Hi. Nope, SSI is for those who are disabled and in need of the services. I am what the government terms chronically unemployed. I actively search for jobs, attend job fairs and have applied for over 3500 jobs in 25+ months.
I still maintain that I am luckier than most. I have no children living at home, do not own a home or a vehicle. I am presently healthy (knock on wood), and I live off the charity of family, who are being gracious in helping me.
I have made payment arrangements with creditors ~ and they do work with you even if all you can pay is a dollar or two a month. I am in college, full time, to earn my BA and despite the fact that I might go hungry a time or two, it will not kill me and the assistance programs might not be able to help me but I know that they do help others who need it possibly more than I do.
Very true that there is monthly income cap. Unfortunately, I bring in no money, other than about $800 a year from my student stipends, thank goodness for grants & scholarships, otherwise I would not get anything.
Honestly, I think that some feel that because it is their tax dollars that being used to support the program, then they should have the right to dictate how those foodstamps are being spent.
Not really related to the food stamp issue but in my personal situation, I broke down and applied for food stamps at the beginning of the month. I answered each question honestly and discovered that I was ineligible for them because I was a full-time college student, between the ages of 24-50. If I had children under the age of 18, was married, had a disability, or over the age of 50, I would have qualified for the assistance.
Apparently, being chronically unemployed (2+ yrs) and broke while attending college to better my situation does not make me eligible for assistance......
I see what you are saying Jan. I think for most it is the idea that their tax dollars are going to "waste" and being "abused" by those who take advantage of the system; therefore they feel that they should have a say in how those food stamps are being spent. I personally feel that they should be spent on healthy foods but that is just me; I do see where it would be helpful for families to buy processed foods. I don't eat a major amount of junk foods but then again I do enjoy chocolate once in a great while.
I do agree that dietary advice is needed for all; being able to see a dietitian would be helpful for many individuals.
Good question Jan but unfortunately, the government makes the determination on what the foodstamps can be spent on.
In my opinion, with the state of childhood obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure becoming more rampant, it is not in the best interests of the recipient to spend their foodstamps on fast foods.
What is worse, again in my opinion, is that it is actually cheaper to buy sodas, processed foods and candies than it is to purchase milk and healthy foods. So when faced with trying to make those foodstamps stretch as far as they can, most will buy the sodas, candies and processed foods....
Here in the US, the foodstamp assistance program was designed to help families in need (or others) and is supposed to be used to purchase healthy food items but it progressed into buying some ready-made foods, such as frozen dinners, sodas, candies, etc.
It's a tough choice to determine what can and cannot be purchased with foodstamps and so many do not have the ability to cook meals on a regular basis or do not know how; sometimes the parents work so much that it is easier to purchase processed foods and feed their families. Unfortunately, there are some that do take advantage of the program and that hurts those families and individuals that really do need the help.
I think that religion is and was devised by mankind to explain that which he/she cannot explain satisfactorily to themselves and do not wish to understand that which goes on around them.
Religions that I have studied have all intertwined their stories and force one to believe and never question, become "faithful." Men and women wrote the stories of the various religious works and each work has been edited over and over again. To "believe" or have "faith" is in my opinion, asking me to let go of my personal identity and become a "sheeple." One who blindly follows. Not to my liking.
