Lightning

The lightning cleft the sky apart
turning momentarily night to day.
Enormous forks cleaving the heavens
whilst sheets scatter the clouds.

Uprooting trees as it strikes and
setting some on fire to blaze away.
While animals and birds cower
tucked away in their little havens.

Crashing thunder rings out as
clouds clash one against another.
Furiously they heavens fight this night,
one could believe the old gods are warring.

Bellowing down their collective furies
with rain hitting hard as hail stones.
Right overhead the noise most deafening
as nature shows again her awesome power.

Slowly so slowly the lightning fades
and the rains lessen in their intensity.
The clouds start to part as stars appear
and the moon regally sails through clear skies.

Peace now returns to earth and heavens,
yet the scars are plainly left behind.
A reminder not to take nature lightly
or else you may suffer her awesome fury.

Savannah Night

There was an uneasy feeling that night on the savannah.
The creatures were jumpy as they huddled and grazed.
Startling at each new sound, one stamps its foot and
the vast herd flees, from what they are unsure.

The lions creep through the long grass setting an ambush.
The first pair's job to spook the herd now is done.
The rest spread out, now taking up the deadly hunt.
Working quickly they target one and separate it.

One lioness jumps on its back then slips off and is trampled.
Another tackling it face on is gored in the shoulder.
But the rest soon have it cornered and it is soon smothered.
As it dies the pride are already ripping open its belly.

The blood covers the land red as it seeps into the soil
There will be feasting tonight as the lions gather to eat.
Snarling as they rip into the warm carcass, blows lashing out,
As they vie for position, pushing and shoving each other.

The hunt was long and hard, the fruits came at high price.
Two lioness wounded, one will die. Such is the cost of success.
A calf bawls for its mother, yet she cannot answer its call.
Sadly it is too young to live, it will end up a tasty morsel.

Sated the lions rest in the early sunlight as cubs play.
Life for now on the savannah continues, and peace reigns.

Once Upon A SIlent night

There is a silence in the night heard only by my soul,
And the snow falls gently,in large soft flakes , upon the earth.
There is a crisp, clear vision of driveway, lantern lights casting
brightness on the snowy yard they are as Christmas lights without
The color , white as th e snow they reflect'
one could hear a pin drop on the snow as it piles waist high.
A nut burried in Fall has brought a squrriel near,
digging his way to the hidden food beneath the snow.
The trees, as bare as baby, stand motionless, their
Stick arms piercing the cold air, reaching for the slightest feel
of any rising heat.
Then a slight whistle, a slight wind
Breaking the stillness.
And large snowflakes carress the earth at snail speed.

The Pagan Mister

on lammas-eve, a witch of the dust
stands before lugh with her breast bared
against his twilight (which beckons august).

silver third eye blinking up towards the moon-
sliver of smile, summer soir goddess
brighter than a bonfire at midnight noon

solitary, naked in the wind, magician sister
lays out on a star as the sky beckons its own
(and awaits her sorcerer mister.....)

earthen bed where he slips inside
daughter of earth (a testament to nature's cycle)
and is resurrected after he died.

Sunset

Twilight
A flaming sky
Quenched
By evening’s
Rising mist,
The golden veil
Dew drops
On fields of corn,
Swarming waves
And shrilling cries
The flutter of wings,
Birds circling
Beech and chestnut trees
Perching
For the night.

forest

Hot sun
Sky blackened smoke
Rising
Heat and flame

Wall of heat heading this way
Smoke and heat
Fires rage gathers pace wind fans the orange flame
Gathers speed

Houses hidden within forest deep
Green and tranquial
Heat gathers wind fans the flame
Forest torch ed

The forest burn

Void

Once a month,
the reminder of emptiness
so that you are tuned
to your body’s harp strings,
strung out on the harpsichord
of all your nerves
& hammered bloody blue
as the crushed fingers
of the pianist
beaten by her jealous lover.

Who was she?
Someone I invented
for this poem,
someone I imagined….

Never mind,
she is me, you-

tied to that body
fainting on the rack of blood,
moving to the metronome-
empty, empty, empty,

no use.
The blood is thicker
than the roots of trees,
more persistent than my poetry,
more baroque than her bruised music.
It gilds the sky above the Virgin’s head.
It turns the lilies white.

Try to run:
the blood still follows you.
Swear off children,
seek a quiet room
to practice your preludes & fugues.
Under the piano,
the blood accumulates;
eventually it floats you both away.

Give in.
Babies cry & music is your life.
Darling, you were born to bleed
or rock.
& the heart breaks
either way

Autumn Soliloquy

Embedded image from another site

Autumn dances of playful colors bend and spread
As the blustery winds blow through my head
Royal transformations of rich hues in many shades
Precious awe filled moments in time before it fades

The season of my birth brings such joy to heart
The oaks, maples and sumacs become my escort
As mistress moon begins to out distance eternal sun
In secret depth of night for me love has begun

Days that seemed to linger in summer’s warmth
Now shorten patiently awaiting winters long bath
Before the chill of cold white snow begins to appear
Playful Autumn days become lively, crisp and clear

Our loving Mother Earth will put her children to sleep
While the Autumn son gently persuades slumber deep
Told through the stories that teach wisdom traditions
Separating night and day in colorful definitions

Legend of the Bear, and maiden corn goddess
Tell of spilled blood reds upon green and yellows
Whisper soft comforting breaths of final hushed solace
Sweetly filling the air like sounds played upon cellos

Ancient mystical folklore tells Autumn’s story of change
Star in Libra signifying balance ‘twixt light and darkness
Sharing a harvest of love’s tender feelings to arrange
A recital of beautiful colors before an undressed caress

Autumn season beguiles us into these pure mystical places
Trees shed their clothing standing as naked tall timber
While arms of falling colors reach down with long embraces
Heralding long nights of loving making warm and tender
