if they don't get at least a 10% pay raise to compensate them for the increased hours and work virtual classes require.

RE: Mysterious "HUT" seen on the moon.

Yuh, supposedly the Chinese Rover on Mars has spotted one too off in the distance. But the Chinese Rover has been sent there to scope it out from up close. It is a a few miles away and the rover is slow, so they are thinking it should be near it by mid January and if it is a building the world will see that, but some think it is just a big rock. Time will tell.

RE: DeSantis: Send Biden's Planeloads of Illegal Aliens to Delaware, Martha's Vineyard, Not Florida

It sounds like DeSantis is either incredibly ignorant of what the law says, or he has been smoking too much marijuana and his brain is fried.
What defines an illegal alien is defined by law. The same law allows the Federal Govt. to determine the status. Once the ICE says this person is no longer an illegal, that is it, they aren't illegal anymore. Title 8 USC. DeSantis should sit down and read it.

Likewise of course no state has the authority to close their borders to any resident of any state or any person in the country with the assent of ICE.

Can we sue the media for reporting stupid things DeSantis says?

RE: #19...

It is over hyped. I have 2 broken off at the gum line with the roots still in there. One has been that way for years with no issues. If I deep probe with by tongue I can feel the pieces of root. Like I say, an issue over hyped by dentists who want your money.
I was hoping that English doctor working on tooth bud implants taken from aborted fetus (with no rejection factor as fetal tissue (aka stem cells) are transportable into any person) would begin marketing them before I grew to old to think about it. Sadly however the Dental and Orthodontist professions in the UK banded together to halt his medical trials so there has been no progress in over a decade. He had been hoping for a patron to pay for transporting all of the work to a country where restrictions would be less of an obstacle, but no big bucks spenders have stepped forward yet.

RE: Omicron variant appears to be ‘super mild‘ mutation with Covid death rate not jumping

Not sure where you are in reality, but the US has had a 37% jump across the board the week after Thanksgiving. Too many stupid people got together for Thanksgiving without masks. Now the ICU wards are getting full again.

RE: At least 50 dead as tornadoes devastate Kentucky; Amazon warehouse collapses in Illinois

"One tornado was on the ground for over 200 miles."

I don't think anyone, anywhere, has ever seen anything like that before. Normally they go a few miles then bounce up in the air and come down again 20 or 30 miles away, stay on the ground for a mile or 2, then up in the air again, maybe down a third time another 30 miles away, but usually just dissipating after the second bounce. Staying on the ground without bouncing for a distance equivalent from DC to NYC is something I have never heard of before.

Windy tonight here with a lot high gusts.

summercold = Which Art of War are you speaking of? The comic book written by Sun Tzu or the thick tome written by Jomini?

Thus far no one vaccinated has been identified as dying from Omnicron.

RE: CURRENT EVENTS

The news report about a fleet of UFOs destroying Panama and Columbia yesterday turned out to be totally false. Someone mistook a flock of seagulls for UFOs and a small trash fire for a burning city and reported it as an invasion. This sort of thing often happens when marijuana is legalized.

RE: Being vaccinated for work.

It depends on which state, and how the politcal wind blows there. Some state;s courts have ruled you have no right to a job and you can fired for not meeting the employer's dress code of being masked, or requiring vaccination. Others have gone in the other direction while the Federal Govt has not yet heard the appeals. Meanwhile some Federal cases are beginning due to Biden's ruling about masks for Federal employees which is not what the Federal employee unions wanted to hear.

If you recall a few decades ago DuPont Chemical one day required all of the female workers at a mostly female factory to undergo sterilization so as to prevent any birth defects and lawsuits resulting from the women's exposure to certain chemicals at work. Those refusing would be fired. A higher salary was dangled for those who had their ovaries removed (to be verified by a gynecologist team employed by Dupont). Most of the women refused, sued and in Federal Court lost their case. Many then underwent irreversible sterilization at their own expense to keep their job. About 2 years after the court decision DuPont closed that plant, laid the woman off, and relocated the plant to Bangladesh where the salaries are super low and no one gets days off.

RE: CDC recommendations

The latest evidence show that while some of the virus leaves an infected person as an aerosol with a range of about 6 feet which settles to the ground within an hour, about 10 to 20% of it leaves the infected person in much smaller particles and can be classified as airborne with a range of several miles and which can remain aloft for many hours or days. So yes, it is possible for a virus to be ingested if it lands on your food, or use the mucus membrane of your eyes as the vector for entering your body.

The Delta variant is 1,000 times more transmissible than the earlier a or c or Mu variants.

Data from ICUs around the world show those not vaccinated and infected enough to require intubation in an ICU are 40 times more likely to die than those vaccinated are.
