Birdsville Races

There is this place with nothing
No-one during the year
But for one weekend in September they come from every parts
packed with nothing but beer

We set off on the long journey
with the mindset of only good times
no intentions, no worries, no plans
nothing but open minds

We rose to the sun and packed our gear
ready for a testing long drive
so long, we would have died of boredom
if it wasn't for our good vibe

We made a quick stop at Quilpie
with no intentions of staying
but soon we'd see a banner of the Kangarangadoo
six bucks each is all we'd be paying

the price of the caravan park that is
stumbling distance from the local water hole
and having a few too many
was our one and only goal

Our heads were pounding, our mouths were dry
as we woke to the swarm of flies
but we knew the trek must continue
so we packed and said our goodbyes

We'd been told to stop at Windorah
for the yearly crayfish races that night
we found out you could buy one and race it
so we thought that we just might

Three hundred we payed for Cods Wallop
it must have run near last
We forgave the little fella
the others were just too fast

We arrived as thousands of others did
with releived looks on our faces
our destination was finally upon us
the infamous Birdsville races

My father's a veteran at Birdsville
knows everyone, everything and how to sell
you want to buy a souvenir at out there
go see Graham Bell

We had to see him for another matter
the place was packed to the brim
But Dad already had a place set up for us
i knew we could rely on him

As the dark replaced light
and we'd downed a couple of beers
we noticed a loud drum beat
and the sound of many cheers

We followed the swarms of people
until the fuss we could finally see
it was a huge tent and a loud voice
both belonged to Fred Brophy

His fighters looked like movie stars
but The cowboy was the one to beat
Fred got his contenders every night
we were just happy with a seat

We were to attend the races the next day
after downing a bottle of rum
some say ten's a little early
even a little dumb

You couldn't pick a winner
on this harsh dirt track
eight races for the day
my eight finished somewhere at the back

Our fun was not to end
until the wee hours of the morn
we intended to sleep till noon
but woke at the crack of dawn

So we arrived on Birdsville cup day
With our beer tickets in hand
Moonee Lane won the big one
Glided home across the sand

No one seemed to care much
about the money they had lost
cause of the good times and great mates
and for that there is no cost

So go to Birdsville and see it all
I know my dad'll be there
i fell in love and i'll be back
my dad and I a pair

There is this place with nothing
no one during the year
But if you love this country
then you'll surely make it here

About this poem:
Millsy, Naz, Will and myself went on a trip to the Australian outback, specifically the Birdsville races in 2006 and i wrote my thoughts and experiences in poem form for anyone that would like to read it. Birdsville is in the far south east corner of Queensland. 22 hours west of Brisbane. The town consists of only a few hundred people except on the races week. They flock from everywhere. Was a truly amazing trip and if you really want to experience the kind, funny and layback nature of the Australian people then i recommend it strongly. My Father has been attending for over 25 years.

A Mans Battle With Balding-Donut Hair

MAN VS. DONUT HAIR - MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

musicianfriend

TO BE BALD..OR TO HAVE DONUT HAIR...THAT IS THE QUESTION!!

Twas the night before Christmas

When all through the house..

Not a creature was stirring..

Not even my spouse..

The Stockings were hung

by the chimney with care..

In hopes that St Nicholas

would bring him some hair..

His head it was balding

Hair fell in his lap..

We look at each other ..

And started to laugh..

But what to my wondering eyes

should appear

but one little follicle

inside of his ear

That little ole driver

grew steady and quick

The next thing you knew..

I gave it a lick

My husband was moved

he called me by name..

and after that nite

we were never the same..

From the top of his head

To his skinny ole chin..

hes shaved them away

then grew them again...

They looked like ants

before the clippers did fly...

those sweet little follicles...
.
fell over his thy...

He questioned himself

did he do the right thing..

so he grew them all back...

He looked like a King...

He looked like a mountainman

all fury like Fred

except for that donut

on top of his head...

(donut...the ring of hair around the head when the top at the back has fell out..)

He tired to cover it...

did all that he could...

he painted he colored..

but did him no good

He remembered a man..

all shaven and keen.....

That handsome young man...

They called Mr Clean..

He used ingenuity...

He used common sense..

