The Isolation Blog

A place for those of us in lockdown (currently Spain but coming to a place near you soon) to share what's happening or indeed what's not happening, have a winge, report on what's happening "outside" etc. It could also be used for updating who has supplies of toilet rolls in stock professor laugh

We didn't exactly take it seriously by the time China did confess and we weren't exactly moved until we saw what was happening in Italy. It takes a special kind of vain pig-ignorancy to ignore something that close to home.
Pat, that's dreadful, is anything being done about it dunno
I think down the track questions might be asked, it was eclipsed by the cruise ship fiasco, which the authorities are frantically trying to bury. They distracted the public by making a huge fuss about peoplle who spit at nurses or police... A disgusting act, which was already illegal anyway, but a very useful distraction politically.
Chesney, I think what ticks me off the most is the amount of taxpayer money that's obviously being wasted on spy networks and virus research, most countries run huge spy networks but none seem to have noticed China was hiding a pandemic capable of bring the world to it's knees, and after a hundred years of research the current situation is exactly the same as it was for Spanish flu in 1918, government measures are the same now as then and we all know how that worked out back then. Then there's the fact governments closed down research institutes looking for new drugs and left it to big pharma to come up with cures, what private corporation is going to produce a cure for anything when they can make billions treating symptoms. And finally we're told health services like the NHS practice for things like pandemics, knowing it's not if but when it happens, but nobody seems to have thought oh we're going to need protective equipment, we'd better keep a stock of that, they didn't seem to have it from day one.
Incompetence or sabotage?
For days now the press in the UK has been talking about the NHS running out of protection equipment, the health minister has told nurses to use other things to protect themselves very mad and the health union has threatened to strike and refuse to treat virus patients without it. Since last Friday the government has been saying a military jet is going to Turkey to collect more, it's been delayed for days.
Now we hear UK firms making this equipment is having to send it to other European countries as the government has ignored them very mad
IMO it won't be the government that's ignoring them but the civil service, they've always been useless again imo, but one has to ask is it incompetence on their part or a plot to make the government appear useless having lost their precious EU membership dunno It doesn't look pretty either way but one would lead to criminal charges.

Viv Chloroquine has been used for decades with minimal side effects. At the same time, there is a correct way to prescribe it, dosage wise, in use with other medication/vitamins etc. Doctors should be well read up before prescribing it. And it's not going to work on someone who's terminally ill or if used when it's too late and the virus has already done irreversible damage. Common sense dictates this.

Anecdotal evidence has been extremely positive thus far. Initial trialing was mostly very positive too. Now one report comes out, thin on detail, with a negative spin. I want to see more detail. Perhaps it's the natural cynic in me, but a cheap effective solution is a NIGHTMARE for the BIG WIGS in the pharmaceutical industry who live to develop and patent new and extremely expensive drugs/treatment to profit off of. It's their business model. But they also spend a tonne on lobbying and even are deeply involved in 'trials'. So it's absolutely right to be cynical. Money is the root of so much evil.
The isolation blog, is a bit boring. We have to do this, and are getting results. I think 70 odd have perished so far, compared to other countries its not too bad. But its not a competition, w're just trying to stay alive. Every one of those horrible numbers elsewhere, has people in terrible grief. And my heart goes out to them wherever they may be.
Pat, I think it was inevitable the "isolation" blog would get boring especially after the first month sigh but I think we've all done a pretty fair job of lifting spirits whilst at the same time looking at the facts on the ground.
I'm over the moon on your results thus far, along with India, Japan etc , whether that's down to weather, TB inoculation, management of the situation or some unknown factor remains to be seen, but you can tell some here aren't happy with the way it's been handled as property prices in neighboring Portugal have just jumped up by 12%, mainly due to demand from people living in Spain.
Pat, I'm totally with you on that sad flower
What have people been up to whilst isolated ect?
Merc, well on Wednesdays I go shopping......... and did I mention shopping confused oh and of course there's always shopping Wednesday dancing
Talking of isolation - not all see it is something that fits into their lifestyle needs and desires.

The hand sanitiser will be back on the shelves again before long.
In the meantime, it is easy to make your own homemade one. It works just as well and it's easy to make.
You are doing very well with the kids. It isn't easy, but you're doing well thumbs up
Thanks molly. They're really a blast - just a lot of work. laugh
Molly, we may well be in with the world leaders of being sick and dying but at least we have hand sanitiser and toilet rolls doh laugh
Merc, totally with you on soap, always used it rather than expensive sanitisers and no intention of changing now thumbs up
I am educated but let them think I'm a dummy thumbs up
This has to be pretty rare, woman in Spain, 107 years old, survives being infected with no only the current virus but Spanish flu in 1918 banana

Following the findings of many counties that smokers are less likely to catch the virus, France is now trialing nicotine patches as a preventative measure wow
I feel sorry for smokers trying to give up as there are fewer nicotine patches available than toilet rolls and look what happened to them doh hope there's not a cigarette shortage next uh oh

Z, maybe even more people would have died without it dunno

Of course soap works better than sanitisers, but when we are out and about, there is no access to soap and water. That's when hand sanitisers are used.
I never go anywhere without mine.
Molly, yes I can see it could be useful, but not here at the moment, as we can't be out and about the only time our hands could be contaminated is shopping, so most of us wear disposable gloves, I personally put them on before getting out of the car and take them off before getting back in, whilst in the shop I assume my hands are contaminated (in reality probably not) so don't touch my face, the supermarket does have sanitiser available free at the entrance along with more gloves.
Just how stupid can anyone be doh man arriving home from hospital after surviving virus is shot dead by well-wisher firing his gun in celebration doh

Most shops do here too, Z. But I like to be fully prepared myself either way.

As for that shooting, guns and idiots don't mix.
Zman

Load up on soap...lol...laugh

I hate hand sanitizers...years later...we will find out if they are worth while...your skin is the largest organ...wondering how toxic it is...just a thought...uh oh
No one likes mandatory flu shots...but we have to wear a mask if we don't...

This virus is potentially deadlier...so I would be willing to agree to the inoculation...working in a hospital...I want to.protect patients too...
Zman

Sometimes simple things are just more logical...vigorous hand washing is king...thinking back to the days of old...Ms. Nightingale stuff...wearing a mask is a good barrier to decrease droplet risk...that and a healthy lifestyle...
No brainers...it works...
wine
Zman thumbs up laugh
Lou, correct me if I'm wrong but I recall reading flu jabs have to be produced the previous year in order to have supplies available, they basically guess what strain of flu will affect each country next year and a bit like betting on horses, sometimes they win sometimes they don't dunno
Can you build a better mousetrap? laugh They brought home "Mousetrap" the game - for the girls. What a riot in putting it together. There are definitely times when it is advantageous to be grandma. I can sit back and just chuckle at them putting it together. It took some doing but they are playing the game now. We're all trying really hard to keep the kids entertained. On our front, the governor has extended our stay-at-home until the end of May.
Time to find more toilet paper laugh
Commenting to celebrate the wonderful fantastic news we will be allowed out for walks and exercise from early May! Not that I am passionately into walking, I'm not one of nature's pedestrians, but it is the first big crack in our draconian lockdown since mid March.

One - foot - in - front - of - the - other? Well, I'm sure it's like riding a bike, it will come back to me.

Masks must be worn. I hope banana masks will be accepted here too, they look fun and far more sensibly disposable than most. grin
