Thoroughbred

I was a girl when I met your kind.
Yours was my first scent of refined,
Cultured class.
Leather and lather.
I am in love with you and your brothers,
The way you strut and prance.
Head high, alert eyes.

Yes, I still look for that confident
Bounce in the stride of your
Working-class cousins.
The flag of majestic strength,
Regal boldness.
Fearlessness.
The walk of a winner.

HAWK.....

As a leaf floats, your outstretch wings
Pure beauty of nature, a heart sings
On currents of air, hover and glide
Visually -effortless, may you ride

Over the hills and valley of life
Sighting of peace, never strife
Freedom to view, heaven to earth
To end of time, from nature's birth

Mesmerized I stand, drink in the scene
Watched before, so know it's no dream
Spectacle of nature, true spiritual gift
Over fields-by ways, may you always drift

Reminding us, of the simple things
That if we give time, birds on a wing
Can show us what living, is all about
Beauty surrounds us, all matters-counts.

About this poem:
as some know I live surrounded by acres of open crop growing land Hawks are not seen here as much as Northland and other rural areas, but even on the outskirts of NZ largest city, they are time stoppers.....

The Power Of Silence

If you listen when it's still all around
You will hear the very sound of silence
It's the basic sound that is the background
That allows other sounds their existence

Silence gives music its reality
It's the space between notes that is free
This allows them to resonate freely
And that creates a sense of harmony

Silence is not the absence of something
It's a thing in itself with great power
Skilfulness of it's placement in speaking
Is the hallmark of a great orator

It can express feeling with great effect
Better than words during some occasion
Like a silent minute to mark respect
For those who gave their lives for their nation

A deeper awareness of the divine
Can be sought in silent meditation
Silence helps to focus the restless mind
Engaged in spiritual devotion

Silence is a balm for the weary soul
Providing peacefulness and upliftment
It heals the worn spirit making it whole
And fills it with deep seated contentment

THE OCEAN AT NIGHT

Tranquility comes from star gazing amid sounds of the ocean
inescapable awe is certain to stir up a soulful emotion
Unforgettable defines spending an evening together ocean side
romance a moonlit evening sky is meant to provide

Choppy waves seemingly piggyback one another on way to shore
watching the Whitecaps glow under dark night never a bore
Crashing rhythm of the Sea crashing beach symbolic of relaxing song
more than one claimed it's healing when things are going wrong

The glisten atop the still Gulf waters never loses it's visual appeal
on clear nights Natures illuminated sky can make heaven seem real
Cool white sand cradles your back as you stare up at vast starry sky
all of a sudden out of nowhere a lone shooting star streaks by

When a breeze is present your nose gets a taste of ocean smell
you may even picture this being a place you'd love to dwell
The silence that envelopes the dark deep Ocean can be haunting
knowing deadly prey lurk beneath the dark waters a bit daunting

'The Ocean at Night' seems to surface thoughts of the spiritual kind
a faint whisper from Nature saying one day I'll free your mind
Beaches adjacent to every oceans edge are the Universes creation
keeping them all free from ruin a must... not just expectation

"Slipstream"

He shone his strength of light
with weary feet he stole the night

To hasten to ones call

howls of beauty throughout the dawn
captured, to her radiant scorn

Of pity and sadness
she had broke her silence

To bloom among the dunes
to shelter, held within the caves

No tidal seas bring my love

what love calls out and yet enslaved

My naked feet came home to dance
washing tides a caressing chance

When silence veiled
I halted for only a moment

of scardeness within me

Cruel times were just lent

What was I seeking
where does this soul of mine

destine me

or does it at all?

Falling rain
a cleansing quiver

washing nothing
yet streams of shiver

My eyes so misted
but colors so full

My heart pumped out
grasping breath

No penny the toll

Looking into the wake

I then saw my soul

Shadows and Light

The cold winds sweep through the gate,
tossing the autumn leaves about the garden place,
where the birds would frolic and sing.

Patches of the once green lawn, peering through here and there...
wait patiently for the warm winds to come forth,
and all of the life they will bring.

The Pine has grown little since I planted it last Fall,
casting a small shadow upon the trickling stream...
that slinks so slowly down the wall.

The light of day pauses one more moment,
before sinking into the night sky...
leaving an even balance of shadow and light,
bringing deep calm to the soul,
a pensive thought,
and a tear to the eye.

NATURE II

Coffee in hand I glance out to a mesmerizing glisten atop morning dew
St. Augustine turns picturesque as Cardinals and Jays parade their Red and Blue
Violent Thunder and Lightning nightly has made restful sleep impossible to attain
venturing outside not an option due to the influx of Mosquitoes from all the rain

A 'Low' in the southern Gulf looks to be creeping towards the coastal shore
now it's Tropical Storm Cindy bound to further saturate ground not needing more
Occasional nasty incessant weather a disappointment vacationers learn to shake
the worlds Whitest Beaches will soon beam down all the Sun you can take

Beach functions and the refreshing Gulf waters local folks missed out on too
condition's negated outside fun but great dining and dancing got people through
On the brighter side Sunless sky has provided a break from oppressive heat
all the beautiful Nature that envelopes N.W. Florida is pretty hard to beat

Astronomy

As the moon Breaks through the cloudy skys,
bringing ghostly shapes around our eyes,
as the warmth of this summer nights breeze
rustles gently through the trees.

Through scattered clouds the heavens shimmer
as numerous diamonds begin to glimmer.
A garment of lace stretched from shore to shore,
a map of the heaven that we begin to explore.

A telescope sat upon the deck,
scans the heavens charting every speck.
Constalations seen passed Orions belt
looking to where only gods have dwelt.

Then gazing upon Saturns rings,
oh what wonders this contraption brings.
As with the lens that we gaze through,
an arrangement of mirrors give us a perfect view.

And as the sun begins to rise,
we lose the darkness before our eye.
And wait again for another day,
to once more see this grand display
