sea of keels

heaven knows
and heaven tries
unpick the wrongs you've done
unpick the lies

cos you don't know
how it feels
trudging through a day
in a sea of Atlantic keels

if I had an aeroplane
if I had things
Id fly to the Arctic
just to cool my wings

I'd go to your house
just for the day
and I build me hammock
in your hair and sway..

If I had an aeroplane

well heaven knows
and heaven lies
there's an undiscovered
shade of brown
in your Hazel eyes

but you don't know
how that goes
how the earth.. changes pitch
when it feels your toes

If I had an aeroplane
if I had wings
Id fly past every weaknesses
to a place of Kings

I'd fly down to Mexico
just to surf the truth
and my board would be the promises
that I made in youth

but my boat is older
and my dreams ain't new
so I dive in the bitter swell
and I dream of you

MIRRORS TO THE SOUL

For some looking way down in
Seeing evil lurking deep
Tempting the soul to sin
Knowing what will reap

Others showing kindness
Unconditional acceptance and love
Eyes shining with brightness
A reflection from God above

cars and girls

the cafe was closing
and the air was darker
than age
Mary was fixing
her order
and her world
had become
like a cage

will you still see me
on Sunday?
will you wear that dress
and look nice..?
but you know
that a question
ain't a question
when you
got to ask it twice..

and the sparrows
still play
in the cornfields
where we used
to make love
and you'd sing..

ain't it funny
how something
is nothing
when nothing
was once everything?

I drove down there
around midnight
past farms
that seemed
to be free

but I knew
one day
that I'd buy one
and that
would be the end
of me

talk of music
and college
of dance halls
lawyers and gown
but it's hard
to dance with a roughneck
when a banker's hand
owns town

she was getting tired
of me
my work, my car
and my dark
and I looked to the heavens
for answers
and saw nothing but stars
and a lark

"I heard she married a doctor"
my friend Dave
did say
later on

and I smiled
like it meant
nothing to me
and got sick
when I knew
he was gone

now the sparrows still sing
in the cornfields
neath the mountains
where she
used to sing

aint it funny
how something
is nothing
when nothing
was once everything

and her car, her car
is a dream.

COVID'S CALL

A year ago all was well
now it feels just like hell
if we sneeze were asked to leave
wear a mask or don't come back
media spreads the fear so fast
we take hope it wont last
young or old, rich or poor
covid knocks at your door
Jesus says trust in Him
If we do things arent so glim
ten thousand years and we'll look back
we won't remember it so black
say your prayers and Golden rule
keep the kids home from school
Don't lose hope,trust in God
this too shall pass, either side the sod.

About this poem:
I wrote this in about 15 mins, the past years' experiences seemed to just draw it out of me. I hope others like it and are not offended by the spiritual aspect of it,I draw comfort, inspiration, strength, peace of mind and guidance from the Lord....... if just one person is made to feel a bit better by it then I'm happy.

Uplifting Moments....

Fragile as eyelashes, greenery of ferns
Movement on breeze, leads all to learn
Of nature's strength, lace-like-green
Daintiness-beauty, in daily life seen

Beauty surrounds us, if you just look
As words form a sentence, within a book
All are able, to store for later date
Magical-surreal, as high fashion plate

Variety of beauty, in life and thought
So much is given, without being bought
Nature's abundance, to artistic eyes
Look closer every moment, at earth-sky

Criss-crossing-branches, reaching clouds
Whispers that shimmer, gentle not loud
Uplifting moments, in a forestry scene
Hidden in undergrowth, is peace supreme

Adventure travels, ahead on the wind
Emotions throughout ages, some may sing
No eerie echo, wanders spiritually-alone
Sense of belonging, engulfs forestry home

I RISE

You can write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
trying to stamp me to the dirt
Still,
like fire,
I rise.

Just like moon and sun,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes high springing
I Still,
like fire,
Arise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders fall like tea-er-drops,
Always,
like fire,
I'll rise.

You can stab me with your words
cut me with your eyes,
Try kill me with your hatefulness,
I shall,
like fire,
Still rise.

Does my truthfulness upset you?
should I be despised?
I'll dance like i'm a diamond
Forever
like fire
I rise

Poppy

Poppy's lined in rows
Thier petals flutter in the light winds
they flutter in the silent breeze Thier red petals glow
Remember them the fallen now remember them
Lives given the pals the friends the sons taken away now the fallen
Souls now in heaven
The guns the bombs now silenced we remember them

the perfect woman

say it in a sequence
of silent lullabies
say it in the echoed
phrases of goodbye

say it a way
that one day makes me care
say it so I kayak
through the rapids of your hair

say it without speaking
without thought or conscious guile
say it in a fraction
of the whole that makes you smile

say it loud in quiet halls
without worry or concern
say it in a foreign tongue
the one I'd never learn

say it by the way you walk
by the way your hips block light
say it by a waking kiss
in the middle of the night

say it as a tidal surge
impossible to curb
say it by actions only..
we both know love's a verb

The Silent LandlineTelephone

Should I drop U a note
naturally again l am eating alone
waiting on a bowl of gumbo.
Ur a no-show
likely doing the three famous maestros
Larry, Curly and I hope
U choke
on Moe.
I'm sorry but feeling pretty low
losing my Piedmont pillow.
I remember U long ago
U tried to corner the market playing the blues on a banjo
Made sense nobody knows
Maybe since lock in cellar sits a dusty jazz piano
Then Lock jaw denied U fame and fortune blowing the piccolo
always known for Ur solos
this was before wearing out Ur welcome on the cello,
Started as a joke
writings odes
to The Twilight Zone
staring the fallen saint, Billie Joe
who had an episode
when she lost her halo
when rain turned to snow
It slipped from her dome
while dipping her bent toe
into the dark cosmos
but caught the eye of fire breathing hippo
in mid-pounce on a giant translucent minnow
So the story goes
like a Viking's fine paid thru the nose.
Plunging halo
now traveling at speed of light heads for ground zero
was caught on film in slow mo
oddly snatched up by a swooping sparrow,
but dropped like a dirty ho
on seeing a dancing scarecrow
doing the tango
with a Hispanic gringo.
Never scare off any crows
Each of them having a mind of their own
Scavengers are at home
grilling up some squirming lizard toads.
on the sun baked roads,
like on US 95 thru Mosco
not in Russia but Idaho
and yet the halo continued to roll
for years through God only knows
til it finally landed in Chicago
on the Antiques Roadshow
shown off by an old crone
or St Joe incognito
with big nose
who lived alone
making a cameo
drooled over its host
a fat sweaty fellow
who smelled like pork roast
sampled his ear lobe
on toast
out doing Van Gogh
Anyway my hat off to poor bloke,
with necklace yoke
now a foot off the flo,
at end of his rope,
swinging low
to tune of Desperado
fading in and out on solid state radio.
Once again The Silent Landline Telephone
takes another mofo.
dreams he gives up the ghost
but wakes up surfing down an ice flow
in hills of Glasgow
tripping too much Gingko
staring past where horizon aglow
but alas seeing nothing that doesnt show

The Old October Sky

Sitting still under a crimson tree
Casting my eyes over the great marsh
Now wrapped in a shrouded mist
Out past some long river’s mouth
Where large clusters of black clouds
Go racing by perpetually fast
And under the old October sky
The dusk and frost await their freedom
From the vanishing summer sun
