Fame and Stardom

Attainment of success, stardom and fame
Remains the ultimate dream of many
Who seek the publication of their name
Upon the future pages of history

The journey to such a destination
Requires effort and dedication
Those who at last gain such recognition
Enjoy a well deserved satisfaction

Some celebrities who make this journey
Find coping with this new life can be rough
There's an invasion of their privacy
And the demands of stardom can be tough

They then turn to some drug to ease the stress
Whether it's alcohol or other stuff
Soon their entire life can become a mess
And dealing with it's pressures can be rough

Bouts of anxiety and depression
Are what they have to endure constantly
Some develop a serious addiction
That may lead to suicidial tendency

Women tend to choose a gentler ending
Like drug overdose or a means that's neat
Some may opt to end it all by hanging
Mindful not to mess up the body sheath

Some men go for a violent ending
By putting a bullet through their own head
Others jump off a bridge or tall building
Seeking to ensure that they will be dead

Those aspiring to fame and stardom
Pursue your dream and goal diligently
Just be mindful of how things can become
And seek to be guided accordingly

About this poem:
There has been a lot of activity recently here on Poetry Corner. Several of the more senior poets seem to have taken a break. Let's hope they return soon. In the meantime, several new poets have appeared. This piece is a welcome to them. Poetry is larger than any individual or group of indivduals. The show must go on. I invite all poets, including the new, to post their views on Poetry Corner. We can all benefit from each others' views. Thanks!

HONESTY

Honesty is the best policy
That's a lesson I was taught at school
But today in a world of trickery
Is that merely advice for a fool?

One time a person's word was his bond
A handshake was used to seal a deal
Today, no oath can be relied on
For some are always trying to steal

I shall be honest in my action
For to myself I have to be true
In each and every situation
No matter what others say or do

Peace of mind is most important to me
That's why I shall always strive to be free
To act in all truth and sincerity
For honesty is the best policy

About this poem:
I tried to write this poem in the style of some poems I learned and loved as a child. I have a special fondness for balanced rhyming poems. I think they are easier for children to learn. I believe it is important for children to learn the importance of honesty and I dedicate this poem to them.

Imagining

Imagining I'm with you,
with my arms around you tight.
Imagining that you're still here
after that dark and stormy night.

Imagining that we're walking
together side by side.
But now I walk these streets alone
my tears I try to hide.

Imagining we're laughing,
your hand tightly in mine.
Imagining that through the rain
the sun begins to shine.

Imagining that you hold me,
you shield me from the cold.
But I guess I'll keep imagining
until I am withered and old.

SecondAct

And if I should awake some day to find

And if I should awake some day to find
My dreams spread out like sheets of poetry
Discarded, unread; workings of a mind
That leaped and fell at every boundary

Then what can I say but at least I tried
To keep my aim upon the truer course
And if at times I wandered to the side
I'll not add lie on lie with sham remorse

For after midnight hours with Holy Books
And a century of yogic disciplines
I'll still fall to me knees when some girl looks
And drink the night away with dearest friends

Falling In Love

Falling in love for the first time
can be very exciting at the start
But such love is usually not long-lasting
and may lead to a broken heart

A person whose heart has been broken
seeks a love that is more mature
When found such love heals the broken heart
and is more beautiful and likely to endure

Beauty In Imperfection

The rugged bark of an old tree
with imperfection due to its cracks
is a wondrous thing of beauty
and it's the imperfection that attracts

We know that a star-shaped flower
does not make a perfect star
Yet it has a certain loveliness
that induces a sense of wonder

A hand-crafted ceramic bowl
because of its asymmetry
is a wonderful artefact
that is valued very highly

An old-time cobblestone street
has a unique charm and quaintness
due to its imprecise pattern
that gives it it's loveliness

Perfection is not easy to attain
and even more difficult to sustain
Beauty lies in imperfection
and they are a natural combination

In Defense Of The Rain

Some folks like to complain
And are very fickle
They fume when rain is falling
And fret at a mere drizzle

Wild birds and animals
They all need the rain
Which gives them water
For their lives to sustain

The plants and the trees
And all the lovely flowers
For them to grow and flourish
They also need the showers

The food crops that are grown
To provide food for us all
Each of them would perish
If the rain did not fall

So please think of these things
Before you start complaining
And creating a lot of fuss
The next time rain is falling

A Flower - Children's Poem

I am a pretty flower
all dressed up in blue
I love the falling rain
and the sunshine too

My mother is the plant
She feeds me every day
and keeps me looking bright
so I'm happy and gay

I have some friends
who come to visit me
one is a lovely butterfly
the other is a honey bee

I feed them with my nectar
and then they fly away
I tell them to come back
on another day

About this poem:
I wrote this poem for my nephew's eight year old daughter to encourage her to write poetry. She has an excellent command of English at her age.
Writing this made me recall some of the poems I learned at school as a child. I hope I have succeeded, at least to some extent, in capturing the innocence and joyful feeling of childhood. I also hope it would bring out the child in some of you; I would like your comments from such a perspective since this is a children's poem. Or perhaps you can share it with children, get their comments and post them. Thank you!
