I reckon that only when a person is 100% OK with being on their own that they really ought not get involved with another ... because doing so will probably only lessen the degree of OK ness that the other enjoys.
Say Person A is 100% OK and they meet person B who is only 60% OK ... it's more than likely that A's OKness will fall, by 40%, it's a matter of 'gravity' if you like, easier to be dragged down than to pull up another perhaps?
Say Person C meets Person D ... both are only 50% OK with themselves 50 - 50 = 0 OK-ness
Look around, y'all probably have seen relationships like that .... maybe even you were in one hoping to pul, or be pulled up by the other person ?
Can't say as I did much 'advise' my kids as they grew up ... more we'd have a conversation about whatever course of action they were contemplating and what the likely outcomes might be for each of the options and indeed if other options might exist to achieve same or better outcome.
They're adults now and we use the same process - as an example with new technology items ... I'll have a look about and do my own research form an opinion and ring one or t'other to ask "What do you know / have you heard about xyz any good..." If they were very firm that one brand or other had an horrendous rep I'd keep that in mind and avoid !
I suppose the exception would be technical matters where there's a process ... elder rang this week when a piece of machinery wouldn't start, but I dunno if that would count as 'advice' when really it's a step by step instruction to find a fault?

If an individual suffers a mental breakdown / particularly a psychotic break then they tie his hands to the Best Runner in the village and the BR is charged with literally running the Patient into the ground, ie until they literally cannot take another step further after which they share some food and then walk back to the village.
There's a number of 'western theories' (such as the experience deters future breaks on the grounds that it was a 'hard' experience) but the locals don;t bother so much with explanations, it's been working for hundreds of years so they just do it!
Interesting though that when a person has PB they tend to want to run ... and in the west there;s a tendency by authorities to STOP them from running (inconvenient) and of course the 'identity and attire of those who stop becomes 'one more thing in the bundle of things they fear ... and want to run from !'

There's not a Law Enforcement Agency in the world that 'trains its people' to charge in single handed against automatic weapons.
