Depression

So dark
and deep
burn these depths,
no light penetrates.
My languished soul
begs release from existence.
No love heals
nor beliefs save
from self hatred.
Dark stained thoughts
that engulf my presence.

No one sees through my eyes
what cannot be explained.
Why my head fills
with black shrouds of finality?
Questions eternal and beyond
leave my soul drained,
an empty heart
filled
with unbearable futility.

I know there is love
beyond the barrier I cannot break,
But the chains of mental distortion pull me
beyond life or care.
No words intrude
or make my jet flavored mood shake,
My descent spiraling
downward ever downwards
towards despair

This is my curse,
my evil,
my enigma of impenetrable mists.
Companions taste my mind
understanding the shadows of obsession.
Slowly sinking
Silently
towards the black emptiness of abyss,
My stagnant soul entombed
by the implosion of depression.

About this poem:
My Mother suffered from depression all her life and eventually took her own life.

This poem is a reflection of how I understood her illness, seeing the darkeness that surrounded her.

If you don't

If you don’t have a dog
your neighbor will not poison it

and if you don’t have a home
you will not have to run from it

when your father’s anger shakes the walls
that don’t exist because you don’t have a home

to grow up in—nowhere to learn
that the husband you won’t have

will not leave you for another woman
will not walk out your door one morning—

because you won’t have a door
for anyone to leave or enter through

and you won’t have a window
for anyone to see you

and if you don’t make plans
they will not need to be changed

like the diapers you won’t change
since you won’t have a child

who will never change your life
whose tiny fingers you will never hold
because of how hard you never wished
and planned her away so many times

and she will not grow up to hate you
for everything you never did

as if you didn’t have a child—and she won’t learn
that if you don’t have a memory

the past will not devour you
when you stop moving for a brief

moment. Long enough to let the sorrow
catch the joy you never feel because you

don’t want to feel the sorrow
its companion. And if you don’t feel—

there will be nothing left to heal.

Candle in the Window

Strike the match

As the sea carries horizontal rain
pelt'd beside me on the window frame
All the feet I've seen en-toe'd in the sand
each wave's taken out past part of time

Candle'd flame
chair's under me
crossed knee's fingered smoke
lookin out to a world the drops of rain covered wet
I shake out the flame wooden match it held to

Whistled kettle in the kitchen
tea for two
splat'n rain on the window
from one candle two flames
some black tea an me....~

The Love of a Rose

A single sole on the shoulder of a giant,
A meaningful role which is all so apparent,
I bring joy to people and even many tears
But my wolf in sheeps clothing can come with fears.

Looking so pretty and showered with bliss,
What follows my arrival is a soul loving kiss,
I will pick you up and represent new light,
For a moment or two there's no fear in sight.

I look beautiful alone and shine so single,
But can mix with my own, a deep loved mingle,
I represent so much and iconic to them all,
For it is i and i only that saves you from fall.

It is by now you should know, for who i am,
A burning red beauty, doing all that i can,
From my stunning smile, to my heartbreaking pose,
To you with love i proudly stand as a rose.

Tears Fall In My Heart

Tears fall in my heart
Rain falls on the town;
what is this numb hurt
that enters my heart?

Ah, the soft sound of rain
on roofs, on the ground!
To a dulled heart they came,
ah, the song of the rain!

Tears without reason
in the disheartened heart.
What? no trace of treason?
This grief's without reason.

It's far the worst pain
to never know why
without love or disdain
my heart has such pain!

Rainbow Promises

Her laugh was like a rainbow promising gold.
Her voice was consoling like that of a angel.
Her step was adventurous and ever bold.
Her prescence put everyone under her spell

Her countenance was assuring and charming.
Her smile was like sunshine and blue sky.
Her eyes sparkled and were most inviting.
Her singing was like a bird that would soon fly.

Her movements were sure and deliberate.
Her heart was compassionate and most true.
Her soul was pure and her kindness great.
Her love for her man was solid, sustaining too.

Her laugh was like a rainbow promising gold.
He longed for this marvelous fun loving woman.
If only the love she had was his to hold.
If only it was he she loved and not another man.

If only he could quietly instantly change places.
If only to bend the foundation of creativity.
If only he could change two bodies and faces.
If only he could direct time to a new reality.

If only to make this wondrous creature his.
If only she wasn’t beyond his passionate reach.
If only she was “mine not his”, but tis.
If only he could erase her memories each.

Her laugh was like a rainbow promising gold.
If only he could forget her to never again see.
If only he could make the visions grow very old.
Pure gold. Pure majic. Pure illusion. Pure misery.

Bee in kitchen, save me...REWARD

Purring whirring whirling soaring
throttles open engine roaring
large as rat, well mouse
no, big as van, as house
alone in house no spouse
approach with caution, make tea
hell its moving, ok plan B
ring male friend
sunday, foot ball on a bend
phone ringing no reply
helpless useless start to cry
takes off suddenly upwards shifting
still for a moment then lifting
call dog to help
backs off with yelp
sets off again buzzing nearer
from behind the curtain silhouette clearer
at top of curtain, powerful, smirking
moving surreptitiously, ominous lurking
Give in, genuflect and pray
if there is a God then make it go away
no? started praying to late?
give in to fear, capitulate..evacuate.

I'm going, if don't meet again, nice knowing.....

Love Reality

Cogs of grey membrane turning endlessly
Clutching memories slipping as if pulled by gravity
Endless thoughts and random theories
Midnight frantic dillusions and colourless visions
Stoic face or feigned smiles of fake platitutes
Dreary gloom set over a now vacant and debauched moon
Kiss her hard and pretend to swoon, words rehearsed
to make her believe the absurd
Coerced emotions injected and fabricated and left to bake
Words of affection carefully crafted to prevent rejection
What a strange, paradoxical and theatrical production love is.
Out, out damn honesty. Rehearse the script. Tis not real,
but is what it is ...the thespian wins and the honest fool
partakes of naught, then becomes the understudy to
learn the craft.

Death Scape

An absence of thought.
Dreamscape or naught.
Reborn again perhaps
Or blackness collapse.
Recline in fluffy cloud
Or burn and cry loud.
Poltergeist with aura
Or no more tomorrow.
Does anyone yet know?
Where we finally go...?

Blackheart

Everytime i look at you i see
my past my present and my future
all wrapped up
so perfectly.

It would be so easy just to be with you
To say good-bye to all of the reasons why..
It could never work with him..
And yet,even now..
I can't seem to say good-bye..

He can't make me happy. not like you could
He could never be the man I need
not the way you would

His love is superficial
and I guess that so am I..
Why else would I hang on
just to hear his pretty lies..
When I know in my heart of hearts
I should walk away.. just say good-bye.

A million dollar smile
cant disguise his cold black heart .
He may momentarliy light up the room..
but his smile can't light the moon..
not like you do..

A pretty face, cannot erase..
The cold black heart inside..
I can't believe that I have become
so meager and so shallow within..
But I guess that I have become what I despise..
It would seem I'm just like him..

Trading a beautiful face..
for love's warm embrace
And overlooking all I have ever wanted
and still I push it away..
Ignore the true beauty that lies within.

And what does this say about me..
Oh how I long to be set free
From this shallowness,
that eats away at me..
And from his cold and so blackheart.
That holds me captive..
In it's cold embrace.
A Beautiful face..
Can never take the place..
Can not begin to erase..
A cold black heart.
