Skybow

Bee charmer

Mid-Summer's midday blaze,
slow burns a deep desert canyon.
Randomly seeded by giant's
carelessly tumbled boulders,
sentinels of a slender creek.

My tribe and I,
tree hugging outcasts,
peaceful pilgrims living freedom songs
we follow the hidden ways of water.

Soothing our hot-pepper feet
in the shock of shaded-iced pools.
Lift cool in cupped hands,
sip grateful shivers in the heat
while our toes gossip with God,
nudging him in languid syllables
'till silent stone lips spill grace.

Canyon's mouth yawns
on the meadow buzzing with bees,
thrumming with destiny.

Just go, I thought,
escape the logic of gravity
unencumbered visit the Queens,
rising, falling, hovering
in their alchemy.

Good Night Moon

Good night moon
Watch over my sleep
Keep evil spirits
In your shadow
Safe is your light
Shining tonight
Giving delight
Free me from
All sorrow

Stages

A tree,a leaf, a petal, green grass
Wonders of nature we can never surpass
Things that grow and things that are born
Sometimes new, old, worn or forlorn
Nature is beautiful in all of its stages
Decaying only to start life anew
Give inspiration and constant change too
Perhaps I wish that I were a willow
As I lay my head gently on my pillow
From dust to dust is a popular phrase
That's where we are headed someday
So you see my wish may come true
I think some days when I'm feeling blue
That someday I'll nourish the seed of a tree
And one day transform and tall willow I'll be

A Hidden World

Hiding in tall grasses a world unseen
Pass creatures over and under the ground
Only visible to sight very keen
In the slightest indentation or mound

So life exists which we're barely aware
No appreciation or knowledge gains
A living world as if not even there
Under marching feet which only disdains

Clever creation works in small places
Against unconscious attempts to destroy
Look closely again at Queen Anne's laces
Many creatures living there to enjoy

Down the dark tunnels dug in the grasses
On hands and knees...magnifying glasses

About this poem:
Rediscovering an incredible abundence of life right out there in a field of tall grass, a hidden world which 99.9 % of us have maybe never seen...well perhaps since our own childhood.

The Jaguar

Embedded image from another site

I prowl through deep forests
following faint hidden trails
looking for prey hearing rustles
made by various creatures rooting
Embedded image from another site

I hide up near water which I love
hot summer's day I like to swim
I lay in wait soon a tapir approaches
I jump on its back biting through its skull
Embedded image from another site

drag it away deep into the forest
there to feast at my leisure
now I am over two I call for a male
when we meet up we fierily mate
Embedded image from another site

I am likely to scratch and bite
as I don't like other cats
in time I will give birth
to 2-4 cubs who live with me
Embedded image from another site

for up to 2 years hunting together
cubs leave the birth den around 6 months
now I begin to teach them to hunt
how to stalk and ambush the prey
Embedded image from another site

males I chase away as they will kill
my cubs if they can, so as to mate
perpetuating their own lines
I will fight to the death to save them
Embedded image from another site

my favourite food is an armadillo
my powerful bite breaking open
that shell with ease releasing
the tender meat concealed underneath
Embedded image from another site

I am solitary most of my life
with no predators apart from man
I roam wild and free marking territory
whoa betide any who dare trespass

About this poem:
Female estrus is 6–17 days out of a full 37-day cycle, and females will advertise fertility with urinary scent marks and increased vocalization. Both sexes will range more widely than usual during courtship.

Mating pairs separate after the act, and females provide all parenting. The gestation period lasts 93–105 days; females give birth to up to four cubs, and most commonly to two. The mother will not tolerate the presence of males after the birth of cubs, given a risk of infanticide; this behaviour is also found in the tiger.

soldiers of nature

a testimony of time
staring of into the distance
a storm blowing
howling it way across the sea
trees like gladiators
hanging branches bent with age
faced the wind
rooted firm
braced for the storm
twisted with the pain of centuries
protecting us from its force
like wings branches blown back
our first defence
our shield against the elements
rooted firm they stand tall
the cries and moans of natures souls
whistling and moaning through their branches
warning us of whats to come
hundreds of years we stood
in all seasons ,all weathers
looking around fallen soldiers
broken trunks tore from the ground
years they held their ground
now sitting at the fire
a log in my hand
only now you give me warmth
soldiers are trees
around a fire we tell our tale
as firmly we stood against the gale
another day
another battle

timer

naked to the bone
to the earth we fall
grains falling through time
like quick sand a vacum
each one of us a grain
becomming one with the earth
leaving our footprint
through sandstorms blindly
searching the deepest depths
an ocean of life
walking over the sands
leaving my impression
my footprint
left in the sands of time
creating my sandcastle
each grain a building block
blown away in time
in memory of life
a grain of thought

A Lake Somewhere

gentle the waves lap
circles in the water
as fish grab a fly
beauty surrounds me
mist swirls and twirls
silvery tree reach up
to skies of azure

peace of near silence
you can hear a leaf fall
deep blue and purle
the lake stretches out
enclosed by craigy hills
nestling happily in valley
clouds floating lazily by
far away from lifes woes

I sit and listen
to the pure notes ringing
as a blackbird sings its delight
let this lake remain in peace
far from the toils and coils
the rush and bustle of man
lets leave it to slumber

The Ancient Tree

The Ancient Tree

BY linda hillier on January 26, 2011 the ancient tree

the ancient tree stood in the clearing

majestic in its full leafed beauty

its old branches reaching up to the sky

roots stretching deep down into the earth

what different things it had seen

during the time it had stood

witnessing many a battle

even a murder or two

the secrets it could tell

Of the foolhardiness of mankind

600 years it had stood sentry

over all it surveyed

now still majestic but slowly dying

it would take all it knew to the grave

Felix Falls

Fearless Felix faces fall from
24 miles above earth’s crust
stepping out of space capsule door
one step to free-falling, without flinch
in God’s or in science’s trust.

Humbling moment, one with all
that ever was or will ever be
no thought of records or science gains
knowing all that matters is to
touch down running, safe and free.

High to see just how small we are
with vision clear though visor ice
spinning out of control, 20-second count
seven years toward record breaking
hanging in balance, not once but trice.

Fighting forces to resume control
supersonic speed handily attained
a Mach 1.24 conquest strength
highest height, fastest free-fall velocity
two out of three astounding victories.
Kittenger’s 17 seconds left on the brink.

Bravely going where no one’s gone before
leaving space exploration an open door.
