RE: Is Beer good for you ?

Beer just makes me burp and need the toilet... I don't like it. Red wine however makes me smart, pretty, and strong!

RE: Dreams

There is a school of thought Mano, that dreams in black and white are a sign of depression.

I said in a previous post that I'd suffered from nightmares since I was a child and FOS rightly commented that nightmares are often an indication of a troubled mind.

I agree with this, and I have had nightmares where I can pinpoint exactly why I've had them.

My doubts with a blanket theory like this are because my childhood was perfect, really, I had no angst whatsoever when I was growing up, yet my nightmares have continued throughout adulthood regardless as to whether I have any worries.

I have a feeling my family doctor was right when my mum took me along when I was around 8 years old!

RE: Nationalism and Pride in ones country.

See, we can be civilised!

Now I'm going to say goodnight to everybody,

I'm going to watch a programme about the results of the Russian elections yesterday and another programme, cara a cara (face to face) between Zapatero and Rajoy in preparation for the Spanish elections on 9th March.

Sorry detente, off topic you may think, but relevant in some ways IMO.

RE: Nationalism and Pride in ones country.

Al's 'proclamation' is something i agree with

But again it doesnt answer the op.[/quot

It doesn't answer the OP directly but it is still relevant, as a few people on this thread have noted. It's good to bring in another perspective to think about don't you think?

RE: Nationalism and Pride in ones country.

We just think too deeply Al!

laugh handshake

RE: Soulful talk : catch-up times **

Hmmm I agree. I don't think I'm spiritual at all, I live from day to day dealing with my 'real' life and work. Having said that I still feel at peace with myself without making any concerted effort to do so.

Perhaps it's just that I know when to relax and as far as possible divide my work and leisure time equally?

RE: Nationalism and Pride in ones country.

Phew, thank you jb. thumbs up

RE: Nationalism and Pride in ones country.

Ok Al and I were mistaken, we both misunderstood what you were attempting to say, pass your comments (with grin) to Al too please.

grin

RE: Nationalism and Pride in ones country.

It makes perfect sense to me! Read Al's post, I think he was saying that we shouldn't be so insular and think more about ourselves in the context of the whole world. Correct me if I'm wrong Al!

I'm English too by birth but I spend long periods in other countries and have chosen to make my permanent home in Spain. I have felt proud of many things in each of these countries as though I were a native.

Perhaps that's the difference between pride and nationalism?

RE: Nationalism and Pride in ones country.

Exactly! thumbs up

It's clear from some of the replies that many of us haven't attained this level of thinking, you are the only person who hasn't referred to your country of birth.

RE: What do CS members in general think about members who participate in the forums? They are...

Personally I log on when I'm bored and have nothing else to do. That's not being negative though, I think it's the healthiest option and I often enjoy the times I'm here. I'm no longer seeking a partner, though that was the intention when I joined just under three years ago.

Generally, I believe we have a mixed bag here which makes it more interesting doesn't it?

RE: how to french kiss

Well actually he does have a point!

Some men think a french kiss consists of repeated lunges of the tongue halfway down your throat, not nice or comfortable!

A very nice description of a french kiss IMO.laugh

RE: I am happy

(romanan free translation) laugh

You're right, it probably wouldn't travel well. I'm in Russia by the way, if I was in Spain I'd have a wonderful choice of wines and wouldn't be consumed with such envy!

Enjoy, and should our paths cross I would be delighted to share a glass or two with you.

RE: The Supermarket

Elley, we may leave with nothing, but we often return and buy from that first shop!

RE: I am happy

Send that bottle of merlot over here and I'll be even happier! All I have is a bottle of beer which I don't like very much.

beer thumbs down wine thumbs up

RE: Picture background

Phew, glad you clarified your last post, I was getting a bit worried there Kitty!

RE: Destiny and Us ..

Hi Flower, I don't know for sure, which was why I said ..."I don't think so...." Equally, your views are simply what you 'believe'. We just don't know. I'm not a spiritual person like you but I'm a good, kind person and that's that.

