A Flower - Children's Poem

I am a pretty flower
all dressed up in blue
I love the falling rain
and the sunshine too

My mother is the plant
She feeds me every day
and keeps me looking bright
so I'm happy and gay

I have some friends
who come to visit me
one is a lovely butterfly
the other is a honey bee

I feed them with my nectar
and then they fly away
I tell them to come back
on another day

About this poem:
I wrote this poem for my nephew's eight year old daughter to encourage her to write poetry. She has an excellent command of English at her age.
Writing this made me recall some of the poems I learned at school as a child. I hope I have succeeded, at least to some extent, in capturing the innocence and joyful feeling of childhood. I also hope it would bring out the child in some of you; I would like your comments from such a perspective since this is a children's poem. Or perhaps you can share it with children, get their comments and post them. Thank you!

Seasons Of Change (epic)

The earth slips into a deep sleep
all beneath its surface now dormant
sleepy animals curled up in their dens
soon to fall into the sleep of hibernation
all now slowed down awaiting the snows
trees now denude of their canopy of leaves

Jack Frost comes creeping with icy fingers
covering everything in stark bright white
hoar frost, branches sparkling with icicles
softly, come the first snows just a sprinkle
a promise of more, laden sullen skies above
in the morning, a world of brilliant white

Fresh and crisp unmarked by human tracks
just the odd three toed marks of birds
deer trails pass through so distinct
the flash of colour from Red Robin's beast
drifts of snow, some very deep lie in wait
for unwary travellers tempting with beauty

Slowly, oh so slowly the thaw arrives
everywhere a-run with water trickling
now appears the odd patch of faded green
Winter releases her hold with reluctance
fighting to the end, then slips away
leaving Spring to awaken the land with warmth

Now the birds are busy, gathering the twigs
also moss and feathers with some sheep wool
busily building nests all shapes and sizes
the males preening and showing off to hens
fighting for the rights of lady and territory
the winner, the one who's chicks will be born

Leaves unfurling on the trees reaching out
sun bathed they quickly grow and bush up
to give shelter to birds and tender plants
bulbs now pushing up snowdrops appearing
followed by gay crocus and waving daffodil
finally come the roses, tulips and lupins

All now a splash with colour gleaming in the sun
Summer has arrived with her hot sultry heat
languidly the breezes flow over the landscape
an earth that is now ablaze with vibrant greens
emerald vieing with turquoise, lime and pea green
scarlet beside pink and red, a vision of beauty
pure white of daisies and yellow petals of roses

Too soon, far too soon slowly the nights lengthen
a chill is felt in the air as daylight fades away
leaves start to turn to various shades of brown
then giving up their grip are carried by the wind
plump apples fill the orchards they taste so sweet
corn and other crops are now ready for the harvest

Bare trees now greet us as the days shorten quickly
Autumn drifts gently in, time to light the log fires
to tuck one's self up with a book and mug of cocoa
ponder on the year gone by, the highs and the lows
the cycle of seasons complete for yet another year
life reaffirmed and ready to face whatever is ahead

A Quiet Place...

come with me
to a quiet place...
with views serene...
above, an amazing sight
the clouds that clothe
the deep blue skies...
bring depths of hues
so warm and bright
the water comes in
gently with the tide
teasing, lapping
my feet, such delight
with views serene
mesmerize the eyes
it never fails to
touch the heart until
relieved, you'll sigh
aahh, bliss, such bliss!
to a quiet place
come with me

i spy...

amidst the showers of welcoming rain
colours emerging are natures gain
shades of green from dark to light
an amazing backdrop till twilight
yellow bells catch my eye
fiery red flame tree enthuses my sigh
bouganvillea's purple is so unique
daisy white quite the treat
shimmering silver in the afternoon hue
the river lays quietly under the blue
blackbirds squawking on their way
as dark grey clouds head my way
soft pink sets a lovely mood
as the day ends not to be rude
i see the world as i should
full of beauty full of good
everyday i am blessed with what i see
my eyes a joy and there unique destiny........

a together time

when I awakened at daybreak, I first went outside
all about on the ground there was fresh fallen snow
I quickly gathered a new stack of wood for the fire
then headed back in the house and over to the stove
my body was still stiff from the day’s work before
but I started to limber as the flames became higher

as usual my mother had risen hours before
to be preparing the meal that would be served on this day
she was baking and sifting, back and forth ‘cross the floor
doing those things only she could, in her own special way

it’s thanksgiving at our house with family gathered ‘round
heads bow in silence as father offers the grace
at the head of the table set a place for our Lord
with somber gratitude of mother earth’s hallowed ground
as farmers we live in the balance of nature
we are thankful to them from whom all bounty has poured

no matter what the outcome
we are grateful for our harvest
as we have been, year after year
we are counting our blessings
for we still have one another
in health and that we hold so dear

thanksgiving at our house, the family is here
with our glasses all raised, let us toast in good cheer

