L O O K

For in the distant i
see a tree as bare
as bare could be.
Not a leaf anymore to
be blown off in the
breeze.
Fall is here now and
winter is on it's way
to make it cold each
and every day.
To lay down the thin
layer of lace to
brighten the winter days.
To show the beauty of
God and what he has
to show you.
To show God's
magnificent power
in what is today.

Autumn Song

October 18, 1998

Before the first blush of color alters the landscape, the wind has already delivered Autumn’s first chilling kiss, signaling summer’s end. From that moment, change comes swiftly. Sister Winter looks on from the shadows, confident in her knowing, patient in her task. The transition occurs almost overnight, leaving the trees and valleys painted in rusty gold crimson splendor.

Autumn sparks a dance of joy; her voice lingering on the crisp morning air. Hers is a song of gentle thanks and gracious farewell to sister summer, who now readies for a three season nap. Summer has blessed man with yet another generous harvest and seed to sow after winter’s thaw. Try as we might, we cannot alter or resist time’s unflinching momentum.

Autumn’s gift is a stunning visual spectacle as she serenades the fields, steep canyons, vast forests and remaining wilderness with her soulful lullaby. She offers a brief space of reflection, which connects the land to our beating hearts, reminding us that as one thing ends another begins. Autumn song is the spirit voice of falling leaves, peaceful surrender, and the perfect harmony shared between all four sister seasons.

About this poem:
Wow, this was written 14 years ago. There is much reflection with autumn's coming. What have I accomplished this whole past year? As I take stock, I feel the sting of yet another good~bye in my life. Each season turns yet another page of that life. Live well. Laugh often!~

Autumn

October 1976

The lush colors of summer have faded, leaving an eerie, unexplainable stillness to settle within me. A stillness eased only by the transition of bold new colors splashed against the shifting October sky. Overnight, the leaves come alive with gold, blushing reds, orange brown, even soft pink. Even as I write this, the autumn wind whispers its message, prying leaves from secure stems and branches. One by one, they fall earthward in graceful flight.

The colors shift yet again to blend with earth, peeling bark and dying grass. Once they have scratched their way across country roads and city sidewalks, they settle to decompose wherever fate has cast them. As it has always been and shall ever be, mother earth claims what she has made. A great sleep befalls the land for several moons, until spring is called to spill forth her bounty. The cycle continues onward without the slightest sigh.

I walk the fields, inhaling the scent of dampened autumn leaves, so humbled with the reminder of the delicate balance between life and death. Autumn has a presence all its own, as does each of the seasons. I keep inside of me all that my senses collect, savoring the spirit of what is now. I see a barren landscape with trees standing tall and naked against an ashen sky. Frosty mornings have already made their presence known. I will miss the sun light, cherishing those brief moments when it peeks out from behind dark clouds.

Autumn is a time for reflection, as well as the planting of new dreams. A time for mittens, hot chocolate, a warm hat and coat, Kleenex, red cheeks, a fireplace glow. Cookies and pumpkins, racking leaves, trick or treat, brisk starry nights, cozy bedding, fresh snow.

Fall In Concert

The smell in the apartment lingered
heavily above me as if it was to
settle somewhere soon.
The fragrance was sweet and fruity
with just a hint of flower aroma.
As i open the door the smell follows
me out into the hall where it mixes
with the odor of fried chicken,
grease, and trash taken out recently.
I open the door to go outside and fall
hits me in the face as if to say come
join the essence of this day.
Fall smells comes into the apartment
overpowering what is already there.
The smell is one to let you know
fall is here and winter is coming.
The beauty of fall is in the trees
and the different colored leaves
out there for all to see.
Just look around fall is everywhere
and in every sound.
As you step on the leaves they crackle
the trees empty branches hit each
other and music is made.
This is falls way of asking you to
Come outside and join in this
beautiful fall day.

Trees

Different shades of
yellow, red and green.
They are in front of
you for all to see in
their glory.
Look out your window
and up to see the trees
bending down to meet thee.
They raise a branch as
if to say how do you
do in there own way.
Just listen to them one
day they play music in
their own way.
Trees have life for all
to see, but you must look
and listen quietly for
all the possibilities
that are there for thee.

Beauty

Thank you God i say
to thee for making
earth full of beauty
and life that all
can enjoy.
Lord think you for
the small things i
see in life like
a bird in a tree.
Thank you for life
for me and my family.
Thank you for the
SEASONS that change.
That shows all the
beauty around you
that is and can be.
The earth and all
the possibilities.
Just sit and watch
as earth does it's
thing maybe you will
see God in his
majesty watching
down at thee.

The lonely Mohave

On windswept dunes mid arid lands
stand cactus all alone
Tenaciously they sink their roots
beneath the golden sands.

Tumbleweeds blow by with haste
as dust storms cloud the skies
Sidewinders slither to their shade
lest soaring heat bring their demise

At ones' base a longhorns' skull
lay baked by searing heat
The witness to a cattle drive
one thirsting steer grown weak

The desert is a lonely place
where only vultures fly
To feed on those, who unprepared,
wander there and die.

for the sky and the bird

here sky I give you this tree
[though it doesn't really belong to me]
so it's branches may help to hold you up
and you willn't fall on my head
so it's leaves will clean you and flower for free
and their fragrance may cover the smell of the dead

here bird I give you this tree
[though it doesn't really belong to me]
that you may use it for food rest and family
should some person future not savvy its purpose
cut it down and remove it
or deny you its use
without placing another for all to peruse
may you crap on their head and whistle abuse

Blackness settles

Darkness slowly falls to the
earth for the clouds have
started to close us in from
the vision of the sun.
The wind blows it's cool air
to the earth where all swirls
around.
The rain comes hard and cold
to the ground and me.
For it pulls the leaves
lifting them up and down.
The light on the lamp post is
all that lights my way as i
walk in the path of nature.
I watch the people and cars around.
Yet the darkness grows blacker
still as the night takes over the day.
For all has climbed into to
bed for the night.
Now i bid you a good day and
say good night as i go my way.

Move In The Wind

The trees move as if
to dance to the beat
that the wind puts
under their limbs.
A few start and soon
the others follow.
It is as if you are
watching a play.
One bends down to
greet you and say good
morning come on in and
join us today.
Then as you watch them
it is as if they are
in harmony.
Not one trying to out
due another.
Yet working together
to get the job done.
