Nature Portraits 2 - Mountain, Sequoia, Sunset

The grandeur of a majestic mountain
with its snow-capped peak
enveloped in fleecy white clouds
against a clear azure blue sky

The glorious majesty of a stately sequoia
the largest living thing on earth
its massive trunk over thirty feet wide
with its gnarled rugged beauty

The wondrous artistry of the setting sun
edging the darkened clouds with silver linings
and painting the evening sky
in brilliant colours of the rainbow

Experience and Knowledge

words are like a map
and experience is the territory
a map can only give knowledge
"about" the territory
it can never give knowledge
"of" the territory
this can only be obtained
through direct experience

The Timber Wolf

The Alpha she wolf slipped away
she headed for the outcrop
where she had a den deep in the ground
she knew her time was near
her mate watched her go
knowing he would not be welcome
that she would birth alone
only once their eyes were open
would she let him near
for the meantime he would hunt
leave food by the entrance
while snug and warm within the den
the pups were born nine in all
at three weeks she led them out
letting them play and explore
now she welcomed her mate
proudly she showed off her pups
together they led them down the valley
to where the rest of the pack rested
each one in turn was introduced
now their care would be done by all
the young females would help to nurse
while the immature males would baby sit
for this is how a pack raises the pups
after the adults return from hunting
the pups will jump and bite at their throats
until they regurgitate the meat from the kill
eating until gorged then they sleep and grow
waiting for the day to come
when they will start the cycle over again

About this poem:
the pack is very complex and highly organized. Only the alpha male and female mate, they both can and do stare the others down to stop both fights and non alpha's from mating. There are usually around twelve in a pack. On average they hunt a range of 60 miles in diameter and can run up to 40 miles an hour and cover 50 miles a day.
Non breeding females produce milk and nurse the pups while young males compete to baby sit. They hunt birds and mammals such as deer and caribou and do a howling chorus before the hunt. A litter of pups consist of one to eleven, they are born blind and deaf.

The Red Stag

The Stag

by Linda Hillier 21/01/2011
Embedded image from another site

The moon was shining brightly in the glen
The air was so still it seemed to be holding its breath
Gentle murmuring could be heard from the brook
When into the starlight stepped a beautiful stag

Tall and proud he stood a true king of the night
Sniffing the air he softly called to his herd
One by one they filtered into the glen to browse the sweet grass
Their fawns jumping and playing in the moonlight

Mock fighting with one another striving to win
For one day maybe they too would be kings of the glen
A loud roar and a crash through the trees another rival appears
The stag roared back his anger challenging the intruder
Embedded image from another site

A mighty clash of antlers as they fought pushing each other
Equal in size and strength it was a battle royal
For over 3 hours they strived to defeat the other
At last the resident lord overcame his rival and roared his victory

Whilst the loser slunk away to lick his wounds
For such is life in the wilds to the victor go the spoils
it will be his fawns that grace the herd for another year
The stag calls to his does and leads them back into the forest

From A Seed

A seed is blown on the wind
hither and tither it goes
finally coming to rest
in a patch of fertile earth
Embedded image from another site

for a while it lies farrow
slowly a crack appears
a tip pokes out its head
then burrows downwards
Embedded image from another site

splitting shooting into multitudes
roots now everywhere they sprout
a tendril shoot starts its growing
reaching up high towards to the sky
Embedded image from another site

now the leaves start forming
twigs shoot out in all directions
each one turning into a branch
that stretches up and then out
Embedded image from another site

remember that small tiny tendril
now it's become a mighty big tree
climb up it to the top of its canopy
you can now see for miles and miles
Embedded image from another site

stand at its base your arms can't embrace
then lean back and gaze up towards its top
that tiny seed once would fit into a hand
now has become a magnificent full grown tree

About this poem:
oak trees in particular have over 500 different types of insects living in them and certain butterflies can only lay their eggs in an oak
did you know that what you see of a tree is only a third of what is underground?

Cottontail (Lady's challenge)

I can be your friend when needed
But shy and quiet am I
Long ears that help me listen
Private with my emotions,
But loyal to a fault
I may appear a bit withdrawn
But I freely give my heart
I tend to avoid confrontation
With friends I make amends
I scamper to hide when I’m scared
My cotton tail twitching all about

peace .soulgoddess challenge

No peace for me,
Let the world end,
Let the pain of others remain,
Let the men of wars dies,
Let the children of the world cries,
Where famine and broken families lies,
No peace ,for you ,and you and me!

We never listen,
We never learn,
We always question,
All words ,no deeds or actions!

What can one man,woman,
Or child make a difference...!
Lots of courage
And alot more
Stubbornness,
Is what you really need.
Not from one or ten to twenty,
But a score of hundred voices to plea...
Come join forces If you want global peace!

Not for me, peace,
I would rather sleep...

Global Nonsense

Ten thousand years ago trapped in the ice
Tiny bubbles of air frozen don't move
Slow moving mountains of ice cut and slice
Scoring bedrock with many a deep groove

Great whales ruled the oceans of ages past
Woolly Mammoths thundered over the plains
Where primitive man during this time massed
Huddled in caves learns how fire maintains

The ice is almost gone as glaciers melt
And the last of the great bears appear doomed
How the little creature called man is knelt
Hovels while the dying embers consume

Our progression is not measured in time
For what we do to our earth is a crime

What Matters

What really matters in this world you ask
Look at the pond where the sunsets shimmer
Sitting on the shore where to lay and bask
Watching all the gorgious color glimmer

Hike up past the forest filled with softwood
Where puffy white clouds drift just overhead
To almost reach up and touch where I stood
Way above where my quiet valley spread

The wind and sun and stars know who you are
As time will stand aside and let you pass
Await the end of night for morning star
Marvel at the beauty of old sea glass

Subtle greatness of life lies everywhere
By walking away from vanity fair

~~~Hidden Angel Wings~~~
The whole world grumbled. The sky was grey.
I had nothing to do and nothing to say.
We were on the margin of the end of a murky time,
And then there seem like to be nobody beyond,
Then my acquaintance was gone~~~
And every person face grew merry and bright,
And I danced for utter enchantment.
"Give me the camera, fast, oh fast!
It is heart-rending so fast, as the sky is getting greyer.
Then the acquaintance abruptly appear again,
And gathered up, shaking silently,
And the clouds were all clustered with shape,
And it sounded as if the cloud had talked.
Oh, there was not just a cloud it was the wings,
Of an Angel~~~
