RE: my diabetes

I've dealt with 3 dieticians over the past 4 years.Like myself, you already neither drink nor smoke which makes things much more manageable. I think reading your profile you will know what I mean when I say that lack of power and not lack of knowledge is our dilemma. You are not going to gain 30 years of wisdom overnight.....like I said, 3 forward, 2 back.

RE: Has The West FAILED? Are we doomed?

Whatever happens, whoever is in power, regardless of the state of the economy and whether or not the bankers are prosecuted, most of us will still have to go to work as usual and pay our bills.sigh

Perhaps things need redressed when you can buy a T shirt for less than the import costs. Somebody, somewhere is paying for our lifestyles. dunno

RE: swiss oil company disregards embargo

I'd buy oil from Iran myself if I could. In Ireland we're currently paying €1.60 per litre for diesel and €1.70 for petrol. Damned right I would. conversing

Well, neutrality has nothing to do with trade. How else could we explain the US Airforce planes being refueled and US troops being serviced 10 minutes from my home at Shannon Airport? dunno

RE: my diabetes

Stop starving yourself for a kick off. If you can, try not to eat after 10 pm. If you do, then tell yourself it's ok and you may do better tomorrow. You will not change your habits over night so expect 3 steps forward and 2 back. It can take years. I struggle with my type2 as well sometimes. I love chocolate which doesn't help. But morning readings will always be a wee bit high so expect it, even if you've starved yourself the day before. Here's what happens.

Your body starts to wake up in the morning before your mind. In order to provide energy for this, your liver releases sugar into your blood stream...but of course, the sugar can't get into the cells in the same way as if you had eaten it. So you wake up with a higher than normal blood count. Sugar is NOT your enemy. You need it to live. What you have is essentially a circulation problem. It's like having a car without a petrol tank. You need to learn to introduce the fuel as you use it. That why we look for low GI foods that redlease their sugars gradually into our systems. We've lost automatic control.

Have a light healthy breakfast with wholegrain stuff and watch the carbohydrae/ sugar levels on the cereal boxes. Some things that look healthy are actually loaded with sugars ...and we all need that fry up once in a while too. Drink plenty of water and take your glucophage or whatever medication you are on. Try to get a 40 minute walk each day or perhaps buy a bicycle or swim. Mix up your exercise so it's less of a chore.

I treat my type 2 as a bit of a gift and I'll tell you why. I was 47 when diagnosed so moving into middle age where men are vulnerable to heart attacks, strokes and God knows how many other health issues that come from a childish spirit trapped in a well used and abused body.

Type2 diabetes stopped me in ,my tracks and forced me to look after myself. So the cigarettes went...I smoked 20 a day for 30 years. Exercise and a better diet (sometimes I fall off the wagon too) came into my life but I'm no adonis I can assure you, but I'm probably healthier and have more energy than I ever had.

Experiment a bit. Read up on good and bad carbohydrates. You do need some red meat too so don't let anybody tell you otherwise but watch the amounts. Once a week is ok but a steak no bigger than the palm of your hand and the depth of your pinkie finger. You'll find you've been eating too much for years anyway. Everybody does, even non diabetics.

Most importantly....AVOID DIABETIC FOODS! they are loaded with sorbitol which will give you the runs, dehydrate you and concentrate your blood sugar still further.

There is no such thing as a diabetic diet. We are just being forced to eat the way that everybody should. I hope this helps.

RE: Proxy error

Oh, and a few months before they 'Upgraded' the site, there was some problem that slowed everything right down. There was all sorts of trouble posting and you would have to log off and on a few times. That's when we lost the IM facility.

After the revamp, the speed improved but it never got back to being as technically good as it once was. conversing

RE: Strong Negative Emotions

This is why I believe spiritual growth has to come first. My spirit has to be strong enough to stand up to my own emotions which often want to do the wrong thing. I usually know the right thing to do. Acting on that thought is a whole different ball game. As we say in AA...Lack of power, not lack of knowledge was my dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live.....

I would not dare suggest where others find that power but without it, for me, your very wise words would get me nowhere. handshake

RE: Strong Negative Emotions

I do, I do. I get a wee bit carried away. In 25 years, I've gone from someone who ignored his own feelings thinking I was being noble and selfless to someone who has realised that you ignore your emotions at your own peril and that breathing, although a selfish act, is absolutely necessary for survival.laugh

RE: Proxy error

That's it. Blame the Indians and not the cowboys who designed the site. laugh

RE: spirit

Well, I find my spirit within myself. As usual, my God put it in the last place I would think to look. roll eyes I do have to nurture my spirit. It is like a flame that burns within me and there was a time when it was down to a mere glowing ember. That was a bad time for me when I was driven either by emotion or desire and brought no fulfillment.

I nurture this spirit by contemplation and meditation combined with keeping myself connected to nature and the planet which has sustained me through good times and bad times. I like to feel I belong here as much as the trees and the birds. This gives me both humility and security. I leave organised religion to those more able to handle it.

RE: What do you think about e-learning?

I actually see E learning as the education vehicle of the future as a cheaper option to providing schools and teacher pupil ratios. My concern is that education is about more than academic achievement. It also involves learning to interact with our peers.

I remember as a kid though, seeing programmes on tv about how kids in the outback in Australia were educated using two way radios at home to communicate with teachers, so it has a precedent. conversing

RE: living with alcoholics

I'm am ex drunk myself and trust me on this, your family member will not stop till he or she starts hurting themselves. It's impossible to love someone who is on self destruct. They will turn every good deed you do against you. I made the lives of those around me a misery and I had no idea I was doing it.

But to help you find some peaceful way of living with this, can I suggest you contact Al Anon. What you don't realise is that you will get sick along with the alcoholic. It's not for everyone, but they have a wealth of experience behind them.

I wish you peace and strength. This can be a hard path waiting for someone you love to hit bottom.

RE: Is Christianity based on Myth? Or did Jesus ever exist?

Erm, people were living in civilised societies for thousands of years before the arrival of Jesus Christ as well as the current population of Jews, Muslims, Pagans, Atheists, Buddhists....need I continue? I think your own book says, 'My father's house has many mansions.' conversing

What Will You Leave Behind To Show You Were Ever Here?

100 years from now your grandchildren will not be here. AGAIN...I specifically said apart from your children? What is your problem with the English language?

What Will You Leave Behind To Show You Were Ever Here?

I was just posting somewhere about musicians dying off as I get older which reminds me that none of us will be here forever.

Apart from your children, what proof will there be in a hundred years time that you ever existed? What contribution to the world will you leave behind?

RE: Oz Music

I guess that's the problem with getting older in modern times. People you grew up listening to start to die off and it sort of makes me think of my own mortality. At least they left something behind for us all. conversing