If, as you maintain, external factors can persuade us to stay on a path which leads to something awful happening, I just can't believe that it is some divine being/destiny however you may label it, intending us to suffer. Why?

It's life, with it's ups and downs nothing more IMHO.

RE: Why men dont smile

You may be right laugh

It must be difficult though to smile and flex or hold in the stomach at the same time?

Maybe bad teeth is the best explanation!

Actually the 'crazy' look is best recognised in the eyes.

RE: Why men dont smile

Perhaps some guys think it looks more manly to pose with a serious look on their face.....they do seem to like flexing their muscles a lot though! laugh

RE: Destiny and Us ..

Hi Riya,

No I don't think so. I believe that everything that happens to us is based on the decisions we make, right or wrong, and as I said earlier, external factors which we have no control over.

It's very easy to explain away wonderful or sad unexpected happenings in our life as being part of our destiny or fate.

For me it's an expression of speech that people have always used and in the end some begin to believe the literal meaning.

Because sometimes we make the wrong decisions...we are not infallible Riya!

Sometimes things are just beyond our control due to external factors.

RE: Why????

Ok I wasn't very clear.....hot = temperature, not what you thought!

RE: Why????

Nah, we do it because we're hot! Simple. laugh

RE: Drinking death - Who's to blame?

A few years ago i nearly moved to Teneriffe to escape the moron culture that is now rife here on the UK.When i saw what and how the Brits lived and behaved there at beach level i thought i better run to where the spanish lived further up the mountain at Adeje.

The climate was better, the people were nice it was completely different from the coast!! My conclusion was i would end up wanting to kill English tourists importing egg and chips and British beer when so close to Africa!!

I ask you, all that way to eat egg and chips on holiday and get drunk!! What a**hole!! They were too stupid to even order paella there!

You are so right! I live in Murcia city centre....no Brits except a handful of teachers perhaps, but in the summer I sometimes visit the coast and I loathe the 'Little Britain' enclaves I've found. Now I know where to go to avoid them and mix with the Spanish people as I do in my normal day to day life working in Murcia.

I've met Brits who have lived in Spain for 20 years and cannot speak a word of Spanish! But then why would they? They build their little communities and arrogantly expect their Spanish neighbours to understand them. If they don't understand they SHOUT as if their neighbours were deaf! It's like watching a sketch from Fawlty Towers sometimes....embarrassing!

RE: Drinking death - Who's to blame?

thumbs up

Good point jb. I live in Spain, when I'm not freezing to death working here in Russia! and in general people have a more sensible attitude to alcohol, young and old . Drinking is an acceptable part of the culture, but with food, whether it is a meal or just tapas, and kids don't usually see their parents staggering home drunk after a few hours in the pub like they often do in the UK.

I can remember the first job I had in Spain, I went to a bar with some other teachers and as I could speak a little Spanish at the time I was given the responsibility of ordering the drinks. I stood at the bar and ordered the drinks for everybody, while I was waiting for the rest of the drinks to be poured I was just about to take a sip of my glass of wine on the bar when an old Spanish man slapped me gently on the hand and pushed a plate of olives at me!

Sadly it's changing, even young Spanish people now are becoming binge drinkers, and you are right, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parent (s) to foster a respect for alcohol consumption.

RE: Drinking death - Who's to blame?

Do you mean over the legal limit for driving? How much did she drink to be 4 to 6 times over this limit?

I don't think anybody can be blamed really, nobody forced her to drink so much and her friends may well have been drinking the same amount but they were fortunate it didn't have such an adverse effect. Young people don't always understand the risks of binge drinking.

Bartenders too can't really be held responsible, if the bar is full and they are very busy, they can't be expected to monitor the alcohol consumption of each and every customer can they?

RE: What's the first thing you think of when I say '80s?

Shoulder pads. laugh

RE: When you've been Stood up.....Do you...

That thought crossed my mind too, or an accident.

If he called a few hours to confirm the date I would be a little worried, not angry....yet!

RE: I am a bad woman!

Uli you're a bad woman for EATING processed fish??? fingers!

If you must, grill them, you won't lose the batter. Better still, make your own with fresh fish and no additives or cereals.