Rains Under the Storm

The man was weary and you heard his voice from afar soon the child cried out oh mommy please do not leave me behind as daddy cried out take shelter the storm is hitting now.
Rubbing hands together looking for the perfect spot to lay and rest was so many fighting for what once belong to him or his little sister.
Our nation is still and so many people saying what is going on the siren went off and so many ran for shelter and others wanted to watch.
Children torn as once was his toy room and parents looking to see what is the next step to go and where will we go tonight November rains and winds on the way in and the way out of Washington IL. So many feared and others just prayed and then it was still and then it was a mess of destruction as God has a plan and sometimes without an understanding.
Crying people who are weary as the community pulls together and individuals are claiming what once was their home but in altogether it is the sign of reality that times hit hard and could end soon.
“The core of the world as you read further in Matthew verse 12:39 as Jesus has spoken with the Pharisees” (King James Bible Mathew verse 12:39). Could not be spoken as the township of Washington IL, is broken and so many dismayed to what the earth will bring back.
God is good and so many were not touched and others where God uplifted so many as Church Bells rang on this particular day with high winds and higher weather hit in the 70’s and churches resume to hold on as others wondered if they would make it another moment until they saw the end of this day's disaster.
The reality of this is America can uphold the bad and the good so can we as God has that plan to rebuild and become who we were yesterday. Pulling together to detect what may of landed in a few towns close by a photo of the favorite pet or even a child or grandparent photo these are the memories that can be rebuilt but the home will never be the same unless you claim Jesus Christ as your Savior and this home will never have any distractions that lead to destruction like November 17th will forever be a scar on earth and a stone to what could just be the warning to what could be the end forever.

SUMMER FLAME

Vivid vermilion, bursting with warmth and life
Lining length of streets where we live
A beautiful sight I can't help but seek
Each and every time I'm out on the streets

Harbinger of warmer months to come
Slightly dryer soil gives more buds to bloom
Hollering jungle's rhythm, her majesty's here
Announcing the coming of each brand new year

Shapely limbs that reaches far and wide
Offering respite from heat morn'n 'til eventide
Pregnant with heavy buds and dense green foliage
Soon to carpet every inch of ground in the yard

From striking flow'rs,feathery leaves to shapely pods
Flaccid green when young soon age to woody dark brown
On sturdy branches suspended, looking flamboyant
Promising a display of colours most bright and grand

Covered in corymbs, your beautiful limbs
Spotted in yellow and white, such a dream
Swaying merrily with a gentle wind, happiness gleams
In every Royal Poinciana tree I've seen!

About this poem:
I was missing NZ Christmas trees, the pohutokawas in bloom this time of the year...then I remembered Ponciana trees are everywhere here.. like pohutokawa trees they also herald the coming of the new year...I wrote this last night and as I am posting it now I checked if I have the spelling right...to my surprise I found a song about the tree... written long before I was born. It just shows how easily these trees can captivate an admiring soul...

A Night to Remember

When at last the sunlight has gone too far
Never really poking through winter clouds
Gathering pigeons near the chimneys are
Anxiously just making their warmth a crowd

Can you blame the hungry falcon up high
Survival only takes a moments dive
When panic starts the flock takes to the sky
Lest hunger need a reason to deprive

More the cycle of life goes round and round
Past horizons that measure night and day
For the cloaking night does enshrouds the ground
Make more its taste a spiritual buffet

For if all life were kind enough to live
How much more could we ever want to give

Once upon a time

once upon a time
on a cold and snow day
to my surprise when I
looked out my window way
a big snow man standing
and in my drive way
I peeked out my head
and I though now who put you there
the snow man had wrapped
around his neck a
bright red scarf
a carrot for a nose
a smile that some one spray painted on
I thought Wow who blessed me and
put this snow man by my lawn
the snow man arms was made out of branches
off of a tree
with a red Santa hat on top of his head
and a small sign hung around his neck
saying Merry Christmas friend
I thought oh what the heck
I cant wait to tell my family this story
about,,,,,,,,,
once up on a time
a big snow man appear in my drive way
holding a sign,

On Winter Shores

Restless lake you’ve become all blue and grey
Crashing waves now crust on your icy screes
Hear the winter winds come howling away
When cold drops below tolerable degrees

Faced with mighty hunger a gull awaits
Motionless and crouched in its ruffled plume
Ever searching eyes scanning sharp with fate
Shimmering morsels with scales to consume

My thoughts drift slowly away like the snow
Swirl lightly like dancing feathers or leaves
All around me cast an eerie shadow grow
Anything my mind perceives or believes

Quiet the days in dusky December
Mirrored into my mind shall remember
