Collection of Birds (haiku)

Happy pelican
eating an enormous fish
see his pouch bulging

Merry kingfisher
waiting on his pole for fish
he darts and spears one

Full of joy and fun
the skylark warbles in glee
delight in each note

Fearsome eagle drops
plummeting down like a stone
striking hard he kills

Trees (haibun)

Watch and listen carefully.
There, do you hear the stirring?
Wander over and move the bracken
see the hedgehog scurry away,
now fat and sleepy

Tall pines are waving
as the gentle breeze blows
branches are dancing

Aromatic scent of their wood
floods the valley, everything
smelling so fresh from the tang.
Birds sing out in happiness
perching high up in the canopy.

The mighty oak who's
heavily laden acorns
crash down to the ground

Squirrels quickly gather them up
to store for winter hiding them
in hollow trunks and small cracks.
Then tuck themselves up
in their dreys to hibernate

Horse chestnut ripens
swelling up in fruition
kernels taste so sweet

Now the hot chestnut sellers
stand by their braziers
toasting the nuts
passing them out in
brown paper bags,
watch the child tossing one
from hand to hand
impatient for them to cool

Ash stately stands guard
over the silent churchyard
no trespassing here

Well tended graves
nestle under its canopy
crosses and angels standing watch too,
a quiet place to come and reflect.

Yew so poisonous
keeps the animals at bay
protecting the graves

Wisdom and Knowledge

a cup may contain water
but it is not the water

words may point to the truth
but they are not the truth

form may express the essence
but it is not the essence

knowledge may lead to wisdom
but it is not wisdom

having knowledge is being intellectual
having wisdom is being intelligent

knowledge deals with the parts
wisdom deals with the whole

the whole is more than the sum of the parts
wisdom is more than knowledge

Farm Life at Dawn

As dawn starts to streak across the sky
heralding in the new born day
feisty rooster already perched on the wall
giving forth with all his might, he crows

Sleepy hens, ducks and geese scat for worms
low moos emitting from the milking parlour
mingling with the sucking sounds of machines
as they gather the rich creamy milk in containers

Banging of impatient hooves from the shire horses
hungry for their grain, tossing heads and stamping
loud neighs and whinnies fill the early dawn, soon
they will be at work ploughing and farrowing fields

Farmhouse door opens smell of eggs and bacon wafting
farmer's wife emerges carrying pails heavy with slops
as she nears the pigsty the grunts and squeals grow
barging, pushing as they search for tasty scraps

A caterwaul of noise from the rookery deafening
as they wheel and spin around the yard thieving
slowly as the animals return to the sweet meadows
life settles back to normal, until tomorrows dawn

Deserts

Vast dust bowls surrounding the land
barren bearly suporting an life
Stark and so bleak, just sand
sand as far as you can see

Wicked winds churning up
the forever changing canvass
reforming the dune hills
maps little use to you here

Watch the Grecko lizard
as he dashes over the sand
his feet barely touching
then dives deep down

Harsh and Relentless
yet with a stark beauty
that some how pacifies
Life needs these adversities

It is on them that nature thrives
all we can do is onwards strive

Music Abounds (sonnet)

Listen now carefully, what do you hear?
sounds abound as you tune in to listen
universe of noise fills the stratosphere
birds singing, rustling leaves in transition

Blades of grass crackle sounding like gun fire
the trickle of the brook harmonious
I settle down by the roaring campfire
drinking in the sounds most melodious

As magically they blend together
creating music so soulful to hear
playing perfectly keeping in meter
in the background reed pipes clamour come here

Music around us abounds all the time
listen to it play enjoy the downtime

Tranquillity

It is snowing tonight!
How beautiful it is!
Everything is so lovely!
The first snow of the year!

I was all set for bed
when I decided
to put out the light and
to look out the window.

The fresh snow on the ground
and on the housetops
unspoiled by man or beast
appears so peaceful and serene

I see a pine tree
and the upper portion
of its branches and needles
are gently covered with snow.

I have seen that same tree
many times before
but never has it looked
as lovely as it looks tonight.

Mystical Experience

There are moments
when a marvellous experience
leaps into mind
as though coming
from another world
The magic that calls it forth
is often so fleeting
as to be forgotten
in the joy of the experience itself -
it may be a skylark bursting into song
the plash of a wave
a flute played by moonlight
or the fateful drumming
or shrieking of a mountain storm
a lovely smile perhaps
or a single gesture
form or hue
of compelling beauty
a familiar scene
transformed by an unusual quality of light
a cluster of rocks
suggestive of beings imbued with life
or the spell may be wrought by
a sudden exaltation
the jerking of the mind
into an unknown dimension
a curtain hitherto unnoticed
is suddenly twitched aside
and for a timeless moment
there stands partially revealed
- a mystery

About this poem:
These words were written in prose form by John Blofeld in his book, "Beyond the Gods". It deals with Taoism and Buddhism. I have attempted to re-format the words in poetic form to share with others.
Blofeld goes on to say: "Of one thing I am sure - a mystical experience, whether vague or intense, is nothing less than a direct intuition of Ultimate Reality".

Several poets, both eastern and western, reflect "mysticism" in their poetry. William Blake is an example. He says:

"To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour."

4 Hauki 's

A simple daisy
yet exquisitely formed
white and gold abound

My blackbird follows
me around in the garden
cheerful tune emits

snow white so lovely
you poke up your head through snow
snowdrop glistening

a robin redbreast
tugged at a juicy worm
he was so pleased

Weather

Clouds breeze , wind strong
lightning flashing down in forks
rain flooding the plain