He shaved it all off...

what a handsome gent...

My husband is happy....

No outings to dread

The donuts all gone..

from top of his head..

The moral to this story...

Is simple and true...

Shave off your hair..

and save on shampoo

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR....

LAUGHTER DOETH GOOD.....LIKE A MERRY MEDICINE!

Spring Festival

I used to long for Spring Festival so much when I was a little girl. New clothes, new shoes, delicious food....cracks.....

I used to long for Spring Festival so much when I was a young mother, bought all good things for my daughter, decorated my home, gathered with all relatives....

But This year,
after I finished
cleaning everywhere throughly,
go shopping, decorate my home....

I found only myself at home,
with a weak body
a jaded appetite,
a lonely heart,
.....
and with tears out of my eyes quietly
.....

How much I wish a person with me together during the big holiday
How much I wish a person could be with me when I feel not well, pass me a glass of water, touch my forehead, hug me and cheer me up....

How much I wish...at least I'm not so uncomfortable at the moment
....

This is the last day of the Chinese lunar year of ox
Tomorrow will be the first day of Tiger year
I wish I will be well when the first sunshine come in my room tomorrow.
I wish all bad things will be brought away by the ox
and the new tiger will leave me happiness....

Adventures in the Wilderness

Waterfalls sunshine mountains the rocks surround us
My pal is here Gods blessings are evident
Pitch the tent start the campfire
Relax enjoy take a breath of mother nature
Barbecues meat fruit and vegatables
Planned seasoned all enjoyed whole heartedly
It is beautiful being with the one you love
Surrounded by God's promise
Unwinding escaping the norm
Enjoying the wilderness
Algonquin park is a beautiful resort
Canoeing fishing and hiking peacefully
The adventures of nature climate adaptability and control
Patience meditation swimming enjoying all the activities
Sharing it all with the one you love
Thanks be to God a blessed day

A New Year Message

Let’s Thank Our Creator for all His Graces in Our Past,
Pray that We shall give Him Space in Our Hearts,
Let Him work His Miracles in years to Come,
Let Him Bestow His Graces to All and not non,
Blessed be your New Year,
Let it be . . .
A Meaningful One.

Here it comes

Oh year! Oh year! where did you go,
Will the next be any better we would all like to know.
I ask the new will you make us glad,
That this time this coming year will not be as bad.
It's no stopping the quickness,' as we have served ones like you before
A different number a different date that we know are in store...
So out with the old in with the new
And thank God for the red white and blue.

My New Years Eve

I know, this year will be different
it will be a better year then the last.
A new years eve, spend alone,
with only my dog for company.
(which I prefer some days).

It was a full moon out
this last new years eve,
I bet the police was busy,
Too many DD's on the road.
(and don't forget, it snowed)

So, anyways, where was I?
Ahhh yes, just me and the dog.
we're both reflecting on
the year just passed.
(while we're waiting for the ball to drop.)

we always watch it, every year,
although, I think its stupid.
we watch the people on TV
wait for the ball to drop.
(I am reaching for my Canadian)

It's at least 20 below freezing out
and they are all bundled up
with toques and giant NIVEA hats.
soo many people, together.
(I would've liked to be there)

The ball starts dropping,
Excitement is in the air.
the people start counting,
and finally, the ball is down.
(would be funny if it get stuck)

"Happy New Year everyone"
the people kiss and hug.
I drink my Canadian
and think of people who are dear to me.
(and people who were)

I am thinking nothing really changed,
only a number.
but everything changed just the same.
I wonder were I will be next new years eve,
(I just know it will be a good year)

I hug my dog and say:
"Happy New Year, Cookie"
and change the channel to A&E,
watching 48 hrs,
a reality cop show, on TV.

~At 40 Below~

Dam it's sure a cold place to be, socks slippers fully dressed an a throw, fireplace cracklin an jack frosted window panes. The snow's in squeak mode, with your foot or a tire an even foot of a mouse. It's even a place on the thermometer two converge. Farenheit an celsius chill for a while, at 40 below they share that same place. Warmer or colder to each other can't keep pace. Pull up the blankets another log on the fire. Nights colder than ice, tuck in the toes an let 40 below be as it may~
