Reaching for the Light

Such a short life the sunflower has;
but, aah, the glory of it! From its
small, flat, pointed dark-brown seed,
it seeks out the moisture of the soil.
Using summer-sun heat, it bursts,
portending an elongated exterior.
First break in its life-encasing shell
gives way to a sprout, straight up,

ready to go. The stalk displays
the chlorophyll product
of solar rays as its sprint
to meet its creator begins.
Inch begets inch as
cells beget leaf after leaf—
each thick, verdant, curly—
showing off an expansive surface

eager to absorb and transform
light and rain into energy.
This factory continues to
work, day in, day out, until
its efforts begin to pay off
with a much-anticipated reward.
A one-and-only bud forms
on the now-towering stalk.

Thick and rough fibers
stacked side-by-side under
tiny hairs glistening in the sun
give texture to brownish-green stem
join forces to remain erect
able to sway in the gentle
and oft not-so-gentle breezes.
Yellow-gold ray florets begin

to peer out into the world above—
with little thought to what got
them to such great height.
They spread themselves out
proudly in a spiral pattern
handed down to them, ready
for the kiss of the rain and
caress of the butterfly,

forming a vibrant ring around
the future - dense, dark, prickly
to the touch - filled with promise.
As its work is completing,
the sunflower bows its head
to the birth-giving ground,
gives thanks for its season,
waits for the cycle of life to repeat—
this reaching for the light.

A Night Made For Us Two...

You must have hung the moon tonight,
Just so we could dine in her candle light..
and then dance beneath the magical sight,
of a blanket of stars twinkling in delight.

The music courtesy of some sycamore trees,
swaying gently in the breeze.
We shared a kiss under the glance of an owl who cried "who "
And then proceeded to dedicate the night to me and you..

The crickets eager to be in on the fun too,
serenaded us the whole night through.
And you pulled me close and then we were one,
Much to the surprise, and red blush of the rising sun.

Who Says Cyberspace Isn't Real?

I remember the first day,
I actually set eyes upon you,
Standing there by the door,
You'd been waiting there patiently for hours..
Looking lost, and a bit forlorn in that old blue denim jacket.

I watched you for a few moments before I sighed deeply
And made my way over and whispered,"Hey, its me"..
A slow smile made its way across your worried face,
As you slowly took me in and nodded.. So it is...

And all the months of waiting, the days of email
And long nights spent talking ,laughing on the phone,
Had brought us to this place,
We went inside and,
Over coffee chatted away into the night,
This time face to face
Never to look back.

Tomorrow!

Tomorrow!

We are born and are soon full grown

But what’s it all about

The day doth follow the sun

And the moon & stars command the night

We populate the world, have Wars & Sickness

Live forever in a human fright

For we know not why we are here

Members of a food chain, wrong or right

To propagate until the end of judgment time

We fish the sea’s and fertilize the land

Eating cattle, lambs, chickens & swine

What have these poor creatures ever done

to us, for us to eat them and so to dine

Create a better world, I ask you why and for who?

Tomorrow’s children will be grown up

and soon departed too!

For someday we may be part of a secret plot to make us all into a chicken stew

And when we depart this place called earth, where or where, do we go?

Are we to be eaten up by a dark hole in outer space

A neutron star, a quantum leap so to speak

Is there such a place, will we be left within this darkened place until a gravitational collapse?

Of men or mice as the saying goes

Please don’t ask me what happens after we are gone, as I believe no one knows!

I hope the stories of years gone by are true
that there is a safe heavenly place for me & you!

We all have to venture into our heavenly tomorrows alone.

Of course if we are like an ant that is stamped on perhaps it will suddenly end and we will be no more ~

I wonder what tomorrow will be like or if there
will be a tomorrow?

Cafe challenge (who would she be)?

I leave it up to you poets..
Whom among all the poet ladies do
you think I am most compatible?

Wow! Have I opended Pandora's box
or what? Lol

I have a deep love an admiration for
all my lady poets to be sure, but perhaps
one may be suited for me.

You know me.
You know my heart.
You know my strengths
and weaknesses to a degree.

Soooo... break out the popcorn
and cokes and get that vote in.

This could be fun.

My Crush

You're young
I'm old
Something's begining to unfold
Your cheerful
I'm tearful
We better be careful
Your mature
I'm imature
We make a beautiful picture
Your dark skinned
I'm light skinned
Baby come in
Your lips are pink
My lips are pale
If kissing were a crime we'd be in jail
You're my moon light
I'm your sun light
Say you'll stay the night
You like to please
I like to tease
Yet we're both at ease
Its Always a treat
when our lips meet
Can you Feel my heart beat
Always remember
How special you are
For you're my shinning star

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR MARTINA

a lady of great beauty
you are an epitome of kindness
words you form in your hand
to sooth all those in pain
I have never seen you pout
nor down as I always was
you love so deep for all of us
making us smile and laugh
my dear Martina today is your day
to celebrate your birthday
may you enjoy it with fun
laughter and many more to come

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY FRIEND..

Always Bring A Knife To A Gun Fight

Shoulder to shoulder Army and Marines
21st century soldier lethal killing machines
Were to take this strong hold and set nations free
Starting with ridding this city from insurgent filled streets
Gave civilians early warning tomorrow we'll invade
Closing in to the center until our enemies are laid waste
If you remained in the city then you're presumed to be a threat
Honestly I've never felt so alive to see so much death
Remove emotions, suppress fears, then move on to the bridge
No mechanism support for this battle just our strong wills to live
From house to house we kicked down every single door
Fueled by adrenaline and hate from the first twenty-six days at war
Prepared to engage in any hand to hand combat
Enclosed battle zones allow for these kind of attacks
Its a different feeling to pull a trigger and watch the bodies fall
Then to fight human eye to human eye bare knuckled in a brawl
Pulling blade from sheath then stabbing the threat seven times in his side
Compassion is a but ghost when its his life or mine
Three more times into the ribs until there was nothing left in his eyes
The day I befriended fear and I brought my knife to a gun fight

sweet dreams [40 word challenge

close those eyes
feel this breath
sweet blowing kisses
ever so softly
in tenderness
into your sleep
a moonlight shadow
gently caresses
softly upon
your cheek

peach lips kiss
sweet melting honey
into those dusky dreams
held only in paradise

healing drops [14 words]

harvesting tears
each drop
a pearl
loves jewel
in salted wounds
begins healing emotions
