NORTHERN GODDESS

The diggers dug deep
Into the heap
That was once upon a time
An opencast
coal mine.

Pathways carved around
Two large mounds
And curved around the middle
It was a fiddle.

The sculpture now seen
of the
Northern
Earth women

A beautiful concept
To hide
The ugliness
Of open coal
Blasting

About this poem:
You can google Northumberlandia as she is called she can be seen from up high.

I have walked up her and at the very top viewing point some open cast mining could still be seen on the other side. The contrast of what was, and what is just took my breath away.

HOVERING HALO>

Fading white, peaceful sky at night
Backdrop blue, for baubles bright
Eerie the moon, crystal white
Waiting stars, to complete sight

Halo of light, hovers in flight
Glow a warning, fantasy kite
Lanterns guide, lost souls home
Mesmerize- trap, no longer roam

Silver stars, can't twinkle alone
Reflective host, darkened dome
Night galaxy, leading the way
Beautiful herald, followed by day

the last job

"when I buried hate
and then forgave
a poem grew
around the grave"

The old man appeared surly, because he WAS surly. He spent the latter part of the day as he had it's commencement, trying to fit in.

Wilbur was a town much like any other. It had once been a destination. Now it was a way to another way. Viewed from an elevated pass, it was not unlike a medical sketch of the human heart. An arterial way in, a mixing chamber .. and a road out. As with any heart, women were found there. But that's another story.

The man studied the faces of the men who drank with him. A shot glass was swallowed by his hand before his throat made sure. Cigar smoke hung heavy, and a card game pitched and rolled around the workings of his ear. All his work was done a town ago. The spoils lay in a bag by his feet under the table. Every now and then, when it took his fancy to do so, he felt down for his holster. It was a cold day in a God forsaken town, but the still warm barrel bestowed a peace on him.

The old man had wounds. The kind only whiskey could cauterise. His scars visible only to the workings of his mind. He was the second to the last one born, toiling for food on his daddy's farm, scratching an existence from dust and hopelessness.

A blacksmith will impart wisdom to a man, if you are fortunate enough to know one of even temper. Metal is very much like character. Some wilt in the furnace of tribulation, some are made stronger. Some, it turns out, are even remade by terrible pain.

The old man's story would be told in the newspapers and wanted signs. In the throats of story tellers and in the cautionary sermons of learned men. But the true nature of his business was between him and his father. He didn't rob that bank and kill those men to take something. He was giving something away.

His name.

THE TURTLE

Driving along the road yesterday
Up ahead were flashing hazard lights
I slowed down on approaching the fray
Until I could get in full sight

Wondering if something bad was ahead
One man was getting out of his car
I approached cautiously with much dread
He was staring at the hot blacktop tar

I too looked to see what was there
And started to laugh at the sight that I saw
Trudging down the road without a care
I watched this huge turtle in awe

He kept walking with determination
Not to let anything stop him
From reaching his final destination
Did he know his chances were very grim

I drove on praying in my heart
That God’s creature would be safe in his travels
Wishing that we humans were that smart
To trust God when our life starts to unravel

Knowing that He is watching over us
And He will help us to get where we are going
Without all the fuss and muss
But with complete faith and knowing

Yesterday driving home this really happened. Wish you could have seen him/her and if a turtle can have a determined ignoring concentrating look on its face - that turtle did! lol

The sunset

The core
of orange
falling down
through open
branches
of green
embracing
the sunset.

My Vacation

Flew out of Madison, Wisconsin on July 25
We flew to Denver, Colorado and then onto Arcata, California
Then the pilot came over the intercom and said it was too foggy
We had to fly to another airport nearby that was about 100 miles inland
We refueled there and tried again for Arcata and then flew to San Francisco
We got put up for free in a motel and given 30 dollars in free food vouchers
Then it was on the shuttle bus back to the airport to try again for Arcata
I got on the wrong plane and was taken off of it
Luckily the person who took me off put me on the right plane
This time we made it to Arcata and I got my first rental car
Then as I was beat from lack of sleep, sore legs from being on a plane five hours
The night before, and the frustration of it all, all I wanted was to lay on a bed
So, from 3 pm till I went to sleep I just watched TV
So the next day, Saturday I went out and looked at trees going north on 101
This highway will take you all along the Redwoods parks
I went to two trees you can drive thru the next day
Then I went to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco on Monday
I barely made it back over as the directions in that city were awful coming back
I spent the next two days swimming in the ocean, going to Oregon
And going to a Bigfoot museum in Willow Creek, California
I flew back on Thursday, August 1 with no problems
Total cost of the trip was around 3,500 dollars

About this poem:
I have been wanting to go to California all my life. Most of my trips as a child were to Arkansas where I went to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis only once. Then it was fishing in Hayward or Gordon, Wisconsin.

LIGHT

lightbulb
light
the key
to what is
labelled as truth
illuminating
darkness of ignorance
revealing clearly what is
amidst all doubt and confusion
the magnificent power of light

ACROSTIC AUTUMN

A-Autumn is saying goodbye to hot sunny sun

U-underneath a cold blast stands ready to come

T-thanks are due for this years weather

U-unbridled a beautiful time we had together

M-mother earth has blessed us this year

N-now to hold the memory dear

Global Nonsense

Ten thousand years ago trapped in the ice
Tiny bubbles of air frozen don't move
Slow moving mountains of ice cut and slice
Scoring bedrock with many a deep groove

Great whales ruled the oceans of ages past
Woolly Mammoths thundered over the plains
Where primitive man during this time massed
Huddled in caves learns how fire maintains

The ice is almost gone as glaciers melt
And the last of the great bears appear doomed
How the little creature called man is knelt
Hovels while the dying embers consume

Our progression is not measured in time
For what we do to our earth is a crime

Beauty never touching the ground

Sun shining bright
Life feels alright
Leaves all green
Flowers in bloom
Colors bursting
Birds chirping away,
Hummingbirds dancing around
Making musical sounds
Butterflies floating in the sky
Leaving their dust behind
Bees buzzing around
Wings never touching the ground
Not a day to frown
Happy to look around
Such beauty never touching the ground.
