Happy Samhain!

The chill's arrived, the crop is in.
It's time for feasting to begin.
The smell of baking fills the night,
And time has come for bonfire's light.

Let's raise a mug of hearty ale,
In lantern's shine from hill and dale.
To toast the harvest and the feast,
And gather round the roasted beast.

While gathering from near and far,
We'll make a wish upon each star.
Haul in the wood and light the fire,
This is a feast not fun'ral pyre.

The veil is thin between the sides,
Where living lives and death resides.
So don your mask and chase away,
The evil spirits on this day.

The Grey Charlatan

What Charlatan is this that steals the sun and blue sky
And leaves a dirty white streak to the now grey horizon
The sun is gone and only a hazy afterglow remains
His name must be Gloom and his middle perhaps Greyheart
His dark cap forces dim shadows onto a stark countryside
It seems bare of all life as birds have flown, wildlife has
Burrowed out of site and humans are now barricaded inside
The wheels whine and whirr as I top the crest of the hill
And view the bay that is itself now just a pale grey flat mass
The Charlatan's coat tails gush cold air outside
that makes me shiver
Much like the sparsely clad brown leaved trees
that tremble in his wake
All the expanse of landscape is either grey or brown as if an oil
Canvas has had its paint melt and meld into dull monotones
What once had perspective now seems flat and artificial
I see his footprints displalyed as matted leaves between the trees
If I didn't know it were the Charlatan I would swear it the apocolypse
And fear to take a breath for fear of inhaling acrid gases and fumes
His dark cape has cloaked all in a forboding darkness
that makes me sullen
It has sprinkled dismal dust on all that I can
see and has now vanished
Probably hiding in a dark cavern feigning death
until this time next year
It reminds me of a witches lair as depicted in a fantasy movie
That projects fear and despair and dampens all thought of hope
The cold creeps into my bones as I turn up the heater and clamp my collar
Its the feeling of death and decay and I long to see a human to know
That this is truly not the end but only part of earths natural cycle

About this poem:
There is usually a day in late fall when its really
drab and cold telling winter is in the wind. I experienced this
the other day as I crested a vantage point where
I could see for 30 miles.

Astarte

The Mother who has made this world,
Has not forsaken her children.
Tis she who brings the sun each day,
And puts it to bed every evening.

The patriarchs who run the show,
Have tried to bury her glory,
But birds that sing and seeds that sprout,
In praise do repeat her story.

Her fertile womb has spawned our race,
In ancient times we adored her.
But politics and religion,
Have convinced us to ignore her.

We need our Mother desperately,
Right now even more than ever.
So let us call on her as we,
In our daily lives endeavor.

When troubles feel too much to bear,
And your life seems not worth living,
Turn to her, let her lift you up,
Look at all the gifts she's giving.

My Little Leaf

You who were once so colorful and crisp
Now laying soft and limp brown with decay
Once in the gentle start of spring would wisp
A new growth bursting forth in green array

How much I watched you grow in each season
Collect from a bright sun much energy
Making me think of life with more reason
We were the center of such synergy

Now that darker skies fill with grey coldness
Whispers in the wind the winter coming
Left with yet another year of oldness
Face a hundred days of frostful numbing

Good bye my dearest friend my little leaf
You brought to me much joy in time so brief

a sparrow

Sing your song of wonder, sing it loud and clear. Make your nest for its that time of year. Your mighty courage for one so small, the sky lit battles, yet you do not fall. You live with out riches,or falshey garb, christian icon you are.

morning has broken.............

Splinters of light pierce through the cloud laden horizon
as the sea laps lazily on the shore
the shrill of gulls battling over remnants of food
left behind from visitors of the night before
the welcoming sand absorbs the tensions
natures healer of all that ails
while the salt air stirs the senses
allowing clarity to prevail
soldier crabs march in unison
away from the thunderous sound
of footsteps making their way
across the shell laden ground
driftwood from another land
half buried from the hightide
often intrigues me of its journey
what seas did it ride
a mirrored sea reflects
a whispering dawn trying to break free
of the clouds grasp
holding back its identity
an coconut palm lay half broken
undermined by a huge sea
fighting to survive
against natures fee
beauty and the beast
one and the same
so many moods
to appreciate is sane
an early morning walk
with the one who has your heart
sharing simple pleasures
for a beautiful day to start.......

Of Deserts, Oceans and Tundras

In the vast deserts life struggles
clinging on by their toe nails
short scrubby plants poke out
a hot haven for scorpions

See the marks in the red sand
of where a snake slithered by
side winding its way over
the baking hot sands of dunes

Here all life is sparse
only the fit surviving

Yet in the vast oceans
life teems with brilliance
various colourful corals
with sparkling little fish

Immense whales roam at will
see their water sprouts
gushing up in fountains
as silently they glide by

Shoals of fish darting by
seaweed lazily waving

Then there are the snowy tundras
life here too is for the fittest
majestic polar bear with cubs
fishing at an air hole in the ice

Penguins scurrying as fast as they can
they have no intention of being supper
sea lions lay on the rocky snowy shores
here to mate and give birth to pups

The wolf pack roaming far and wide
searching for their elusive next meal

As I travel these places in my mind
I am struck by how alike our lives are
we go through hard times as we traverse
the winding paths set before us

Then there are the times of plenty
when all is sunny and delightful
a time to enjoy and even to reflect
to give thanks that all is so good

On to the winter which comes to all
a time too of hardship and being slow
the sense of life starting to wind down
the reluctance acceptance as we near the end

Bird Songs (sonnet)

Listen when you awake at crack of dawn
hear the chorus of all the birds singing
watch them as they scurry and dig the lawn
until a nasty cat sends them fleeing

How dull and bland without any birds
silence would greet us with it's bleakness
less colour everywhere, half mast halyards
how lucky to have birds to add brightness

So many feathered friends around
delighting us with their wonderful songs
the sound of harmony our souls surround
for the sweet mellifluous songs prolongs

Tunes everywhere blending in harmony
sweetly combining sounding like honey

The Playful Winds

The playful winds blew softly from the south
summer breezes gentle as they pass by
full of the scents of seasons flowers
flooding my senses and filling my soul

Summer has swept in full of her glory
Roses, Tulips Stately Lupins stand tall
I stroll through winding lanes of memory
harking back to other glorious days

Other summers that we shared together
now just memories of days gone by
as the southerly winds tugs my sleeves
I come back to the splendour of today
