RE: What will most help prevent poverty and homelessness.

our programs don't support this theory - actually put someone in housing and you will find most folks rise to met the challenge.

Now if you are talking about those chronic individuals that have been on the streets for more than a year, or for 4 episodes over t3 years, then more support is provided then just housing - mental health treatment, removing the barriers that prevent them from being employed (documentation, credit history or criminal history, history of victimization) ....

Like I previously posted there is not a quick fix, an easy answer, or one solution.

RE: Charlie Hebdo

While these examples are good to suggest that not just the muslim religion that has done bad things.

I just don't agree with an argument with the premise "that other religious folks do bad too, so the specific religious folks doing bad is ok. One has nothing to do with the other in so far as we are not talking about all religions currently in the world today kill those that do not believe in their faith.

The difference between the Western way is that it is a secular way, not a religious way. Meaning the government makes up the rules and laws. In the Muslim religion, countries governments are not the ones to make up the laws and rules, it is by the Qur'an and the dictates of the spiritual leaders to make those laws and carry out the punishment for transgression of breaking those laws.

This is the fundamental difference in understanding this.

Lucky you, others have not been so lucky and lost their life by the fanatics of their faith

RE: help me score.

I forgot - the best thing, that I enjoyed was the actual CS get-togethers

RE: help me score.

writing As a semi-veteran of the CS International Forum community below is my advice.

1. Decide what kind of a game you are going to play here - "to score" as topic suggest some sort of team athletic activities, football, rugby, baseball, basketball.... dunno So perhaps changing the game to cooking a well prepared meal instead

- ending with the dessert of love and passion (marriage? soul mate? sometime date?) - it's your call
- the entree of email contacts of women in your area. However, read the profiles carefully first because it will say in it. You did the good thing and added your photo.

_ when you send an email, perhaps ask a question about something in the person's profile. If it reads in the profile - just here for the blogs, etc believe them and leave them alone.
- send out a lot of emails and flowers and realize that it takes time to get a response and more than likely you will not get a response.

Be like the rest of us CS vets, entertain yourself in the forums and blogs until you get those responses.

RE: Charlie Hebdo

So true and even in France - they have specific laws too on their freedom of speech.

So should one religion (in this case Muslims) now make the laws for Canada, France, USA, South Africa, Russia or any country instead of the elected or "dictated" government of that country?

RE: Is Bill Cosby guilty ?

Don't you think it is really an indicator of our time and age?

Anyone has access to so many varieties of media and knowledge (on how to do things).... so as we (humans) are telling our stories that reach more than just our immediate families or our doctors or priests (or other spiritual leader), it becomes a social issue and discussion. Of course privacy rights were greater before the new access to tweet, Facebook, talk shows, radio shows, blogs, interviews for blogs, gossip etc.

I think historically most of the "stars" had public relations agents who were very good at spinning the right story or hiding the wrong story on behalf of their clients. Journalists and gossip columnists and other media folk in earlier days knew that a story, depending on the star or the power behind the star to do for or against their own career.

Now, information is leaked in so many ways. People are speaking out in so many different ways electronically.

What's the Mille?

I do understand how "thankful" we are for Wall Street and the stinking politicians and evil corporations that suck the life blood out of the working people. hug

RE: Charlie Hebdo

Although to be fair - We are free to make our choices, however we are often not free of the consequences of those choices.

To write or publish in a country that allows this with specific rules should not end in loss of life.

RE: Charlie Hebdo

Yes, let's not rock the boat.

Let's just hide away, or cow down to religious fanatics that impose their view of the world.

What is the definition of insulting religious beliefs of other people? What is the definition of offending the other people?

Why does this religion get to define what is an insult and what is offending?

RE: What will most help prevent poverty and homelessness.

gosh and it's worked sooooooo well for Mexico hasn't it? tongue

RE: Hyper smarty thread

disagree and who are they?

RE: What will most help prevent poverty and homelessness.

You cannot PREVENT poverty or homelessness - you can only provide doors to open into self sufficiency and housing.

On any given day people lose their jobs, can't pay for housing, it is a continual up and down, cycle of human industry. Businesses go out of business, and as we have seen banks fail, or get bailouts, or an industry is no longer needed or is replaced with new technology, or just a poor business person. We have families that must support large number of children who need to be fed, clothed and educated to get ahead. We have people who can no longer work (elderly) who lost their pensions, or had it stolen.....

We are in the age of technology, the age of information. Does that mean we don't still have hunters and gatherers, farms and farmers, factories or factory workers? Yes, yes and yes. It is a continual effort for the individual to find their way in the work world - there are more than one way to be employed.

RE: What will most help prevent poverty and homelessness.

Having worked in the homeless arena for the last 13 years and in public service for 30 there is no simple answer, no simple solution, no quick fix.

It takes a lot of strategies and efforts in policy changes and implementation.

Separate poverty from homelessness first in tackling the issues.

Homelessness is any ordinary folk (really)

People who are living in a place not meant for human habitation, in emergency shelter, in transitional housing, or are exiting an institution where they temporarily resided. The only significant change from existing practice is that people will be considered homeless if they are exiting an institution where they resided for up to 90 days (it was previously 30 days), and were in shelter or a place not meant for human habitation immediately prior to entering that institution.
People who are losing their primary nighttime residence, which may include a motel or hotel or a doubled up situation, within 14 days and lack resources or support networks to remain in housing. HUD had previously allowed people who were being displaced within 7 days to be considered homeless. The proposed regulation also describes specific documentation requirements for this category.
Families with children or unaccompanied youth who are unstably housed and likely to continue in that state. This is a new category of homelessness, and it applies to families with children or unaccompanied youth who have not had a lease or ownership interest in a housing unit in the last 60 or more days, have had two or more moves in the last 60 days, and who are likely to continue to be unstably housed because of disability or multiple barriers to employment.
People who are fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, have no other residence, and lack the resources or support networks to obtain other permanent housing. This category is similar to the current practice regarding people who are fleeing domestic violence.

RE: Hyper smarty thread

Where's my "meditation" emoticon when I need one?

Read a little bit in More magazine - article entitled Voices Zeitgeist.

Careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) have been growing 3 times as fast as jobs in other fields. They are predicted to increase an additional 26% by 2020

Women are an untapped resource; they make up nearly half the country (America's) workforce yet hold less than a quarter of its STEM jobs.

So I say to those HR gurus those gatekeepers of rigid and biased opinions to those STEM jobs - "LET US IN!" frustrated

RE: Charlie Hebdo

Ali - in strongman's post - the video on what the Qur'an says indicate that this religion is intolerant of anyone else's beliefs and does not believe in equality for women. So how can Islam which preaches intolerance give lessons on peace and love - it appears not as a religion of peace and love?
