Birdsong

Keep on singing, bird.
I cannot see you
as I sit enclosed
by the four walls of my room.
But I do not need to see you
with my eyes.
Your song goes to the centre
of my being
making me ever aware of
the kinship of my spirit
with yours.
I do not hear you anymore.
Perhaps you have flown away.
But the vibrations
that your song has set up
within my soul
will go on
like the never-ending waves
of the ocean.
Thank you, bird!

lightning strike

in the grand theatre
opening in the Heaven,s
drifting across the sky,
cloaked in darkness

whistling unseen voices
darkened within rage,
nature's forces
at work
rising wind salute

in static
hair raising
falling down the spine
banging drums
growling almighty roars

grumbling unforeseen forces
churning in it's might,
an earth shattering clap
applauding trees bend
wind blowing gale

lighting up dark
bowing to light
in strike daylight
unmerciful power

battle in darkened clouds
alight candy floss
falling rain crystals
in sparkling diamonds
lightning strikes

as the thunder roars
frightening night
rumbling drum beats
upon nature's might
you strike

Hawks (Haibun)

Wandering along the winding trail I watch as hawks play
ducking and diving, swooping and tumbling and climbing
up again, making a magnificent display backed by their
shrill cries to each other

Riding the thermals
climbing up in unison
wild spirits air bound

They have three fledglings to rear, so back to hunting
they go, sharp eyes spotting the rustle in the undergrowth
wings folded they plunge down like raining bullets
striking hard they carry it back to the nest to feed the chicks

Three fluffy small chicks
baby plumage now changing
they look so scruffy

Now fully feathered they flap and stretch their wings
then first one takes to wing finding it hard to land
it misses its mark a few times, at last alighting
undignified on a branch

New generation
one day they too will have chicks
and so the cycle goes

In The Woods

I set off along the faint trail
it was one I had not noticed before
plunging me deep into unknown territory
stomach clenched in excitement as I strode on

Tall old Oaks, Aspens, Chestnuts and Beeches
cloaked the way ahead, I was aware of silence
rather a nervous paused silent as if holding it's breath
everything seemed to be waiting for something to happen

Deeper into the woods I went, admiring the new slightly odd
flora and fauna scattered about, beautiful flowers blooming
mushrooms two feet and more wide with red and yellow spots
sturdy enough to sit on while I took a rest

Slipping into sleep I travelled even deeper
until I came to the heart of these mysterious woods
a shout went up from elves, fairies and pixies
she is here at last, our soon to be crowned new queen

A magical glen with a throne in the middle
red carpet made from red flower petals strewn
jewels most wondrous glinting in the trees
birds so colourful that they dazzle as they fly

Clasping me by the hand, the pixies lead me to the throne
once I am seated, they serve me with golden nectar
tasty berries and cakes of flowers on leaves for plates
full of such excitement I gaze around the clearing

A place of tranquillity and majestical splendour
little houses in the trees and small fairy lights
standing sentinel was an ancient gnarled Oak
branches waving as it moved towards me

Shaking as it drew closer and stopped before me
an elf handed it a crown that glittered with gems
turning to me it said let the crowning commence
with great ceremony he uttered the words

"Has any here just cause as to why she shouldn't be crowned?"

A deathly silence prevailed not even a murmur
Then turning to me he placed it on my head
all around were now on bended knee, heads bowed
The oak said "Now you are our ordained queen"

As a great cheer went up I startled back awake
the clearing, throne and all the little people vanished
All that was left behind was a feather of wonderful hues
and the crashing of a startled stag fleeing into the trees

To be Free

Fallen Acorn from a tree above
to the river below
Drifting down stream
To the ocean it will go

Get's caught on a branch
from a fallen tree
in the river it will be
Dancing around for a day or two
it finally breaks free.

Drifting down stream it will go
wild waves taking it to sea.
A quarry of rocks it will stop
dancing around it can't break free,
for a week or two
Brushing the rocks it cannot stop
for a week or two

Wild waves pushes it free
on it's way to the sea.
It's finally free
To the ocean it will be.

The Short Death

Splendor short lived set the standard
Parting again established the pain.
Re-uniting soon sets the pace.
A pace to somehow keep us sane.

life is changing before our eyes.
Never again to be what we knew
And the trials we face we must embrace
They combine the me and the you.

So for a while we have space
A lonely and requisite space.
That keeps things aright as they must be
''Til we're both living in the same place.

It's coming, my love, so help me, God.
It's coming as sure as I breathe.
There's no one like you in the world for me
It's a core system of my belief.

Our time is coming and very soon
And nothing can thwart us tomorrow
So all we must do is stick to our guns
And weather short terms of sweet sorrow.

there are places

there are places in the world
with untwitterable angst and sorrow
dank cellars with young fear
closets with secrets lurid and fierce

numerous places where blackened hearts
strive to outdo one another with
ever greater conflagration and hate
perpetuating pathos for the nameless

there also are places of serene calm
the quality of gentle light radiant
as a desert sunrise, where winds
swirl sandstone washes of eons past

too, wrinkled old men, spiritually bent
meet youth of quiet courage to
deny the passage of menacing hearts
to places victimless and living

at the point, the fulcrum between
is where the possibility of places
sway chances of desecrate chaos and
sustainable tranquil gaia coexistence

this is where humanity stands today
where it has always been able to
weigh in, in either direction for
that which is desired most, by each of us

in deed, in direction, in heart
rebellion is a part from the here
acceptance is a way from the now
the human race finds it's place, some how

**Say Goodbye to Fall**

I watch the sun as it shines
on the last of the beautiful leaves
I watch as one floats to the ground
Gently on the soft, caressing breeze

I watch and listen....
To squirrels chatter as they scatter
Munching, storing, crunching nuts
With hopes of growing fatter

Canadian geese fly over my head
Honking their sad and lonely goodbyes
On their way to somewhere warmer
HUH?! I cant believe my eyes...

While I was lost deep in my thoughts
The winds of change had started to blow
The air had grown colder, the sky grew darker
And down came white flakes of snow

As I silently say farewell to fall
I pause to take one last look
Time to go in, sit before the fire
With a cup of hot tea and a good book

Tonight

The moon is slowly rising high
In the deep black velvet sky
Between the V of two stately trees
Its glorious Lunar light beckons me...

Crickets are chirping their nightly lullaby
Luring flickering fireflies to sleep
A beautiful evening such as this
Deserves to be a special memory to keep...
