Sunrise

The beauty begins early in the morning. Fog on the ground and clouds in the sky, leave for the day. Sunrise is on its way. The sunshine gets in my eyes. Sunshine is filled with surprise.

Another day starts with a sunrise for one and all. Sweet and warm as if an angel's wings are wrapped around you. Lay back and enjoy, for soon it will all go away. Some days are filled with skies of gray. Sunrise has a magical way. Sunrise I wish would come to wake me every day. I pray that the sunshine will forever stay.

I cannot think of anything as lovely as a sunrise. In all its greatness, I feel so blessed. This is my day of play and rest. Can't think of anything as powerful than this. Except perhaps, being sun kissed.

Nature Portraits 2 - Mountain, Sequoia, Sunset

The grandeur of a majestic mountain
with its snow-capped peak
enveloped in fleecy white clouds
against a clear azure blue sky

The glorious majesty of a stately sequoia
the largest living thing on earth
its massive trunk over thirty feet wide
with its gnarled rugged beauty

The wondrous artistry of the setting sun
edging the darkened clouds with silver linings
and painting the evening sky
in brilliant colours of the rainbow

Experience and Knowledge

words are like a map
and experience is the territory
a map can only give knowledge
"about" the territory
it can never give knowledge
"of" the territory
this can only be obtained
through direct experience

Of Deserts, Oceans and Tundras

In the vast deserts life struggles
clinging on by their toe nails
short scrubby plants poke out
a hot haven for scorpions

See the marks in the red sand
of where a snake slithered by
side winding its way over
the baking hot sands of dunes

Here all life is sparse
only the fit surviving

Yet in the vast oceans
life teems with brilliance
various colourful corals
with sparkling little fish

Immense whales roam at will
see their water sprouts
gushing up in fountains
as silently they glide by

Shoals of fish darting by
seaweed lazily waving

Then there are the snowy tundras
life here too is for the fittest
majestic polar bear with cubs
fishing at an air hole in the ice

Penguins scurrying as fast as they can
they have no intention of being supper
sea lions lay on the rocky snowy shores
here to mate and give birth to pups

The wolf pack roaming far and wide
searching for their elusive next meal

As I travel these places in my mind
I am struck by how alike our lives are
we go through hard times as we traverse
the winding paths set before us

Then there are the times of plenty
when all is sunny and delightful
a time to enjoy and even to reflect
to give thanks that all is so good

On to the winter which comes to all
a time too of hardship and being slow
the sense of life starting to wind down
the reluctance acceptance as we near the end

Day's End

The setting sun in all her glory
Made evening sky blush...
Hues of orange, red and gold splashed here
And dashed there with a bold stroke
Clouds stood still as she lowered herself
Into the mountains' cradle...
The birds sang a lullaby
And the crickets joined the chorus
Boys and girls, playing hopscotch
Called in to dinner
By tired moms
And dads crawled in from labor and toil
To be greeted with smiles of hope and love
Lamps were lit and curtains drawn
None had time to view the glory
That was the setting sun
Another day had come and gone

Heart of the Sea

The heart of the sea is a mother's heart
She is the great ancestral mother of all life on the planet
Deep within the dark mysterious waters of her womb
She conceived and gave birth to the first life form
which evolved into more complex organisms
that live on the land and in the air

She is an essential part of the planet's ecosystem
feeding the clouds which bring rain and snow
that sustain life on the earth
Through tiny ocean plants and photosynthesis
she removes carbon dioxide from the air
and converts it to more than one half of the oxygen
in the earth's atmosphere

She is the great food provider to the planet
having her own internal food chain
with tiny phytoplankton at the lower end
and enormous sharks and whales at the upper end
She feeds creatures from the land and air
that venture to fish in her waters

She is a thing of beauty even in her enraged fury
with massive waves towering over a hundred feet
and the seething white foam of her waters
This has been her action
even before the advent of man on the planet
Man must respect her behaviour
or suffer death and destruction if he does not

She is a thing of beauty in her calm stillness under the setting sun
which lights up the evening sky in its glorious splendour
and paints a glistening beam of light on the water's surface
in line with the sun and surrounds it
with brilliant colours of the rainbow

morning has broken.............

Splinters of light pierce through the cloud laden horizon
as the sea laps lazily on the shore
the shrill of gulls battling over remnants of food
left behind from visitors of the night before
the welcoming sand absorbs the tensions
natures healer of all that ails
while the salt air stirs the senses
allowing clarity to prevail
soldier crabs march in unison
away from the thunderous sound
of footsteps making their way
across the shell laden ground
driftwood from another land
half buried from the hightide
often intrigues me of its journey
what seas did it ride
a mirrored sea reflects
a whispering dawn trying to break free
of the clouds grasp
holding back its identity
an coconut palm lay half broken
undermined by a huge sea
fighting to survive
against natures fee
beauty and the beast
one and the same
so many moods
to appreciate is sane
an early morning walk
with the one who has your heart
sharing simple pleasures
for a beautiful day to start.......

Collection of Birds (haiku)

Happy pelican
eating an enormous fish
see his pouch bulging

Merry kingfisher
waiting on his pole for fish
he darts and spears one

Full of joy and fun
the skylark warbles in glee
delight in each note

Fearsome eagle drops
plummeting down like a stone
striking hard he kills

TSUNAMI

Tectonic plates shift on the ocean's floor
thrusting upwards an enormous quantity of water
generating a wave that keeps increasing in size
as it moves on the ocean's surface

Attaining a massive height over a hundred feet
it races across the ocean at jet speed
tossing huge ships and boats like little toys
as it rushes towards the shore

It reaches the land with unstoppable force
journeying inland for many miles
changing streets and roads into raging rivers
sweeping away almost every thing in its path

Houses, trees, cars are tossed around and smashed
by the sheer momentum of the moving water
leaving a trail of debris on the land
and death and destruction in its wake

October Forest

Such is a bare, naked forest
Now late in October
Undressed of her regal robes
Lying scattered and tattered
All around her chilled floor
Her boney fingers extended
Twisted darkly pointing
Upwards and accusingly towards
A new canopy of winter stars
