When hurricane Katrina blew through New Orleans, and the levies broke.... over 100 years of toxic dump from the industries upstream came crashing down on the French quarter and into the district area. 100 years of trash had spilled into the gulf - sat there and was pushed back into the city by the wet winds and rough sea -
over 100 years of that crap and like a backed up toilet.... turned New Orleans and lots of Louisiana into a sewage or septic wasteland.
The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam that spans the Yangtze River by the town of Sandouping, located in Yiling District, Yichang, Hubei province, China. The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest power station in terms of installed capacity (22,500 MW). The dam is the second largest operating hydroelectric facility in terms of annual energy generation, generating 98.1 TWh in 2012 and 83.7 TWh in 2013, while the annual energy generation of the Itaipú Dam in Brazil and Paraguay was 98.3 TWh in 2012 and 98.6 TWh in 2013.
As well as producing electricity, the dam is intended to increase the Yangtze River's shipping capacity and reduce the potential for floods downstream by providing flood storage space. The Chinese government regards the project as a historic engineering, social and economic success, with the design of state-of-the-art large turbines, and a move toward limiting greenhouse gas emissions. However, the dam flooded archaeological and cultural sites and displaced some 1.3 million people, and is causing significant ecological changes, including an increased risk of landslides.[The dam has been a controversial topic both domestically and abroad.
It is also built on a major fault line..... any earthquake will ..... well....
Ireland has instituted policies that help the people to recycle and reuse and consider the environment.... but what's the point if in other places of the world, it is a toxic dump?
For example plastic bags.... not allowed in some European countries, or it cost the consumer money to use them or be fined to use them or just not available....
In Florida we have a large plastics industry - those plastic bags are everywhere! With no end in sight. So as much as the individual decides to not use them, bring their own canvas bags to store, recycle all their plastics, the State government is the only one to make policy to change the consumers and business behaviors and of course they are NOT going to institute policy to do this because it is big business our plastics business.
the very same reason I left Canada 30 years ago..... weather patterns are more predictable however, I remember a year in the 1970s when Edmonton, Alberta Canada had 40 days of 40 below - newspaper published a certificate to everyone living there.
I also remember days when tropical Florida experienced so many hurricanes in a row.... and times when no enough rain filled the reservoir - when the city was on water rations.... Some of it is just mother nature and some of it is mother nature fighting back.
and more simple than that, can we as individuals really do anything about it? No because it is governments, and corporations that can change and do something about it.
Like the guys who go to the Amazon forests and de-forest it while digging for gold - or the large freighters that dump toxic waste into our oceans - or the large industries that work at making profits not at adding safety structures so they don't pollute the air, land and water around their plants.....
did I tell ya, I donated my brain to the university science.... hopefully upon death... I know at this point most of my organs are pretty well used up.... so I donated something rather unused.....
of course I did lie to them when I answered the survey.... they were looking for normal brains......
It is rather disconcerting to receive a birthday card from them every year, tho guess they still want to celebrate that it is not time to come get it.
This case is over - the only cases coming up are the violent protesters who have and will continue to get arrested and the federal and the civil cases that will arise out of it.
Lesson learned - the police force must diversify - it should be made up of members of the general population..... but change comes slowly to the southern states.
As a state that just could not get the votes to pass for medical marijuana, I think it is a big mistake, purely on a tax revenue bases.
Colorado has regulated it seed to product. this has created a great tax base - the folks from Colorado should be covered for all kinds of education, health and social programs.
It has created a tremendous amount of jobs!
Now Florida, which has perfect growing weather won't even be able to grow it and sell it - well Florida has always voted on the stupid side.
I personally don't use, so I really don't have an agenda to forward.
