gooddogman: You have made some good points. Yes I do have a right to end a life. The reason is, If I fear for my life or to protect another from serious harm. It is written in our laws. As should be.

I wasn't able to get stay in the thread yesterday and just got back into it now to see what people wrote. I can't belive how some of you think.

What gives you the right to end a life? I'm sure you have a fascinating answer. I'd like to hear it.

somechick: I wouldn't had shot to kill him but I sure would've made darn sure that he wasn't about to just walk away.I would've shot him in the knee caps.

When you point a gun at someone, your intent is to kill them....not to hit them in the leg cause they can still come at you. People that carry guns have them "in case they need to kill someone". You think he would have stopped shooting him in the kneecaps. confused

zee1ander: If you are ever put in that position again... god forbid.... never shoot for a small target... you will miss... always shoot for the torso... much easier to hit.

I read this post after my post about shooting to kill. Seems as this man made my point.

toranoga: Deaths by vehicles are roughly equal to deaths by guns, so should we outlaw motor vehicles because they maim and kill?

toranoga: So what you are proposing is that we overturn the 2nd ammendment to the constitution.
As for the refrence to vehicles, I was merely attempting to come up with something to draw a correlation to. That being said, I was trying to wrap my brain around the logic of picking one over the other when in fact the number of deaths caused by each is roughly equal.
To take it a step farther, is it correct to assume that you would be opposed to anything whose original purpose was to maim and kill?

Absolutely !!! Withe exception of law enforcement and the military.

So if some lunatic is coming at your kids (or grandkids) with a butcher knife, you'd just let him have at it because intervention is wrong?

Screw that...if a life is going to be lost, I'd like the option of choosing. And it wouldn't be my family. wink

vonney: I havent said I want anything other than to understand why ppl feel they have the right to carry guns? At no point do I pretend to understand the legistration in the US, I am simply asking as someone who has been reared with the knowledge that guns are to maim and kill. Please understand that I live in a Country where it is illegal to carry a gun and I just dont understand why anyone would want to.

It empowers them Vonney. They think no one will bother them if they carry a gun. Well, in truth, it's just the opposite. When it is known that there is a gun in the house, that makes the house a target for robbery. Unless you sleep in a chair with the gun in your hand, they don't have a chance to stop the thief. To use the thought that I am being protected by civilians who carry guns is nonsense.

I live in a high drug area. I am 66 years old. I've never been attacked or robbed. My police force protects me, not gunslingers.

What gives me the right? The fact that another is trying to end mine. Even the bible says an eye for an eye. If someone tries to do you, you have the right to do them

Snuggs09: Tyranny doesn't exist in America. Do you think it's because you carry guns. Get real. Some of you said you would march on Washington with your weapons, head into the Capitol with guns blazing. This is not 1800. It is 2009.

I dare say you don't like they way Washington is running things now. Isn't it a form of tyranny when the President says "this is the way it is". Isn't he now dictating what is going to happen to your money. What's stopping you from heading down Rte. 95 and putting the President and Congressman in their place. You say violence is the answer to violence.

Violence is a last resort, but without the weapons, that last resort dosnt exist

Dreamer82: I don't think guns are the problem. It all depends on who is in posession of that gun, and what they plan to do with it. A gun in the hands of a well intentioned person could be a good thing. If your life were in danger, I would think you'd want a responsable gun owner to intervine. It comed down to the criminals, or the citizens.

I remember watching a documentary once. A S.W.A.T. team member said that sometimes you have to take a life to save one. We should all take a step back, and really consider that statement. That said, I fully support the second amendent. Besides, if you didn't have a gun, you'd just have to find another way to kill someone who is trying to kill you.

You make reference to S.W.A.T. They are law enforcement. Their job is to keep you safe. It is not YOUR job to keep civilians safe.

I said in my other post that I would've shot him in the kneecaps. If I'd shot him in the knee caps I can quarantee you he wouldn't been able to just walk away. Then if he would've out of the grace of god found a way to get up I'd blown his head off.

I guess I was darn lucky huh cause when he pulled the Thumb gun out from behind him and looked at me and just walked a way.

I was also living in Southern California and if my memory serves me correctly you can shoot someone if they enter your home without permission and threaten to harm you.

I have a gun and wouldn't hesitate to use it if I had to.
