Ever wondered why fire engines are red? It is a question I had often asked when I was a child. The best I could ever get was that flames are red, but they’re not. But now, after all these years I have finally worked it out.

Traditionally a fire engine was manned by six fire fighters and six is a half dozen. Eggs are sold by the half dozen and are laid by hens after being fertilized by a rooster.

Roosters are also found on top of church steeples and church steeples are tall structures, almost like a ship’s mast. Ships sail on the sea and there are plenty of fish in the sea, or so I have been told many a time. Most fish (if not all) have fins.

The Fins made war against the Russians and the Russians were known as Reds. So that is why fire engines are red.

Simple as that. I cannot understand why it took me so long.

Whereas the number 666 is very explicitly referenced in the bible, 777 is never mentioned. When trying to find an explanation, these were the most popular:

1. 777 represent the Trinity.
2. 7 Churches, 7 Stars/Angels and 7 Lamp stands.
3. 7 Horns, 7 Eyes and 7 Spirits of God.

There are many other instances of 7 being used. 7 is a very popular number in the bible; probably derived from the creation. So is 12; probably initiated by Jacob’s 12 sons. And 40; like the 40 days and 40 nights of rain during the deluge. 430 is another such number. And 5.

Mathematically there is nothing special about the number 7. It is the fourth prime number. Preceded by 2, 3 & 5 and followed by 11, 13, 17 etc. The factors for 777 (3 X 7 X 37) are equally unimpressive. From a pure mathematical viewpoint 666 is a much more interesting number.

I might be wrong, but as a lifelong biblical scholar, my conclusion is that 777 is a man made number without any foundation in the bible; therefore not holy at all.

So my question is: Who had the audacity to assign a number to God?

To assign a number to a god was a Babylonian practice. Could it be that 777 was ‘invented’ to get the attention to away from the pointing finger of 666 and its Babylonian origin? Remember, the Babylonian religion was amalgamated with the Christian Church in 425 ADE by command of the Roman emperor Constantine.

Of course I can find a date for your 40 year old girlfriend with five ex-husbands who looks like a walking blimp and has a drinking problem, three teenagers living at home and the personality of a barracuda. Love to!

Now ladies, any man that says any of the above is a fake ok.

Many people do not know what to do with their freedom. As such they are prisoners of their own freedom. Freedom, when you are not prepared for it, is a burden and a curse. What good is it for a caged parrot to gain his freedom only to die of starvation and exposure?

Freedom is not doing what you want to do. That is called anarchy; and when we all do what we want to do, it causes chaos. Then freedom is just another word for having nothing left to lose.

We are all prisoners of our possessions. When you possess something, you have to take certain measures to protect that possession; be that material, love, status or anything else. The more precious the possession is to you, the more you are bound to it. You can only be truly free when you have nothing to tie you down to a certain place or routine.

Some would say that freedom is doing the right thing but what is the right thing? What is right for you can never be right for everybody else. Are you really free when you are bound to certain options? Is that really free choice?

If freedom looked like that, I’d rather be comfortably enslaved for only death can bring true freedom. And that is only if there is no afterlife because even then you will not have the choice of where you want to go. You will be bound by your limited choices here on earth.


Have a monster Friday.

I have often wondered about my purpose here on earth; for I do believe that we are all placed here with a purpose.

I have done ok for myself and there is nothing that I need to be ashamed of in my past; yet I have achieved nothing. I have not written a song, have not published a book and have not planted a proper tree. I have not fathered a son. I have done nothing.

The day I lay my head down my name dies with me; and so does the name of my father. Of the three sons my father sired, I’m the only one still alive and none of us produced a son to carry his name forward. His branch of the bloodline ends with me.

I fathered two daughters, my next brother one and my youngest brother had no children. We were very poor in children. I wonder if it bothers him. After my last brother died in 2000, he asked me if I planned to have more children.

I think he was still hoping for a grandson then.


Sometimes you disappoint people without intending to do so.

Somebody I know – let’s call him John – had his entire life derailed by a single event 35 years ago. He had everything going for him; a wife, 2 preschool daughters and was in a lucrative business with an equally capable partner. Now he has nothing.

One day the business required of him to be away for a week. However, he concluded the business in 4 days and arrived home on a night flight. When he walked into his bedroom he found his partner in marriage in bed with his partner in business.

Keeping the business in the family turned out to be too much for him. He fetched his firearm in the study and went to the kitchen to bolster his nerves with a few neat brandies. Then the two lovebirds appeared. And he fired two shots at them. Missed them both and they ran to the police station only half a block away.

John was arrested, charged with attempted murder and sent for psychiatric evaluation. When the case went to trial it was discovered that the lovebirds had disappeared. No witnesses meant no case and in the end John was found guilty of discharging a firearm within the municipal boundaries; he paid a small fine and forfeited his firearm.

But his life was over. The business went to pieces during the three months while he was in arrest and his wife cleaned out the house and the bank account before disappearing. John had lost all interest in life.

He drifted from job to job; more unemployed than employed. More on the street than in a house. Not the will to continue. He was an only child and he lost both his parents on the same day two years prior to the shooting incident. No family to get him on track again.

When the lovebirds finally resurfaced ten years later they were married and John did not even know he was divorced. His children were legally adopted by their new father and when he tried to contact them he ran into a court order preventing contact.

I don’t have much sympathy with his inability to stand up again but I do feel sorry for him. I think his life was stolen from him.
